BIBLE FOUNDATIONS LESSON NO. 12

ISRAEL – GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE God called Israel to be His heritage when He said to Abraham (Abram) in Genesis 12:3, “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” It seems that the Jewish people have always been persecuted and oppressed. Although they were long ago driven from their God-given homeland and dispersed throughout the world, God promised in Ezekiel 11:17, “...I will...assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.” We know that God is true and faithful, for in Hebrews 10:23 we read, “...for he is faithful that promised.” God has kept His Word, having miraculously reestablished the state of Israel in May, 1948, and He is continuing to restore more and more Jewish people to their ancient homeland each day. Since Israel's reestablishment, nearly every nation in the world has in some way opposed her, and surrounding Arab countries have waged many wars against the newly formed state. Though vastly outnumbered by belligerent forces, tiny Israel (about the size of New Jersey, or 1/7 the size of Colorado) continues to survive. This wouldn't be possible if she were not being supernaturally aided by God, who has given the Jewish people a will to live in their own ancient homeland. In our newspapers, on radio and on TV we are given slanted opinions concerning what should be done with Israel, but we, as Christians, must go to God's Word, where we are told in Psalm 102:13, “Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.” In Zechariah 2:8 we read, “...for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his (God's) eye,” and in Romans 11:26 we find Paul saying, “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob (Israel).” There are great things in store for Israel that extend far beyond this present age, and as we look to her future, we must remember to love and comfort her as God does (Isa. 66:10, 13). MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 122:6 CHOSEN PEOPLE – PROMISED LAND – Why the Jews? Why Israel? 1.* Who should determine who is given the disputed land of the Mid-East? (Jer. 27:5) 2. Isa. 43:1, 7, 21 – “O Jacob”…”I have created him for _________________________...This people have I formed for myself; they shall show forth ______________________________.” 3. Deut. 7:7-8a – In order to show his miraculous power to the world, and since He would not share his glory with man, He chose the ____________________________ of people to work through. 4.* Deut. 32:8-10 – “Jacob [Israel] is the lot [country, land] of God’s _________________________________... He kept him as the apple [middle, pupil, focus] ______________________________________.” God set the bounds (borders and boundaries) of all the nations of the world according to ___________________________________(v.8). 5.* Gen. 12:3 – All the __________________________ of the earth shall be ________________________through Israel. 6.* What will God do to those that curse and bless Abraham? (Gen. 12:2-3) 7. (a) God chose the Jewish people to be __________________ and ____________________ for Him. (Isa. 43:10) (b) Furthermore, in Ex. 19:5-6, God said they were a special treasure above all people and a kingdom of ___________________ and a _________________________ nation. 8.* What three men has God frequently identified Himself with in the Bible? (Ex. 3:6, 16) (a) (b) (c) 9.* Unto whose seed (ancestors) did God promise the land of Canaan? (Gen. 12:5-7) 10.* What did God make with his servant David? (Ps. 89:3-4, 28-36)

Lesson #12, p. 3/4 THE DEVIL AND HIS WORLD HATES ISRAEL AND WANTS TO POSSESS AND DESTROY IT 19.* The first thing Satan does after being unchained from the bottomless pit after the Millennium is to once again deceive the nations and attack the saints around _________________________________ (Rev. 20:7-9, Zech. 3:2) 20. Ezek. 36:2-6 – “The enemy hath said against you Aha, ‘even the __________________________________________ possession.’ [temple mount, etc.] ...made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side and ye [Israel] might be a possession _________________________________________________________.” [Palestinians] 21.* Ps. 83:1-2 – “Oh God,…____________________________ make a tumult and they that hate thee…..” From verse 4 and 12, give the three things the enemy wants to do to Israel: (a) (b) (c) 22.* According to Joel 3:2, for what major sins against Israel will God judge the nations? 23.* Should the nations of the world decide Israel’s boundaries? If not, who should? (Deut. 32:8-9, Jer. 27:5) 24. From Isa. 41:8-20, write down the phrases of what God says He will do for Israel [hint: after every “I have” or “I will” – example verse 8 – “I have chosen,” verse 9 – “I have taken and called thee.”] GOD LOVES ISRAEL AND JERUSALEM AND WILL DEFEND THEM 25. What are the two “I wills” of God contained in Isa. 49:25? (a) (b) 26.* Again, what are God’s two “I wills” concerning Jerusalem in Zech. 12:2-3? (a) (b) 27.* Who fights with God over Jerusalem? (Zech. 3:2) 28.* What will happen to the nations that come against Jerusalem? (Zech. 12:3 & 9) 29. Zech. 12:10 – God will then pour out the spirit of _____________________ upon the Jews and “they shall look upon me whom they have ___________________________” and there shall be great mourning as they are enlightened as to their rejected Messiah. In Zech. 13:6-9, one will ask “What are these __________________________ in thine hands (and feet and side) and Jesus will answer, ‘I was wounded in the house of ____________________________’” …”smite the _________________________ [33 AD] and the sheep shall be scattered” [70 AD dispersion by Rome]. __________ (fraction) of the Jewish people will die during the tribulation but 1/3 will be refined as gold and be saved.

Lesson #12, p. 4/4 CHURCH UNDERSTANDING & ACTION PLAN CONCERNING ISRAEL 30.* (a) Has God cast away the Jewish people? (Rom. 11:1, Isa. 41:9) (b) Shall Israel be saved? (Rom. 11:26-27, Isa. 62:11) (c) he Church, by faith, was grafted into root and tree of God and the Jews can be ___________________ _________________________ (Rom. 11:24). Explain the mystery of Rom. 11:25 that God doesn’t want us ignorant of ______________________________________________________________________. 31. Eph. 2:11-22 & 3:1-9 speaks of another mystery (fellowship of the mystery in 3:3-4, 9). This mystery is that the Gentiles (Church) are of the (2:12) “__________________________ of Israel;” and “_________________________ of the household of God” (2:19); and “____________________________________ of the same body” (3:6); and that he hath made both the Church and Israel – the twain or both into _______________________ (2:14-15) like a marriage. 32. The Church is the Bride of Christ while Israel is the bride or betrothed unto __________________________ (Isa. 54:5, Jer. 3:14, Hosea 2:19-20; Zech. 1:14-15). This makes us of the same spiritual family or household of God. 33.* What city shall be made a praise in the earth? (Isa. 62:7) 34.* We shall rejoice with and give love and comfort to whom? (Isa. 66:10, 13) 35.* The Church has a responsibility toward Israel. Read each scripture and give two key action phrases for each concerning what we should be doing: Ps. 102:13-16 – ___________________________________ _______________________________________ Isa. 40:1-2 – ___________________________________ _______________________________________ Isa. 62:1 – ___________________________________ _______________________________________ Isa. 62:6-7 – ___________________________________ _______________________________________ 36.*(a) What does God promise to those who pray for the peace of Jerusalem and love her? (Ps. 122:6)

(b) God will ____________________ those that bless them. (Gen. 12:3)

37. In 1 John 3:18 God tells us not to just love in word and tongue but in _________________ and _________________ .

WE DARE NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD

GOD DEFENDS ISRAEL TODAY

Joel 3:1-2 – “…I shall restore the prosperity of Judah and Jerusalem. I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehosaphat (judgment), and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted (divided) my land.”

Zech. 12:2-3, 8-9 – “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it…In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

Isaiah 41:8-20 – (8) “But you, Israel, are my servant, Jacob who I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham my friend. (9) You who I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called you from its furthest regions, and said unto you, You are my servant; I have chosen you, and have not cast you away. (10) Fear not; for I am with you: be not dismayed; for I am your God; I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. (11) Behold, all those who were incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and those that strive with you shall perish. (12) …Those that war against you shall be as nothing, and as nonexistent. (13) For I the Lord your God will hold your right hand, saying unto you, fear not; I will help you. (14) Fear not, you worm Jacob, and you men of Israel; I will help you, says the Lord, and your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. (15) Behold, I will make you a new sharp threshing instrument…(17)…I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. (20) That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.”

Isaiah 49:25 – “…for I will contend with him who contends with thee, and I will save your children.”

Israel’s Everlasting Covenant

Jer. 32:37, 40 & 42 – “Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, where I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely…And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, so that they will not depart from me…For thus saith the Lord; Just as I have brought all this great calamity upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.”

Ez. 37:26 – “Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.”

Gen. 17:7-8 – “And I will establish my covenant between me and you (Abraham) and your descendants after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto you, and to your descendants after you. Also I give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

Jer. 31:35-37 – “This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar – The Lord Almighty is his name: Only if these decrees vanish from my sight, declares the Lord, will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me. This is what the Lord says: Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done, declares the Lord.”

Jer. 33:24-26 – “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms he chose’? So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation. This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed laws of heaven and earth, Then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’”

Isa. 66:22 – “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.”

Isa. 54:5-10 – (5) “For your Maker is your husband…the Holy One of Israel…(7) For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you. (8) In a little wrath I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you, says the Lord thy Redeemer…(10) For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall the covenant of my peace be removed, says the Lord who has mercy on you.”

Jer. 46:28 – “Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, says the Lord: for I am with you; for I will make a complete end of all the nations to which I have driven you: but I will not make a full end of you, but will rightly correct you; for I will not leave you wholly unpunished.”

Ps. 89:3-4, 30-37 – “I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Your seed will I establish for ever, and build up your throne to all generations….If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the word that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven.”

Isa. 49:13b-16 – “…for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. But Zion said, The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me. Can a woman forget her suckling child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”

Malachi 3:6 – “For I am the Lord, I change not: therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”

Page 10: LESSON TWELVE Bible Foundations Class pre-study · BIBLE FOUNDATIONS LESSON NO. 12 . ISRAEL – GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE . God called Israel to be His heritage when He said to Abraham

HATH GOD CAST AWAY ISRAEL – HIS PEOPLE?

Romans 11 – (1) “I say then, Has God cast away his people? God forbid – certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham…(11) Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. (17) And if some of the branches be broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree: (18) Boast not against the branches. But if you boast, remember that you do not support the root…(19) You will say then, the branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. (20) Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: (21) For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not you. (22) Behold and consider therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness: otherwise you also will be cut off. (23) And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again…(25) For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happening to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in. (26) And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, there shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: (27) For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. (28) Concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the Fathers’ sakes. (29) For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable. (30) For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience. (31) Even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy.”

Eph. 2:12 & 19 – God even calls us believing Gentiles fellow citizens of the commonwealth of Israel.

UNITE WITH GOD IN ACTION FOR ISRAEL

Ps. 102:13 & 16 – “Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come…When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.”

Isa. 40:1-2 – “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.”

Isa. 62:1 – “For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns.”

Isa. 62:6-7 – “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem, who shall never hold their peace day or night: you who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, And give Him no rest, till He establishes, and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”

Ps. 122:6 – “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”

Esther 4:13-14 – “Then Mordecai told them to answer Esther, Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace, any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, then relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place; but you and your father’s house shall be destroyed: yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Gen. 12:1-3 – “Now the Lord had said to Abraham…I will make you a great nation…And I will bless them that bless you, and curse him that curseth you; and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

HOW GOD FEELS TOWARD ISRAEL AND THE JEWISH

PEOPLE

WHAT IS YOUR BELIEF AND STAND?

God’s Love Toward Israel

Zech. 1:14-15 – “…Thus saith the Lord of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great Jealousy. And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped toward the affliction.”

Num. 24:1 – “…Balaam (bribed to curse Israel) saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel.”

Zech. 2:8 – “(O Zion), For thus saith the Lord of hosts; after the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.”

Jer. 3:14 – “Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you…”

Hosea 2:19-20 – “And I will betroth you unto me for ever; yes, I will betroth you unto me in righteousness, in judgment, in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth you unto me in faithfulness: and you shall know the Lord.”

Luke 13:34 – “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!”

Are the Jews rejected? i•' (;; listening to this Good News-the Good f ,News about Christ. ,1 , · - 11 But what about the Jews? Have they k heard God's Word? Yes·, for it has gone f. .wherever they are; the Good News has beenf.-.. told to the ends of the earth. 19 And did theyf understand [that God would give his salvat tion to others if they refused to take itd]? L Yes, for even back in the time of Moses, LGod had said that he would make his people - jealous and try to wake them-up by giving f. his salvation to the foolish heathen nations.,; N And later on Isaiah said boldly that God ;_-would be found by people who weren't even \ looking for him.e 21 In the meantime, he \. keeps on reaching out his hands to the Jews, ;, but they keep .arguingf and refusing to ;:.come. -"· 11 !.ASK THEN, has God rejected and def serted his people the Jews? Oh no, not ] at all. Remember that Lmyself am a Jew, - a descendant of Abraham and a member of t Benjamin's family. (. J.3 No, God has not discarded his own ;;- people whom he chose from the very beginlning. Do you remember what the Scriptures j. say about this? Elijah the prophet was comf plaining to God about the Jews, telling God';: how they had killed the prophets and torn. down God's altars; Elijah claimed that he\: was the only.one left in all the land who still:; loved God, and now. t4ey were trying to kill:· him too.• And do you remember how God replied? God said, "No, you are not the only one left. I have seven thousand others besides you who still love me and have not bowed down to idolsl"8

' It is the same today. Not all the Jews i have turned away from God; there are a few being saved as a result of God's kindness in choosing them. ' And if it is by God's kind- · ness, then it is not by their being good enough. For in that case the free gift would I no longer be free-it isn'.t free when it isf earned. 1· r 1 So this is the situation: Most of the, Jews have not found the favor of God they are looking for. A few have-the ones God (. has picked out-but the eyes of the others !

are still beloved of God because of his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. "For God's gifts and his call can never be withdrawn; he will never go back on his promises. 30 Once you were rebels against God, but when the Jews refused his gifts God was merciful _to you instead. 31 And now the Jews are the rebels, but some day they, too, will share in God's mercy upon you. " For God has given them all up to sinb so that he could have mercy upon all alike. 33 Oh, what a wonderful God we have! How great are his wisdom and knowledge and riches! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his methods!

34 For who among us can know the mind of the Lord? Who knows enough to be his counselor and guide? » And who could ever offer to the Lord enough to induce him to act? 36 For everything comes from God , alone. Everything lives by his power, and 1

everything is for his glory. To him be glory evermore. 12

AND so, DEAR brothers, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living sacrifice, holy-the kind he., can accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? 2 Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different per• son with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you.

3 As God's messenger I give each of you God's warning: Be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring your value by how much faith God has given you. '·' Just as there are many parts to our bodies, so it is with Christ's body. We are all parts of it, and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have different work to do. So we belong to each other, and each needs all the others. 'God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, then prophesy whenever you can-as often as your faith is strong enough to receive a message from God. ' If your gift is that of serving others,
