Crime and Justice• Lawyers cost a lot of money in the

USA- it is estimated that a third of death row inmates in Philadelphia would have received sentences of life imprisonment if they had not been black.

• Lawyers more likely to seek a death sentence when victim is white and are less likely to seek a death sentence when the victim is black.

Crime and Punishment• Crime concentrated in urban areas- called

Ghettos. • Black people more likely to be arrested for

murder. • Victims of crime are also concentrated in

the urban areas. • Ethnic minorities who live in these ghettos

or barrios are more likely to be victims of crime.

• Crimes occur within race and economic groups- poor black people more likely to be victims of crime.

Plumbing and sanitation do not work properly.

Good schools with modern equipment.

Play parks are vandalised and children play in the

streets.

Drunks and drug addicts lie in hallways and on landings.

Large houses with nice gardens.

High crime rate

Streets patrolled regularly by police.

Homelessness• In the USA, over half without a home

were from an ethnic minority. • Main reason-substance abuse. • However this is being quickly

overtaken by the fact many cannot afford to stay in their homes.

• Sub prime mortgages- many cannot afford the high mortgage payments.
