Math Watermelon Seed
Counting - Choose a wa-
termelon number card
and place on the count-
ing mat. Add the appropri-
ate number of seeds to
the watermelon on the
mat. Use real (dried) wa-
termelon seeds, black
beans, black pony beads,
or small pieces of black
play dough.
Watermelon Seed
Shapes - Use watermelon
seeds (or the alternatives
mentioned above) to
make shapes. (TF)
Watermelon Fractions -
Discussion making a whole
watermelon with equal
parts. Use the watermelon
fractions printable to ex-
plore this concept. Can
also be done with real wa-
termelon slices.
Watermelon Ten Frames
- Add watermelon seeds
(or the alternatives men-
tioned above) to fill in the
ten frames.
How Many Seeds? - Cut
a piece of watermelon.
Have kids predict how
many seeds will be in it.
Count to find out.

Science Investigate a Real Wa-
termelon - Give kids melon
ballers and other scoops
and a watermelon cut in
half. Let them explore freely
and use their five senses to
make observations about
the melon. (TF)
Watermelon Life Cycle -
Discuss the life cycle of a
watermelon. Use the printa-
ble chart as reference,
along with nonfiction books
or pictures. Can also make
a written chart together.
Watermelon STEM Chal-
lenge - Cut apart pieces
of watermelon into different
shapes. Give kids the piec-
es, skewers and toothpicks
to build with. Then snack
away! (TF)
Watermelon Sink or
Float - Use different sizes of
watermelons for this activity.
Make predictions about
which will sink or float. Test in
a tub of water. After a wa-
termelon snack, see if the
rinds or empty watermelon
How Far are the Seeds?
- Have a watermelon seed
spitting contest. Let kids
practice spitting seeds and
discuss what they have to
do to make it go farther
(add more force). Measure
the distance they spit their
seed(s) with footsteps.

Sounds - Sort the printable
cards appropriately,
based on the initial sound
of each picture. Extend by
writing the beginning letter
and/or the words.
Other Make Watermelon Play
Dough - Add watermelon
Kool-Aid to your favorite
homemade play dough
recipe (or just add it to
store bought pink and

Torn Paper Watermel-
ons - Tear green and red
(or pink) construction pa-
per into small pieces. Glue
them onto another piece
of paper to make a pic-
ture of a watermelon. Use
fingerprints to make the
watermelon “seeds”. (TF)
Watermelon Sensory
Bags –Add hair gel, food
coloring, and watermelon
seeds to a Ziploc bag. Seal
it with tape (green if you
have it). Then explore.
Hang it in a window for
Watermelon Sponge
Painting - Cut triangles
out of sponges. Dip them
into pink paint and stamp
over paper. Turn them into
watermelon slices by
drawing green rinds and
black/brown seeds.
Watermelon Geoboard -
Pound golf tees into a
small watermelon. Add
rubber bands and make
shapes and designs. See
this pumpkin geoboard for
reference.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on
their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken

Math
Watermelon Patterns - Use
red/pink, green, and black
manipulatives (like Unifix cubes
or foam blocks) to make pat-
terns.
Roll and Color - Roll a number
cube (or die). Color that many
seeds on the printable water-
melon page
Literacy
Watermelon Letter Puzzles -
Match uppercase and lower-
case letters.
Watermelon Sensory Writing
Tray - Add rice (or other favor-
ite sensory filler) that’s been
dyed pink to a shallow tray.
Use black beans or black pony
beans to form words, letters,
and patterns. Can also write
the letters and words with fin-
gers.
Science
Life Cycle Printable - Put the
watermelon life cycle in the
correct order.
Sprout Watermelon Seeds -
This can be started a week or
so before the watermelon unit
if desired. Track the growth of
the sprouts and keep track of
what happens each day. (TF)
Sensory
Watermelon Play Dough - Use
the play dough you made.
Add black pony beads and
other pink, red, and green
loose parts to the play dough
invitation. (TF)
Watermelon Sensory Bottles -
Start with empty, clean plastic
bottles. Add rice that’s been
dyed pink, as well as black
beans or black pony beads for
the “seeds”. (TF)
Block Play
Watermelon Patch - Use large
blocks to design a farm for
growing watermelons. (TF)
Build a Watermelon - Use pink/
red and black blocks or Lego
to create watermelons of your
own design.
Arts and Crafts
Free Painting - Set out green,
red, white, and black tempera
paints. Children can create
their own watermelon-inspired
paintings. They can also ex-
plore using white and black to
create different shades of
green and red. (TF)
Watercolor Watermelons -
Draw the rind and seeds of a
watermelon. Go back and
paint the inside of the water-
melon with watercolors.
