To begin, remind your child of thechanges that a butterfly goes
through during metamorphosis.Together use your bodies to act out
each of the stages: First, the caterpillar starts
out as a teeny tiny egg.(Curl up into a little ball.)
Then, it comes out as awriggly caterpillar. It eats
and eats and eats!(Stretch out slowly andmove around on your
belly. Pretend to munch on
leaves.) Next, its skin hardens into
a chrysalis (pronouncedkris-uh-lis). (Stand very
stiff and straight. Wrapyour arms around your
body.) Finally, the butterfly
comes out of thechrysalis. It has
beautiful wings! It canfly away. (Spread yourarms as “wings” and
“fly” around the room.)Review the four stages.

How Many Raindrops?
Start by making clouds.You can have your childglue three or four cottonballs together on a pieceof paper to make a cloud.
Repeat to make four ormore separate clouds. Ifyou don’t have cotton
balls, help him or her drawclouds.
Next, write a numberabove the cloud. If yourchild is in pre-K, stick tonumbers between 1 and
10. If your child is inkindergarten, you can try
numbers up to 20. Askyour child what the
number is. Then, ask your child to
make that many raindropsbelow each cloud. He orshe can make raindrops
with a marker orfingerprints.
If you’d like, you canreverse the activity! Haveyour child make raindropsunder the cloud, counting
aloud as each is made.Then have your child writethe number of raindropshe or she made above
each cloud.
