Math Chrysanthemum counting

- Observe a Chrysanthe-

mum plant. Count how

many flowers you see. If

there are no flowers, count

how many stems or flower

buds you can find.

Flower patterns - Pull some

of the flower petals and

leaves from the Chrysan-

themum plant. Use them

to make patterns.

Name graphing - Write

each letter of child’s name

on a flower cut from con-

struction paper. Do the

same with other members

of the family. Line the

flower names up. Who has

the longest name? Who

has the shortest? What

other observations can be

made?

Chalk counting garden -

This can be done outside

on the sidewalk, or inside

on construction paper.

Create a math invitation

using a flower garden

drawn in chalk. (TF)

Counting flowers book -

Print and assemble this

counting book. Children

color in the flowers, read

the words, and count the

flowers. Keep for

rereading.

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Chrysanthemum observa-

tion - Observe a Chrysan-

themum plant. Use a jour-

nal to draw and label the

parts of the plant.

Planting seeds - Plant chry-

santhemum seeds. Ob-

serve them as they sprout

and grow. Keep observa-

tions in a science journal. (TF)

Flower dissection - Remove

a couple of flowers from

the Chrysanthemum plant.

Use a hand lens and twee-

zers to observe and dissect

the flower. Discuss your

observation.

Color changing flowers -

Use white mums to try this

classic science experi-

ment. Add food coloring

to multiple vases (a differ-

ent color in each vase).

Add white mums to the

vases. Observe as the dye

travels from the water into

the flower. (TF)

Coffee filter flowers - A

combination of science

and art with coffee filters

cut into simple flower

shapes. (TF)

Literacy Problem solving brainstorm

- Discuss how the other char-

acters’ actions made Chry-

santhemum feel. Brainstorm

ideas for better choices the

characters could make. Ex-

ample - When Victoria com-

ments on how many letters

are in Chrysanthemum’s

name; when Rita says, “Let’s

pick her!”; etc.

Mum names - Use chalk to

draw a large Chrysanthemum

with a long stem. Along the

stem add the number of

leaves that matches the let-

ters in the child's name. Let

the child write in a letter on

each petal (or do this for

younger children). Then prac-

tice hopping from leaf to leaf

as the child says the name of

each letter.

Story sequencing - Shared

writing about what hap-

pens at the beginning,

middle, and end of the

story. Be sure to add illus-

trations.

Rhyming words - Draw a

simple flower shape on

chart paper. Write a word

in the middle. Have child

think of rhyming words to

write/draw in the flower

petals.

Flower garden name -

Create a hands-on flower

name game. Alternative-

ly, use the printable flower

letters to make names.

Other Name collage - Write (or

use stickers) the child's

name on a piece of pa-

per. Provide collage mate-

rials and glue and let the

child decorate the area

surrounding the name (or

the letters if they are large

enough).

Sticky flower art - Fun sen-

sory art experience for chil-

dren. (TF)

Cupcake liner flowers - Use

cupcake liners and but-

tons to make a variety of

flowers. (TF)

Flower parts collage - After

dissecting the Chrysanthe-

mum for science and using

some parts for math, use

the pieces to create a

multi-media art collage.

Flower petal sensory play -

Use leftover chrysanthe-

mum flower petals and

water for a simple, engag-

ing sensory activity. Op-

tional: add glitter. (TF)

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

Math

Numbered Flowers - Use the print-

able flower number cards. Chil-

dren can use the printable flower

petals or real flower petals to add

the correct amount to each card.

Flower Patterns - Use the printable

flowers to make a variety of pat-

terns.

Literacy

Building Names - Use Unifix Cubes

with letters written on them to

build names (the child’s, family

members’ names, etc.).

Flower Letters - Match uppercase

and lowercase letters using the

printable flower letters. Make

words and names, too.

Science

Science Journal - Use independ-

ent time to record observations of

the grown chrysanthemum, the

growing seeds, the dyed flower

experiment, and the dissected

plant.

Label a Flower - Put together the

flower part puzzle. Draw your own

flower and label it.

Sensory

Coffee and flower sensory bin

- Add coffee beans and flow-

ers to a sensory bin. (TF)

Simple Name Bin - Add your

favorite sensory filler to a bin.

Include magnetic letters and/

or letter cards. Children can

search for letters to make

names. (TF)

Block Play

Build Names - Tape letter

cards to blocks. Build vertical

names using the letter blocks. (TF)

LEGO Flowers - Design and

build flowers using LEGO

bricks.

Arts and Crafts

Coffee Filter Sun Catcher - Use

watercolors or paint to decorate

three coffee filters. Then use scis-

sors to fringe edges. Glue togeth-

er at center and hang up.

Flower Stamping - Use some of

the chrysanthemum flowers to

stamp and paint with. (TF)
