Time/Lesson

5 minutes Start of Class:Review basic facts of immigration from chapter reading

10-15 minutes

Introduction of Lesson:I. Opening Activity—Reading cartoonsA. Students will study two J. Keppler cartoons (Document A)1. J. Keppler drew the first cartoon in 1880 and th second in 1893.

Describe the two cartoons. What are the differences in point of view between them? Why do you think attitudes on immigration changed?

2. Do you think that there has been a change of attitudes on immigration recently in this country? In what way did the attacks of 9/11 immigration policies? In what way has subject of “illegal immigration” influenced attitudes toward immigrants?

- Students will work with partners around them to discuss the questions about the polticial cartoons. There is a space provided for them to write down their possible answers and thoughts.

- Reconvene as a class to discuss

Lesson Instruction:II. Poetry Analysis

Students will read two poems on attitudes towards immigration (Documents B & C)

1. How does Emma Lazarus portray immigrants in “The New Colossus”? Why is her poem on the Statue of Libery?

2. How does Thomas Bailey Aldrich portray immigrants in “Unguarded Gate”? Why is he concerned with immigration?

- Students will again work with partners nearby to read the poems and analyze the content based on the questions and prior knowledge.

- Reconvene as a class to discuss materialAssessments/Checks for Understanding:Formative assessment: Students will hand in the worksheet for the day with their responses written based on their partner work and class discussion. - This lesson gives a broad overview of the two sided perspective of immigration to the United States during the 1920s—both positive and negative.

Closure/Wrap-Up/Review:Hand out the excerpt of the Immigration Act of 1924 and describe the debate for tomorrow on whether or not to pass this act.- Sides will be assigned
