showmanship to a judge 2:26 – 2:35
How many of you have ever won any sort of championship at any point in your life? Show of hands. How long ago was that? Raise hand call on a few. Do you still value/cherish that experience? That is how showmanship works. You win a ribbon/prizes/bragging rights for being the best at showing your animal or having the best animal.
Classwork
2:35 – 2:45 Video – Intro to swine showmanship How many of you know what swine showmanship
looks like? For those of you who don’t, I want you to picture what you think it looks like. Write that thought down and tell me afterwards if that’s what you thought it would be like. Show Video. Is that what you thought it would be like? Why or why not? Well, there are 2 types of shows. Market show means you show your buyer your pig in the best way possible so they buy it at a fair price, to showcase your skills in showing your animal, knowledge of the swine industry etc. Showmanship is showing off your ability to show your animal. The judge is only looking at you during this round, not your pig. Here is where you have to showcase all of your abilities and how well you know how to show the animal.
2:45 – 2:55 On a piece of paper jot down these points: While kids are writing these down, every 3 -4 points, have a couple more kids come up and show with
an invisible pigo The Official showing uniform is your official FFA jacket and tie or scarf with a white shirt,
white show pants, and appropriate shoes (Boots)o The purpose of show whites to show how clean you can keep yourself and your animal in
the show ring - it makes for a better showmano Eye contacto 15 ft from judgeo Keep pig between you & the judgeo Show judge all sides of your pig (left, right, walking away, walking towards judge)o Only look @ pig for 1 second (1 one thousand)o Eyes up here, but you still see and control the pigo If judge moves, you move! He has to be able to see your pig to judge you!o To guide the pig tap at its jowels - that isn't a cut of meat so it's okay to hit there
o Show stick is an extension of your armo If you hit it on its butt or it's. loin those are your biggest value cuts of meat don't hit there or
you will damage the meato Don't cross in front of your pig - if it sees you it will stop/change directionso Don't let your pig get into a corner lay down or run away from youo Penning is a good thingo Penning or being penned means that the judge thinks you are good and wants to hold you
in for the final drive of the class (the final round)o The goal is for the judge to see you early and get penned earlyo Strict no talking rule anytime you're in the ring or pens - I've seen kids get disqualified for
Being talked to or talking to people when they're being pennedo The judge may or may not ask you questions about knowledge of taking care of pigs or of
your pig. Study the basics about swine, cuts of meat, and especially know your pig's average daily gain weight litter number pig number breed and any other important information about your pig
o After the show is over make sure you shake the judges hand out of respect and thank him for judging
2:55 – 3:05 We will now have a regular show with half of the class showing with A balloon pig. They will be round 1. The second group will be round two. We will have the judge choose them for penning and if they are penned all regular show rules apply if they talk they are disqualified.
Other half of group judges from afar without talking during the show After the two rounds will have a final drive out of the people that got penned. This is the final
round That determines the winners for showmanship
3:05 – 3:10 – Collect materials and have students return to their seats. Conclusion: We will also do this Monday down at the farm with a group of actual live pigs for
those who want to try and compete in the same type of rounds we did today Was showing the balloon easy or hard? How do you think it will compare to using the real pigs Write reflection/something new that you learned and whether or not you are willing to try this
with live pigsAdaptations
