    IMPERIAL PRIMARYSENIOR PHASE

    LESSON PLAN: 1

    GRADE : 7e LEARNING AREA : MathematicsEDUCATOR : A Smith THEME/TOPIC : Number PatternsDURATION : 1 x 1hr DATE : 12 August 2009YEAR : 2009 TERM : 3

    LEARNINGOUTCOMES:

Learning Outcome 2: PATTERNS, FUNCTIONS AND ALGEBRA

The learner will be able to recognise, describe and represent patterns andrelationships, as well as to solve problems using algebraic language and skills.

    ASSESSMENTSTANDARDS:

7.2.1 Investigates and extends numeric and geometric patterns looking for arelationship or rules, including patterns:

    represented in physical or diagrammatic form;

    found in natural and cultural contexts;

    represented in tables.

7.2.2 Describes, explains and justifies observed relationships or rules in ownwords.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:The learner should have an awareness of patterns in and around his own world. The learner shouldve been exposed to square numbers. The learner should also be able extend an existing pattern

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/

    ATTITUDES/ VALUES:

Drawing skills, counting skills, reasoning skills, predicting skills. The learner will learn how to extend number patterns. The learner will learn to find a rule to explain number patterns. The learner will learn how to be sensitive towards the occurrence of patterns in nature and intheir communities and neighbouring township.

    ACTIVITIE

    S

    EDUCATOR LEARNER TASK:

    INTRODUCTION:

Show learners a picture of African Art depicting patterns.

Ask them to find patterns within artwork.

Explain to them that patterns can be consistent andrepetitive and

It can change consistently, or vary.

    MIDDLE:

Invite learners to extend a pattern that the educatorcreates in front of learners on the interactive whiteboard.

Invite learners to make predictions and suggestionsabout the pattern.

Explain the fact that variables influence outcomes.

Hand out two activities that will allow learners todemonstrate their ability to make mathematical sense outof the posed problems.

Facilitates and guides learners with minimal prompts.

    KEY CONCEPTS:

Patterns enable us to make predictions about whatwill happen under certain conditions; and

Predictions about the conditions needed for certainevents to occur.

    CONCLUSION:

Ask individual learners to present their work to the rest ofthe learners.

Ask learners to talk about finding their rule.

Invite learners to complete a self-assessment sheet toreflect on their own learning.

Learners observe andlook at African artworkpresented.

Learners try to findpatterns within artwork.

Some learners goes up tothe InteractiveWhiteboard to helpcomplete an existingpattern.

    Learners makepredictions andsuggestions about the

    pattern. Completes hand-outs.

    Gives feedback to class.

    Completes an individualSelf-assessment.
