Lesson: Kingdom Protista
KINGDOM :PROTISTA
KINGDOM PROTISTA Protista are micro-organisms that have a nucleus (like
plant and animal cells).
There are thousands of species and they are found almost anywhere.
amoeba have adaptations that let them behave a bit like an animal.
Keywords and vocabulary Autographs: makes its own food
Heterotrophs: has to consume food
Eukaryotes: has a nucleus
Prokaryotes: doesn’t have a nucleus (bacteria only)
Multicellular: many celled
Unicellular: one celled.(need a microscope to see them)
Protist
Kingdom Protista: ProtozoaProtozoa tend to be found in water and damp places
• Many different types that vary in size, shape, how they feed and how they move
• Many cause disease
• The Plasmodium species is responsible for 85% of malaria cases.
Kingdom Protista: Algae• Most common in water and on
surfaces of moist soil, wood & rocks
• Very diverse in structure & size - ranges from microscopic to 60 metre long kelps found in the sea!
ALGAE Algae is a plant-like organism. Like plants, it has
chlorophyll and produces food through photosynthesis and is the only protista that does this.
However, algae does not have stems or leaves and its roots are different from plant roots.
It ranges from single-celled microscopic algae found in lakes to multi cellular 60 metre long kelps found in the sea.
KINGDOM FUNGI General features of fungi are as follows:
Fungi are eukaryotic, organisms.
The growth rate of fungi is slower than that of bacteria.
The Kingdom Fungi consist of both unicellular (e.g. Yeast, Molds) and multicellular (e.g. mushrooms) organisms.
Like plant cells, fungi have cell walls made up of called chitin. But unlike plants, they do not undergo
Photosynthesis
Kingdom Fungi: Yeast
• Microscopic• Single-celled
• When bread is made, yeast is added to the dough to make it rise
Kingdom Fungi: Mould• Multi-cellular
• Grows on decaying food
• Penicillin (an antibiotic) is made from mould and it fights infections caused by bacteria
Kindgom Fungi: Mushrooms Some fungi start from microscopic filaments
which grow bigger and bigger until we can see them with our eye.
• Multi-cellular• Look like plants, but do not produce their own food
