Lesson 6.2 ~ Angles and the Unit Circle

Objectives:

• I can find the degree measure of an angle in standard position. • I can sketch the degree measure of an angle in standard position. • I can identify coterminal angles. • I can find the sine and cosine of angles.

Let’s look at some definitions:

An angle is in STANDARD POSITION when the vertex is at the origin, and one ray is on the positive x‐axis.

The ray on the positive x‐axis is called the INITIAL SIDE.

The other ray forming the angle is the TERMINAL SIDE.

We measure angles by measuring the amount of rotation from the initial side to the terminal side.

The angle measure is POSITIVE when the rotation from the initial side is counterclockwise.

The angle measure is NEGATIVE when the rotation from the initial side is clockwise.

Without looking at a graph, how can you show that an angle of 3000 is coterminal with an angle of 600?

How many coterminal angles are possible for an angle of 600?

NOTE:  Before you use your calculator to find the cosine or sine of an angle, you must make sure that it is in the correct mode.  Press the “Mode” button on your calculator, scroll down to the “radian degree” line, highlight “degree” and press enter.
