APPLY
Animated Lesson:Recognise and sort
Recognise that 2D shapes have different numbers of sides and corners and straight or curved sides. Song: It’s Time to Shape Up
identify sides and corners on a triangle. Sort 2D shapes based on the differences in their sides and corners. Sort squares and rectangles.
Worksheet 1Sides and corners
Vocabulary:Shape Sort, Dotty Shapes, Shape Words
Recognise shapes and their words. Reinforce correct formation of shapes.
match shapes to their words. Draw shapes using a set of dots as corners.
Worksheet 2Vocabulary
Find:Shape Monsters, Four in a Row, Sides and Corners, Continue the Pattern
Identify a given shape. Recognise whether a shape is flat (2D) or solid (3D). Count the number of sides and corners on a shape. Recognise a pattern.
choose the given shape. Match the labels 2D and 3D to the correct shapes. Answer the question, How many sides/corners? Choose the next item in the pattern.
Worksheet 3Shape sort
Count:Double Bugs, Smaller or Larger Number
Counting skills:understand how to make a double. Recognise which number is smaller and which is larger.
find the identical group and the double number. Label two numbers smaller and larger.
Worksheet 4 Check
Read:Book
Read aloud book. listen, follow the reading and read along.
Mathseeds book 52: Sides and Corners
Learning objectivesChildren will:• count the number of sides and corners on basic 2D
shapes.• recognise the difference between straight and curved
sides.• match 2D shapes to their names.• identify whether shapes are 2D or 3D.

ACMNA005 Sort and classify familiar objects and explain the basis for these classifications.
Measurement and GeometryShape
ACMMG022 Recognise and classify familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects using obvious features; focus on geometric features and describing shapes and objects using everyday words such as ‘corners’, ‘edges’ and ‘faces’.
Key vocabularysort, shape, sides, corners, straight, curved, triangle, circle, square, rectangle, numerals 1–20, match, double, same, smaller, larger, flat, 2D, solid, 3D, how many, pattern
Extra assistanceThe difference between two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects can be a tricky concept for
some students. Try some of these ways of explaining the difference.• 2D means it is a flat shape; 3D objects are solid.• You can pick up a 3D object; you can draw a 2D
shape.• 2D shapes can be put together to make 3D objects.• Trace around a 3D object to make 2D shapes.• 2D shapes have sides and corners; 3D objects have
faces, edges and corners.• 2D has length and width; 3D has length, width and
depth.
Classroom activitiesSort Them Out
Put the class in small groups and have a set of flats (2D shapes) and solids (3D objects) for each group. Discuss differences – sides, corners, and faces. Ask students to sort the flats into two or more groups, then explain their classification system. Now ask them to do the same with the solids. Praise all classification systems which can be explained.
Match Up!
Give half the class a triangle, rectangle, square or circle image on a card and the other half has a matching word. Give them a time limit to find a partner and sit together. Then ask them to draw that shape in their book and label it. Shuffle and hand out the cards again until all students have all four shapes in their books.
