Elements of Art: Line
Line is:
A continuous mark on a surface. It is often referred to as a
Moving point.
Lines can express emotion.
Lines can vary in width, direction, and length.

Character of Line
Some Types of Line
• Outlines- Lines made by the edge of an object or its silhouette.
• Contour Lines- Lines that describe the shape of an object and the interior detail.
• Gesture Lines or Line of Action- Line that are energetic and catches the movement and gestures of an active figure.
• Calligraphic Lines- Greek word meaning “beautiful writing.” Precise, elegant handwriting or lettering done by hand. Also artwork that has flowing lines like an elegant handwriting.
• Implied Line- Lines that are not actually drawn but created by a group of objects seen from a distance. The direction an object is pointing to, or the direction a person is looking at.

Implied Lines
•Implied Line- Lines that are not actually drawn but created by a group of objects seen from a distance. The direction an object is pointing to, or the direction a person is looking at.
Shape
Shape is:
A two-dimensional object with a recognizable boundary.
Shape can be measured by width and height.
Shapes can be catagorized as Geometric or Organic.
Shapes Can Be:
Organic: They appear to be from or related to a growing organism.
Geometric: Mathematically devised i.e. circle, square, triangle, octagon, etc…
