    Name:

    Pivotal Transfer Technique

The pivotal-transfer technique involves manipulating the original working pattern into a new

shape by pivoting, shifting and tracing, instead of cutting.

    1. The working pattern is placed on top of pattern paper with a push pin placed through the

    pivotal point.

    2. To transfer a dart to a new location, the dart is marked on the paper underneath and then

traced on to an existing dart on the pattern.

    3. The pattern is then pivoted, closing original dart legs while opening space for the new

    dart.

    4. The remaining untraced pattern is traced to paper underneath.

    5. Once an area of the pattern has been traced, it is not traced again.

Directions: Follow the instructions below to create six miniature two dart models. Put the models into

your patternmaking copybook next to the directions of how to create each model.

Directions for Changing Dart Locations on a Two Dart Pattern

    1. Bust and Waist Dart: the bust and waist dart are the two dart standard pattern.

Pattern Plot and Manipulation1. No slash lines or manipulation is needed.

    2. Template serves as an example of the basic two dart pattern.

    2. Mid-Shoulder and Waist Dart: The bust dart is relocated to the mid-shoulder.

Pattern Plot and Manipulation:1. Place pattern on paper with push pin through bust point. Mark mid-shoulder. Label C.2. Mark dart leg B and trace to point C going counterclockwise.

    3. Pivot pattern downward until dart leg A touches B on paper.4. Mark point C at mid-shoulder and trace to dart leg A.5. Remove pattern and draw dart to bust point.

    3. Mid-Armhole and Waist Dart: The bust dart is relocated to the mid-armhole.Pattern Plot and Manipulation:

    1. Place pattern on paper with push pin through bust point. Mark mid-armhole. Label C.

    2. Mark dart leg B and trace to point C going counterclockwise.3. Pivot pattern downward until dart leg A touches B on paper.

    4. Mark point C at mid-armhole and trace to dart leg A.5. Remove pattern and draw dart to bust point.

    4. Mid-Neck and Waist Dart: The bust dart is relocated to the mid-neck.

Pattern Plot and Manipulation:1. Place pattern on paper with push pin through bust point. Mark mid-neck. Label C.2. Mark dart leg B and trace to point C going counterclockwise.

    3. Pivot pattern downward until dart leg A touches B on paper.

    4. Mark point C at mid-neck and trace to dart leg A.5. Remove pattern and draw dart to bust point.

    5. Shoulder-Tip and Waist Dart: The bust dart is relocated to the shoulder-tip.

Pattern Plot and Manipulation:1. Place pattern on paper with push pin through bust point. Mark shoulder-tip.

    Label C.

    2. Mark dart leg B and trace to point C going counterclockwise.3. Pivot pattern downward until dart leg A touches B on paper.

    4. Mark point C at shoulder-tip and trace to dart leg A.

    5. Remove pattern and draw dart to bust point.

    6. Center Front Neck and Waist Dart: The bust dart is relocated to the center front neck.

    Pattern Plot and Manipulation:

    1. Place pattern on paper with push pin through bust point. Mark center front neckLabel C.

    2. Mark dart leg B and trace to point C going counterclockwise.

    3. Pivot pattern downward until dart leg A touches B on paper.4. Mark point C at shoulder-tip and trace to dart leg A.

    5. Remove pattern and draw dart to bust point.
