    Lesson Overview

Last time, we learned more aboutdivision.

We learned that fractions showthe numerator being divided by

    the denominator (example8

    2is 4

    because 8 2 is 4.

We learned how to dividedfractions by a whole number usinga visual model.

Today, we will be dividing wholenumbers by fractions using visualmodels. See if you notice adifference!

Measurement Division. Measurement division questions tell us the original amount, and the

size of one part. We use measurement division to find the total

number of parts. For example: You know when a question is askingfor measurement division because it asks how many _______ are in

    _______?

    Example: How many1

    are in 2 wholes?

2 is the original amount. 3is the part. How many of those parts are ithe whole?

    1 2 3 4 5 6There are 6 owholes.

    A different example

Mr. E used 9 cups of cherries to make cherry waffles. If this was 4of the

original amount of cherries that he started with, what was the originalamount of cherries?

    A) Is this question asking us to find how many three-fourths are in 9?

    Lets Use a Model!

Mr. E used 9 cups of cherries to make cherry waffles. If this was

    4of

the original amount of cherries that he started with, what was theoriginal amount of cherries?

    ?9cups of cherries

How can we find the answer using this model?

    What is the missinumber?

    11/13

    Lets Use a Model!

Mr. E used 9 cups of cherries to make cherry waffles. If this was

    4of

the original amount of cherries that he started with, what was theoriginal amount of cherries? There were originally 12 total cherries.

    39cups of cherries

How can we find the answer using this model? We can divide

by 3 to get the amount of cherries for each rectangle (3) and

then multiply by 4 because there are 4 rectangles.

    What is the missinumber? 3

    3 33

    9 is

    4of 12.

Mr. E is freezing 8 cups of cherries. If this is 2of the total number of cherries he

bought, how many cups of cherries did he buy? Use a model to show youranswer

Mr. Campbell is cutting tomatoes to make tomato soup. He has cut 10 tomato

so far. If the 10 tomatoes represent5

8of all the tomatoes that he needs to cut,

how many tomatoes need to be cut in all? Use a model to show your answer.

Rewrite each problem as a multiplication question. Use a model toshow your answer.

    A) Mr. E is typing up Christmas presents. He used 6 feet of ribbon. Th

    represents

8of the total amount of ribbon he started with. How

much ribbon did Mr. E have at the start? Use a model to show youranswer.

    B) How many quarter hours are in 5 hours? Use a model to show yoanswer.
