The definition of a rectangle is 4 corners and 4 straight sides. Students need to be aware that a square is different to a rectangle because it has 4 equal sides. If the sides are not the same length it is a rectangle. Give them sorting activities using rectangles and squares to reinforce the difference. For advanced students you could introduce the concept that a square is a type of rectangle. Classroom activities What is it? Provide the students with a piece of paper that has a lot of dotted rectangles on it and the word rectangle in dotted writing at the top. They should trace over the word and the shape outlines with different coloured pencils or crayons. Then they can use each rectangle to draw an object that has a rectangular shape, eg a TV, a mobile phone, a book, a ruler, and so on. Make it! Give each student some playdough, plasticine or clay to make a rectangle. They could also collect natural items such as leaves and twigs to combine with their modelling material to make all the shapes they know – circle, square, triangle, rectangle.
