3: WATER MENISCUS When water is in a thin

tube, usually glass, it does not have a flat surface at the top. Instead, the top is curved, which is referred to as the meniscus.

When reading the volume

of liquid, you should read from the bottom of the meniscus.

4: READING A MENISCUS The volume of water

in the picture to the right should be read as 18 mL – not 18.5 mL.

5: PRACTICE READING THE MENISCUS…What is the volume in

each graduated cylinder?

6: TIPS FOR MEASURING LIQUIDS Always put the graduated cylinder or

beaker on the table.

Move your head so that you are looking at the measurement at eye level.

7: IMPORTANT!!! Measuring liquids accurately is

essential!!!

Otherwise, the experiment may not work.

8: CLEANING GLASS Most glass gets broken during cleanup.

Turn the water on BEFORE you put the glassware under the faucet.

Wet glass is slippery – be careful.

If you accidently break glass- do not attempt to clean it up!!! Tell Ms. M immediately and she will clean it up.
