Now read the following advertisements through in your best advertising voice! Think about which words need emphasising and why.
Great work! Now have another look at the articles and magpie some of the really good language. Use a circle map to show your magpied words/ phrases. Challenge: try to use the frame of reference around the edge to explain WHY they are persuasive. Clue: Think about what impact they are having on the reader.

Lesson 2To consider the effect language choices have on the reader.
Yesterday we completed a circle map to help us understand what makes some language persuasive.
Remember! To persuade someone means you are trying to convince them. We are trying to convince the reader to do or believe what we want them to do.
We will be writing an advertisement for a location in the USA. So, we are trying to persuade (or convince) the person reading that they should visit where we are advertising.
The best way to persuade someone of something is to exaggerate what you are convincing them about.
Exaggerate means to make something sound better than it actually is.
The beautiful castle is a great photograph opportunity.
Becomes…
Enjoy the sight of the magnificent, dazzling castle,
the perfect opportunity to take some exquisite memory capturing photographs to
share with your loved ones.
The Disney Castle in Disneyland Paris
Enjoy the nice views of the Solent and busy city of Portsmouth from
the Spinnaker Tower.
Becomes…
Take in the breathtaking views of the captivating Solent and the splendid
sights of the buzzing city of Portsmouth from the spectacular
Spinnaker Tower.
The Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth
Now it’s your turn! Remember to use exaggeration to be more persuasive.
The busy city of New York is a good place to visit.
Write your own sentences but make it more persuasive than the sentence above!
Times Square New York City, USARemember to refer back to your circle map of how to make the places sound the best in the world
The Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA Now try this one! Remember you are persuading people why they should visit this place.
Hanalei Bay, Hawaii, USA Last one! Persuade me to visit this beach.
ChallengeWrite a persuasive paragraph about why this beach is so spectacular!
Lesson 3To consider the effect persuasive techniques have on its audience
Today we will be looking at some advertisement posters and packaging.
Make a list of the following features you can spot in the advertisements. →Alliteration→Rhetorical Questions→Command sentences→Slogans →Images/Logos
Think about the impact these features had on you when you first looked at them. Which is the most persuasive… why? What was the part that really swayed your vote?
Task Time!
Now you need to design an advert for a place you really love and persuade us to as well!
Share your finished posters with us on the google drive. We would love to see your work!
Don’t just tell us it is. Use persuasive tools and phrases to make us really believe we love it too.
Lesson 4To be able to use persuasive language in a debate
Today we would like you to have a debate with someone. You could get creative with how you debate, could could debate with someone in your house or over the phone or on video call.
First choose a debate topic and write a list of arguments for both sides of the debate to prepare yourself.
Then look at the next slide for some great persuasive language you could use when debating.
Debate TopicsTheme Parks vs Museums
Take away food vs Home cooked foodVideo games vs Reading a book
Use some of these sentence starters to make your arguments more persuasive.
Once you have had the debate with someone, write some notes answering these questions...
→ What arguments were most impactful and why?→ Who was most persuasive?→ Who won the debate and why?… then share your notes with your teacher on google drive.
Lesson 5To complete effective research about a location in the USA
You can choose one of the following locations in the USA;
→ New York → Orlando
→ Las Vegas
Today we are going to begin our research for our persuasive advertisements.
Even though facts about population are interesting they are not persuasive! So we do NOT want to use too much information like this in our advertisements.
TaskDraw a tree map and add information about your chosen location. Take a look at the example tree map to magpie subheadings. Then research information about each subheading. When you are researching online, think about what we have learnt about persuasion. What information would be useful to persuade someone to visit your chosen location.
There are some fact files about each location after the tree map to help you get started with your research.
