DEFINITION

BELLY LANDING

A belly landing or gear-up landing occurs when an aircraft lands without its landing gear fully extended and uses its underside, or belly, as its primary landing device. Normally the term gear-up landing refers to incidents in which the pilot forgets to extend the landing gear, while belly landing refers to incidents where a mechanical malfunction prevents the pilot from extending the landing gear.

A SAS Scandinavian Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration LN-RDI performing flight SK-2867 from Bergen (Norway) to Copenhagen (Denmark) with 40 passengers and 4 crew, was on final approach to Copenhagen descending through a height of 1200 feet, when the crew did not receive a down and locked indication for the right hand main gear, while nose gear and left hand main gear appeared down and locked.

ACTIVITY 04 – Incident Report

The crew aborted the approach and requested vectors around the area for troubleshooting. The crew recycled the gear several times, each time the right hand main gear remained in transit without reaching its extended and locked position.

1. …was on final approach to… 2. …descending through… 3. a down and locked indication. 4. the right hand main gear. 5. nose gear appeared down and locked.

ACTIVITY 05 – VOCABULARY & STRUCTURE

6. The crew requested vectors. 7. …for troubleshooting 8. … recycled the gear 9. Reaching… 10. …extended and locked position.

Check the Vocabulary below and elaborate one sentence with each phrase. EX: 1… was on final approach to… Sentence: “The aircraft was on final approach to BSB airport when the captain decided to go around.”

The crew followed the alternate gear extension procedure and tried to manually pump the gear down, however without success. A second attempt to manually pump the gear down also failed, the right hand main gear remained near its up position. The crew finally decided to approach runway 04R and shut down the right hand engine shortly before touch down.

BELLY LANDING

The airplane touched down on its left main gear, nose gear, aft belly, right propeller and right wing, kept straight on the centerline for about 20 seconds before veering right departing the runway and coming to a stop in the area of taxiway C. The aircraft was evacuated through the left hand doors. No injuries occurred. The airplane received substantial damage, two runway edge lights were damaged.

ACTIVITY 06 – INTERACTONS

& FLUENCY

BELLY LANDING

The crew aborted the approach… The crew reported an unsafe gear indication for all three gear struts.. The airplane entered a holding to troubleshoot the problem for about 80 minutes…

Attempts to lower the gear alternatively failed… The aircraft performed a gear up landing on runway 33… The aircraft was evacuated after stand still. No injuries occurred.

BELLY LANDING

1. What kinds of damage do belly landings cause to an aircraft?

2. Have you ever experienced a crosswind? How does it increase the danger of performing a belly landing?

3. Simulate a speech to the passengers, informing them that you are going to perform a belly landing.

4. What technology exists in order to prevent a mechanical failure?
