Built on a shared ethos to celebrate future visionaries, GREY GOOSE vodka has collaborated with Central Saint Martins to launch the Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund, giving the next generation of talent an opportunity to study at CSM.

Renowned CSM alumni have been invited to create artwork personal to their own artistic style that is inspired by their interpretation of what it means to “Fly Beyond”. These artworks, along with donated pieces, will be auctioned to create the Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund.

The Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund

Page 4: Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund Auction

With financial pressure from all sides, the Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund is a vital part of our mission to keep the excellence of our education open to everyone regardless of background. The costs of postgraduate education can deter young artists and designers who may be considering further study at Central Saint Martins. The College thrives on the diversity of its students but could risk becoming an institution afforded only by the privileged, and in the longer term this could threaten the vitality of every aspect of industry.

The Les Visionnaires initiative is born from the mutual passions of CSM and GREY GOOSE for the power of creativity and the pushing of boundaries. We are extremely grateful to GREY GOOSE, who has been a wonderful partner in initiating this important new scheme.

Most importantly, this project is a demonstration of our alumni’s acknowledgement of the importance of arts and design education. Our thanks go to them in being so generous: by donating and creating the artworks in the Les Visionnaires collection they are enabling future students to share their experiences at CSM.

Further thanks go to PICTURE and Christie’s who have made the auction of this unique collection possible.

GREY GOOSE is honoured to be collaborating with Central Saint Martins, a world-renowned institution that has nurtured some of the world’s most successful creative talents.

The Les Visionnaires Scholarship Fund is a partnership founded with shared goals to fuel creativity and breakthrough innovation in the arts. GREY GOOSE creator François Thibault flew beyond the norm and achieved the extraordinary when he set out to create luxury vodka with taste in Cognac, a region renowned for its production of dark spirits.

We are sincerely grateful to all of the alumni who have supported this cause and hope that the interpretations of our iconic GREY GOOSE bottle go onto to fund an innovative and progressive future for the design and art industry.

“In typical Saint Martins’ style - I’m sure my old tutors would vouch for this - I sort of ignored the brief.

I usually work in black and white but at the time – it was summer – I was using colour. The weather affects my mood. I was happy because it was sunny, hence the colour. It’s lucky I didn’t draw it in February… it would’ve been laden with DOOM. ”

Will Broome moved to London to study fashion at Central Saint Martins but drifted into becoming an artist after his MA. He has collaborated with a variety of designers and businesses from Marc Jacobs to Bistrothque, SIBLING, Wedgwood, Missoni and Harvey Nichols.

“Executed by hand in super polished aluminium, Vodka Bouchon carries an extraordinary expression of power, freedom and creativity. Sweeping across and over the entire bottle like a frozen sail the mirror polished silver surface echoes its surroundings in an abstract painterly way. The bottle has been transformed from a carrier to a podium and in such a way we are celebrating creativity and contemporary culture. ”

Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard are founders of furniture design studio Fredrikson Stallard.

This hand-painted botanical design was first seen on the catwalk for spring/summer 2000, modelled by Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. Entitled Exotikarma, Vogue contributing editor Plum Sykes commented on the collection – “Take a London girl and send her on a trip—through Bali, Goa, and Ibiza — and you have Matthew’s glamorous and seductive vision of a well-dressed gypsy. ”

Matthew Williamson is internationally renowned for his recognisable signature aesthetic; a master of print, embellishment, attention to detail and kaleidoscopic colour. Alongside fashion, the brand is taking new steps into lifestyle and interiors, collaborating with Osborne & Little and The Rug Company among others.

“The Beyond Goose bottle weaves a scenario where the biology of the goose and their evolutionary adaptation to use stones (gastroliths) to grind food, is reimagined to create luxury gemstones. The anatomy of the goose and the evolutionary marvel of the bird’s flight creates a product that uses the preserving qualities of vodka, a global marketplace and the goose’s gizzard, to polish gemstones that are not only a vital tool in the bird’s digestive system, but also becomes a precious product bound for the marketplace. ”

Michael Burton and Michiko Nitta (BurtonNitta) are an art & design duo based in London with work exhibited internationally.

“Flight is freedom. I wanted to express this through simple lines of movement and lightness. Freedom to create is what we are trying to achieve through Les Visionnaires – I hope it will help many dreams to take flight. ”

Launching her eponymous shoe range in 2002, Beatrix was listed in the Independent’s Top 10 Leading Shoe Designers, alongside Manolo Blahnik. “I arrived in London in the summer of 1977 complete with a plastic leather jacket, blue cotton drainpipes and dirty white plimsolls. This photograph was taken in the basement corridor in St. Martin’s, with me practising my best art-school sneer. I started the Graphics course there the following year, determined to spend the rest of my teenage years at the coolest place in London. ”

Dylan Jones is editor-in-chief of British GQ and the chair of London Collections: Men. He has won the BSME Editor of the Year Award eleven times and has written several critically acclaimed books. He was awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to publishing.

“Elvis is an ongoing fascination for me, particularly the choices he made in presenting himself through costumes. The cape signifies luxury and has an enduring connection with ceremonial outfits. On stage Elvis would use his cape as a prop, spreading it wide as he knelt head bowed in a strangely moving mixture of submission and triumph. ”

Artist, writer and curator Cathy Lomax established the artist-led Transition Gallery. Cathy has been awarded an Abbey Painting Fellowship and been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2010) and the East London Painting Prize (2014 and 2015). She publishes two art and culture magazines, Arty and Garageland.

Lot 11Jean-Pierre Braganza

“I was inspired by my fascination with natural flight. I find it amazing how birds fly with such ease and how beautiful they look with out-stretched wings. I tend to gravitate towards birds that evoke darkness, such as the Raven as they are one of the most intelligent species of bird and have been considered as spiritual or god-like in historic cultures. ”

Womenswear designer Jean-Pierre Braganza has developed a signature style incorporating tailoring and drape, structured panels and personally designed digital prints. He draws influence from music, along with dystopian science, architecture, and the contrast between geometric and organic shapes.

Jarvis guest-edited the Observer Music Monthly, curated the Southbank Centre’s Meltdown Festival and performed a duet with The Gossip’s Beth Ditto for the NME Awards. They covered fellow Sheffield band Heaven 17’s ‘Temptation’, which was later released to profit homelessness charity Shelter. He also celebrated Rough Trade Records’ 30th anniversary with the ‘Looking Rough at 30’ tour and guest-edited BBC Radio 4’s prestigious ‘Today’ programme.

Lot 14Afroditi Krassa

“The iconic goose illustration and the magical world of children’s fairytales inspired our artwork. As the goose conjures images of fantastical flying, the built up layers on the bottle transform it into a story of the imaginary flight of the goose and its friends through the fields. ”

Having trained as a product designer Afroditi’s first foray into hospitality design was the creation of Japanese food chain ITSU, with Julian Metcalfe. Described as “a monumental talent” by Hospitality Interiors, Afroditi’s studio has an enviable list of clients including Hilton, Heston Blumenthal and Curzon. When not designing, Afroditi teaches, writes about and judges design.

“I have worked as a stylist, photographer and curator, but I am best known as a fashion writer. It was for this reason that I wanted to put words on the bottle. The words are typed with the Olivetti 35 manual portable typewriter that I used throughout art school and have continued to employ in my work. ”

Award-winning writer Iain R Webb has been fashion editor for BLITZ, Harpers & Queen, The Times and Elle. Iain is an associate lecturer in Fashion Communication and Promotion and Central Saint Martins, and lives in Bath where he consults for the Fashion Museum.

“The geese meeting in the air represents ‘the meeting of great minds’ – as I believe this is one of the most important things I gained from my time at CSM. The sharing of ideas that started at college has continued throughout my career, and I still collaborate with many of my contemporaries, all of whom have gone on to be experts in their fields. ”

Hannah Martin established the first fine jewellery house for men, as well as women, creating decadent, beautifully crafted treasures, that do not compromise masculinity but luxuriate in it. Hannah is also an associate lecturer in Jewellery Design at CSM.

Terence Conran has had more impact than any other designer of his generation on everyday life in contemporary Britain. As founder of the Storehouse Group he ran Heals, British Home Stores and Mothercare, and set up Next. He owns The Conran Shop, with stores in London, Paris, New York and across Japan.

The success of his enterprises influenced British government to recognise the economic value of design. In the 1980s he helped establish the Boilerhouse project, putting design on the cultural landscape in Britain, which has since become the present Design Museum.
