    Legislative Library News

    Newspapers on microfilm

The Manitoba Legislative Library has the largest collection of original

and microfilmed Manitoba newspapers in the world, available for use

by Manitoba Government employees, researchers, educators, and

students interested in the history of the province. Our newspaper

collection includes rare and last copies of Winnipeg and rural

Manitoba titles dating to the 19th century, as well as current issues of

Winnipeg and rural Manitoba newspapers. Microfilming of Manitoba

newspapers allows printed copies of newspapers to be preserved in

their original state, while still providing full access to the newspaper

    collection to all library users.

    Librarian’s Picks

    Delivering on digital :

    the innovators and

    technologies that are

    transforming

    government / William D.

    Eggers.

    New York : Deloitte

    University Press, 2016. vi,

    289 pages.

    From the publisher:

    How can governments

    upgrade to the digital age?

    Delivering on Digital is a

    guide to making this promise

    a reality.

    When HealthCare.gov went

    live in October 2013, many

    called the website a

    catastrophe. For the U.S.

    Federal government,

    however, the problem-

    plagued launch ultimately

    proved pivotal: it

    underscored the necessity of

    digital excellence in public

    institutions and inspired

    hundreds of the tech

    industry’s best and brightest

    to come to Washington with

    the singular mission to

    modernize government.

[…] So how do you take a

    government built on

    agrarian- and industrial-era

    frameworks and redesign it

as a fully digital state? We

must imagine a new kind of

    government.

[…] We now have the digital

    tools (cloud computing,

    mobile devices, analytics)

and the talent to stage a real

    transformation. This book

    provides the handbook to

    make it happen. William

    Eggers, author of eight

    books and a leading

    authority on government

    reform, knows how we can

    use tech-savvy teams, strong

    leadership, and innovative

    practices to reduce the risks

    and truly achieve a digitally

    transformed government.

    Hunting the northern

    character / Tony Penikett.

    Vancouver : Purich, 2017.

    336 pages.

    From the publisher:

    World leaders often invoke

    "the northern character," but

    what do they mean, exactly?

    Stereotypes abound, from

    Duddly Do-Right to Northern

    Exposure, but these southern

    perspectives fail to capture

    northern realities. During

    decades of service as a

    legislator, mediator, and

    negotiator, Tony Penikett

    witnessed a new northern

    consciousness grow out of

    the challenges of the Cold

    War, climate change, land

    rights struggles, and the

    boom and bust of resource

    megaprojects. His lively

  • MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE LIBRARY SNT February 2018 5 account of clashes and

    accommodations between

    Indigenous and non-

    Indigenous leaders not only

    retraces the footsteps of his

    hunt for a northern identity

but tells the story of an

    Arctic that the world does

    not yet know.

    Everyday heroes :

    inspirational stories

    from men and women

    in the Canadian Armed

    Forces / edited by Jody

    Mitic.

    Toronto : Simon & Schuster,

    2017. ix, 305 pages.

    From the publisher:

    In this moving collection of

    first-person accounts, the

    men and women of the

    Canadian Armed Forces take

us inside life in the military

    and share their personal

    stories of courage,

    perseverance, and sacrifice.

[…] Meet the World War II

    bomb aimer whose plane

    engines failed over Hamburg

    during a raid, the naval

    signalman who patrolled

    heavily bombarded waters in

    Southeast Asia during the

    Korean War, and the

    unarmed peacekeeper who

    found himself standing on a

    road riddled with mines in

    Rwanda. From the young

    recruit who marched over

    thirty kilometres on what

turned out to be a broken leg

to prove her mettle, to the

    three brothers in arms who

    endured a summer of

    relentless fighting in

    Afghanistan, this collection

    captures the pain and

    sacrifice, the risks and

    rewards of standing on guard

    for Canada.

    Featuring stories of

    courageous rescues, bravery

in the face of conflict, and

    camaraderie at home and

    overseas, Everyday Heroes is

    an authentic and stirring look

    inside the hearts and minds

of the men and women in

    the Canadian Armed Forces.

    These stories will make you

    proud to be a Canadian.

    Blockchain revolution :

    how the technology

    behind Bitcoin is

    changing money,

    business, and the world

    / Don Tapscott and Alex

    Tapscott.

    Toronto : Portfolio/Penguin,

    2016. xx, 348 pages.

    From the publisher:

    The technology likely to have

    the greatest impact on the

    future of the world economy

has arrived, and it’s not self-

    driving cars, solar energy, or

    artificial intelligence.

    It’s called the blockchain. […]

    Blockchain is the ingeniously

    simple, revolutionary

    protocol that allows

    transactions to be

    simultaneously anonymous

  • 6 MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE LIBRARY SNT February 2018 and secure by maintaining a

    tamperproof public ledger of

    value. Though it’s the

    technology that drives bitcoin

    and other digital currencies,

    the underlying framework

has the potential to go far

    beyond these and record

    virtually everything of value

    to humankind, from birth and

    death certificates to

    insurance claims and even

    votes. […]

    This technology is public,

    encrypted, and readily

    available for anyone to use.

    It’s already seeing

    wide-spread adoption in a

number of areas. […] As with

    major paradigm shifts that

    preceded it, the blockchain

    will create winners and

    losers. And while

    opportunities abound, the

    risks of disruption and

    dislocation must not be

    ignored.

    Don Tapscott, the bestselling

    author of Wikinomics, and

    his son, blockchain expert

    Alex Tapscott, bring us a

    brilliantly researched, highly

    readable, and utterly

    foundational book about the

    future of the modern

    economy. Blockchain

    Revolution is the business

    leaders’ playbook for the

    next decade and beyond.

    Roads to confederation

    : the making of Canada,

    1867 / edited by Jacqueline

    D. Krikorian, David R.

    Cameron, Marcel Martel,

    Andrew W. McDougall, and

    Robert C. Vipond ; with a

    foreword by Meric S. Gertler,

    Rhonda L. Lenton, and

    Mamdouh Shoukri.

    Toronto : University of

    Toronto Press, 2017. 2

    volumes.

    From the publisher:

    In recognition of Canada’s

    sesquicentennial, this two-

    volume set brings together

    previously published

    scholarship on Confederation

    into one collection. The

    editors sought to reproduce

    not only the "classic" studies

    about the people, ideas, and

    events associated with the

    passage of the British North

    America Act, 1867, but also

    scholarly works that capture

    the complexities of the

    Confederation project. This

    ambitious anthology

    challenges the notion that

    there exists one dominant

    narrative underpinning 1867,

    and includes research that

    focuses on Indigenous

    peoples. Seven articles

    written in French are

    translated for the first time

    for publication in this

    collection.
