Qu'est-ce que c'est?

• C'est un crayon.

(It's just any old pencil,not one in particular.)

But what if we want to talk about one pencil in particular?

Then we say "the pencil."

le crayon(the pencil)

In French, there are four different words that mean "the..."

• le – for masculine nouns that start with a consonant

• la – for feminine nouns that start with a consonant

• l' for nouns that start with a vowel• les – for all plural nouns (doesn't matter

whether masculine, femine or starting with a vowel.)
