A determiner (a and an in English) that introduces a noun phrase and implies that the thing referred to is non-specific

Example:

She bought me a book. = Elle m'a acheté un livre.

I saw an Elephant at the zoo.=Je l'ai vu un éléphant au zoo.

He went to a public school.=Il est allé à une école publique

Typically, the indefinite article is used to introduce new concepts into a discourse.

What are indefinite articles

A determiner (The in English) that introduces a noun phrase and implies that the thing mentioned has already been mentioned, or is common knowledge, or is about to be defined

Example› The book=Le livre › The art=L'art › The board=Le lit

What is a definite article?

In English there is only one article for nouns, for example

"The house".

However in French the article (Le, La, Les) will depend on the gender of the noun in question. All the nouns are masculine or feminine.

For masculine nouns "The" is Le, whilst for feminine nouns "The" is La. If the noun is plural then "The" becomes Les.

For example :› The boy = Le garçon

› The girl = La fille

› The houses = Les masions

What are masculine & feminine articles?

Un & Une is used for ‘A’

› Une for feminine things/persons› Un is used for masculine things/persons

Example:› A girl = Une fille› A boy = Un garçon

Definitive articles

LE is used a singular masculine noun:

When are Definite articles used?

Un is used with a singular noun.

Example:› Une tasse A cup› Un stylo A pen› Un cahier A notebook› Une image A picture
