Autrement.
Ever since Ludmilla Chiriaeff founded the company in 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de
Montréal has been communicating its passion for dance and firing the imagination of audiences
worldwide. This widely acclaimed company is devoted to developing ballet in all its forms, while
remaining faithful to the spirit of classical ballet.
Les Grands Ballets illuminates stages worldwide, particularly since the appointment of Gradimir
Pankov as Artistic Director in 1999. The company’s reputation was reinforced by many international
successes over the past few years: Oman (2012), China (2011), the Middle East (2009), North America
and Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich and three weeks at Les Étés de la danse in Paris). His leadership
and determination have been recognized by one of the “Top 25 Canadian Immigrants RBC 2014”
awards aimed to highlight the achievements of the 25 most outstanding Canadian immigrants of the
year. A leader among Montreal’s cultural institutions, the company now presents works by up-and-
coming artists — Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss, Stijn Celis — and great choreographers such as Jirí
Kylián, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Didy Veldman and Ohad Naharin.
The company has also made a strong commitment to the local community. Since 1997,
The Nutcracker Fund for Children has given thousands of children from disadvantaged commu-
nities an unforgettable Holiday Season, with educational workshops and a free performance of
The Nutcracker. In 2010, Les Grands Ballets launched The Nutcracker Market — Montreal’s first non-profit market — to raise money for this Fund.
Les Grands Ballets is currently preparing a number of large-scale projects, including the opening
of the National Centre for Dance Therapy. The company will also be relocating in 2016 to its new premises in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, a unique creative crossroads. All of these initiatives have one goal: to support the artistic vision of the company, to move the world, differently.

Acte 1
ARGUMENT
Photo (2011) : John Hall
Act 1
Leonce, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Popo, is lounging in the garden, idling
away the time as the Court Tutor desperately attempts to familiarize him with
the tasks of government. The cheerful and idle Valerio strikes up a friendship
with Leonce.
Two valets dress King Peter of Popo in his royal robes. A knot in his handkerchief,
serving as a memory aid, disrupts the ceremony. Neither he nor his ministers can
recall the precise reason for this reminder. At a royal dance in the ballroom of
the Kingdom of Popo, Leonce summons his mistress Rosetta to his side; bored
with her, he then sends her away. The President of the Privy Council explains that
the prince’s long-arranged marriage with Princess Lena must take place the fol-
lowing day. The court urges Leonce to finally meet his obligations. Leonce and
Valerio decide to flee.
Princess Lena, meanwhile, sits in the royal gardens of the Kingdom of Pipi, pon-
dering the meaning of life, a life in which she is to be married against her will, to
a man she doesn’t know. The arrangement forced upon her by her parents is too
much to bear. She longs to be free and plans—in an act of youthful bravado—to
escape with her governess. Shortly thereafter, near an inn, the paths of the two
couples cross.
Act 2
The guests are now in the garden, where Valerio and the Governess are in the
process of seducing each other. Beyond the hustle and bustle of the inn, Leonce
and Lena fall in love with each other. Between these two beings, for whom life
has been such a disappointment until now, intimate words are exchanged, full of
amorous passion, but also of skepticism. Within Leonce, this state of happiness
gives rise to a longing for death, which Valerio does his best to expunge.
In the Kingdom of Popo, the preparations for the marriage between the Prince
and Princess are well underway. The court is assembling, however, for a wedding
without a bride and groom. Leonce and Lena, Valerio and the Governess join
the guests, dressed as automatons. Led by Valerio, Leonce and Lena make their
way to the forefront. King Peter orders the two “strangers” to be married. After
the couple is unmasked, both the court and Leonce and Lena see the double
twist of fate: those destined to be forcibly married fell in love in total freedom,
and the court has married the couple that were declared missing. The affairs of
the Kingdom are now in the hands of Leonce. Valerio becomes a Minister of the
Crown and wants to declare a state of general idleness. Thus everything remains
in order, everyone assuming the position to which they were destined.

From 2010 to 2012, as resident conductor of the opera house in Bremen, he conducted sensational successes such as his ‘historically informed’ pro-ductions of German and Austrian operettas as well as the world premiere of Moritz Eggert’s every-day-life opera All diese Tage. Invitations have led to appearances conducting the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, Bochumer Symphoniker, Bergische Symphoniker, Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, Münchner Symphoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester Bad Reichenhall, Neue Philhar-monie Frankfurt, Georgian Chamber Orchestra and others. In August 2012, Florian Ziemen was appointed to the opera house of Gießen, where he conducts operas, symphony concerts and ballet productions.
- Florian Ziemen
To come back for Leonce & Lena is for me a pure delight! The comedy of mysterious prodigy Georg Büchner is for us in Germany a classic, but in its cunningly cryptic and deeply philosophical
character it remains an arcane gem. Our adventurous and challenging musical score, shamelessly mixing
Viennese dance music, classical avant-garde, electronic and pop, tries to catch the edgy spirit and particularly the hilarious and absurd wit of the piece
that Christian Spuck’s choreography brings so fantastically on the stage and into movement. Listen
to all those jokes in the music and have fun!

Georg Büchner was born in 1813 in Germany to an army doctor and physicist who primed him from an early age with a scientific approach to the world, which would later manifest itself in the sharp, realistic, and critical nature of his writing.
Büchner studied medicine in Strasbourg, where he immersed himself in French literature and political thought. Caught up in the movement inspired by the Paris uprising of 1830, he found-ed a radical society, the Society for Human Rights. He escaped arrest by fleeing to Zürich, where he wrote most of his literary work, including Leonce and Lena.
Long regarded as a light, ro-mantic comedy, the play is instead a satire employed by Büchner to criticize the absolutist end-of-reign society in which he lived. His three plays were clearly in-fluenced in style by William Shakespeare and by the German Romantic Sturm und Drang movement. Georg Büchner is now recognized as one of the outstanding figures in German dramatic literature.

Set in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles, the new home of Les Grands Ballets will meet the artistic needs of the company. The new rehearsal studios, built to international standards, will improve work conditions for the dancers, while the production studio devoted entirely to creation will allow the company to pursue its innovative path.
This relocation is also an opportunity for Les Grands Ballets to broaden its vision and increase its impact and influence. The new studios will also enable the new National Centre for Dance Therapy, launched in April 2013, to develop in close collaboration with the community.
