To whom it may concern,

As a skilled and experienced classroom music teacher, I am very interested in applying for the role of Scale

A Teacher at Tauranga Intermediate.

I am an experienced, New Zealand trained teacher, having held both generalist, and specialist music and

drama teaching positions in Scotland and in Auckland. In these capacities, I have taught a variety of levels

the full range of the curriculum, as well as involving myself in the directing of school productions and choirs

(involving students Yr 5 – Yr 10). I have also held, at various times, key responsibilities in ICT, including

the management of online learning projects and curriculum development.

I am a professional pianist, musical director, composer, conductor and arranger, and have established a large

number of connections with important cultural groups in and around the Bay of Plenty, including Tauranga

Girls High School, Taranga Boys High School, Aquinas College, Tauranga Music Theatre, Bay of Plenty

Symphonia, Tauranga Civic Choir, Scholars Pro Musica, Oreana Singers, Bay of Plenty Music School,

Tauranga Performing Arts Competitions Society, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and 16th Avenue Theatre. I also

have strong associations with the New Zealand National Youth Choir owing to my close work with its

conductor.

As well as being an active musician and performer, last year as part of my postgraduate studies in education

at the University of Waikato, I completed a dissertation examining the optimal music in schools curriculum

and how it might be delivered as a completely online learning package for both students and teachers. As

you can see from my CV, I have for a while now been involved in online, interactive curriculum

development for the tertiary sector, which has seen me develop creative and innovative blended learning

solutions for some of New Zealand’s most disengaged learners. This has brought me great enjoyment and given me a range of new skills that I would love to bring back to the classroom.

I am very much looking forward to heading back into the classroom. I am a passionate people person and

have missed working with young learners to help them realise their enormous potential. I believe everyone

can succeed in any endeavour they choose to, and that it is my role to facilitate opportunities for them to

harness their unique powers. Whether they come with emotional and behavioural disorders, are gifted and/or

talented, or are simply in need of motivation at a critical time of self-discovery, I want to be there to see them

grow and become successful citizens of their communities.

Please consider my application for this role and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks,

Leon Gray
