Hello and Welcome.

Welcome to the 2013 leominster Festival. Just eight short months ago, our new volunteer committee started planning this year’s show. if you had told us then that we’d be putting on over 80 events this summer, i think we could safely say that we’d be making bets about eating our hats. yet, here we are, and what a treat we have in store for you!

this year we’re celebrating all that is great in Leominster - from the rich heritage of the fabled ‘Lemster ore’ to our very own home grown artistic talent and, of course, everything in between.

And we’re going to share it with everyone: we’ll bring you poetry in pubs, literature in the Lion ballroom and crafty fun in the Community Centre. Family friendly events nestle alongside music recitals, poetry readings, lectures, guided walks, films...phew!

We’re trying out a few new things, too - some of our events are Pay What you Want. these events don’t have specific ticket prices: instead, we want you to pay what you can on the door - that way we can welcome everyone who wants to come, irrespective of income.

you may notice one or two sheepy goings on over the festival week. We’re delving into our heritage, exploring the heady world of the wool trade,

and how Leominster was key to its success in the 15th Century. Look out for our mascot baartram - his top picks on a woolly theme are on the next page and you’ll see him throughout the brochure, denoting ryeland-related events.

We’re delighted to be welcoming so many of the local licensees, in our very own Fringe festival - the response to put on events over the festival week has been overwhelming! What a great excuse to raise a glass. Purely medicinal, of course!

it’s vital to us that we know what you think about this year’s festival, so please do fill in feedback forms at events. they will help us to make next year even better - and it’s a big one for us, as it will be the 30th Festival. So, tell us what you think. Don’t be shy - we love reading forms!

We’re only here this year because of our sponsors, members, volunteers and you, our audience. Without all your support we wouldn’t be able to put the festival on. So we’d like to say a truly heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

So here’s to this year and beyond! We look forward to sharing the festival with you. because it is for you. And your friends. And your family. So bring them all along and be a part of it!

Ryeland sheep.leominster has an immensely rich history to delve into. this year we are exploring the part played by ryeland sheep, building on leominster in bloom’s initiative to erect a ryeland sheep statue in the town. For four centuries sheep rearing and wool processing were the backbone of the town’s economy.

ryeland wool, the fabled Lemster ore, was exported to milan and in the 1450s fetched well over double the price of most english wool. Felting in fulling mills and leather processing supported hat and glove making: Leominster’s streams and streets were a maze of industry and workshops. the image on this page is an early 20th century glass plate negative depicting Lemster ore still very present in the town. it forms part of the Winterbourne archive, which will be on display at the Library later this year.

there are lots of sheep-themed activities during this year’s festival, and we’ve tried our best to ensure there’s something for everyone. Look out for craft workshops where you can create your own pom-pom sheep, Sealegs Puppet theatre and their Little bo Peep show, local historian Peter holliday’s talk the making of a market town, our woolly Sheep trail around the town and the newly refurbished Grange Court open day, where all manner of ryeland activities will be taking place.

to guide you through, we’ve got our own ryeland mascot: baartram. Look out for this cheeky fellow popping up throughout the brochure, letting you know about all of the ryeland events.

Here are my top picks. look out for me throughout the brochure!

“i often walk with sketchbook and graphite along the lanes around yatton, finding fields of sheep and young lambs. they are a source of constant delight and inspiration.

Following a birthday lunch, i was snowed in at Far hall, Dolau with Julienne in January; eight foot snow drifts along the lanes made departure impossible, and so we enjoyed a time of peace and isolation, walking through snowy scenes of incredible beauty, returning to log fires and painting. We both love sheep in all their guises, and sheep in snow has become a recurring theme.”

our contribution to the Leominster Festival incorporates work, both from our shared snow scenes in January and from our own separate responses to sheep in herefordshire and Powys at other times.

it is a well known fact that royalty at one stage would only wear knitted socks made from ryeland Wool. but they were not the shearers... i will tell you more on the day!”

Gripping Yarns: Four novels and Five novelists tues 4 June 19.30 - 22.30 Community Centre Pay WHat yOu Want

Amanda Attfield, heide Goody and iain Grant, Jeff Phelps and mark Woodward introduce extracts from their recent novels, reveal the agony and ecstasy of novel-writing and respond to your writing and publishing questions.

their books feature Satan in suburbia, childhood tragedy in Shropshire, a plague of mice in bedsitland and dark secrets in the countryside. it’s some of the best new fiction around!

aManda attField’s book, living WitH Julia, is a dark rural novel, exploring a flawed set of characters whose friendship, lust, lies, rage and naivety unwittingly reveal something nasty at the bottom of the garden.

JeFF PHelPs’ current work in progress is set in the bridgnorth countryside. it deals with a childhood tragedy which continues to haunt the lives of the characters long after they have grown and moved on.

Heide gOOdy and iain grant’s comedy, clOvenHOOF, sees Satan fired from his job and exiled to that most terrible of places: english suburbia.

What is that scratching under the floorboards? And who’s been nibbling the Fondant Fancies? Mark WOOdWard’s first novel, MOuseMan, is a comic and unsettling account of the life of its anti-hero, mm, in early 1970s London.

The Making Of A Market Town Wed 5 June DoorS AnD bAr oPen 19.00 Lion bALLroomtiCKet: £5/£4 KinDLy SPonSoreD by LeominSter CiViC SoCiety AnD LeominSter hiStoriCAL SoCiety

Leominster has been an important market centre serving north herefordshire and regions much further afield for over 1000 years. in the middle Ages it provided fine quality wool to the merchants of europe and the english Court, while the town’s annual fair drew livestock dealers from all over Wales, the borders and the West midlands.

this illustrated talk will trace the town’s market development from earliest times, when the streets would be full of the sounds and smells of sheep, cattle, horses and pigs, to the present day when farm animals are rarely seen.

Peter holliday is a well respected local historian and was for many years the Librarian at Leominster Library.

A programme for the bi-centenary of Pride & Prejudice lasting seventy minutes, including a performance of ‘the three Sisters’ by Jane Austen aged fifteen.

it was not until the last years of her life that Jane Austen won fame. much of her adult life was spent “no more regarded in society than a poker or a fire-screen” though many pleasures sustained her.

Jane had been born with a crazy sense of fun. As a teenager, she wrote short plays and novels filled with ludicrous adventures and farce. her elder sister Cassandra produced caricatures to illustrate young Jane’s ‘history of england’.

All their lives these two were close. in childhood their mother had said “if Cassandra were going to have her head cut off, Jane would insist on having hers cut off too!”.
