Dear Parishioners,

Is God calling you? Our readings this week tell us to

listen for and to hear God's call. In our first reading, we

learn of Abram’s call from the Lord. Our second read-

ing tells us that God is calling us to a holy life, not that

we have done anything special but because it is God's

design for us. Then our gospel instructs us to listen to

Jesus because he is “my beloved son.” We must be

obedient to God's call just as Abram was. Abram was

told to leave the land of his father and go to an un-

known land and his name would become great.

What happens if we listen to Jesus? Maybe you feel

you have been listening for years and have not heard

Jesus’ call. Our first call is to be good Catholics. We

must be good Catholics in everything we do, in every

aspect of our life. Regardless of what our call is, we

must take Jesus with us everywhere we go. We have all

been called to be disciples of Jesus. Wherever your

work or your daily life takes you, you must reflect an

image of God. You must take Jesus with you.

Many of us have been called to the Sacrament of Mar-

riage. If we are married, it is not enough to just love

our spouse , we must love our spouse as Jesus loves us.

Our love cannot be self-centered; it must be centered

on our spouse and our relationship of our marriage. If

we are blessed with children, we must teach our chil-

dren that they are made in the image of God. Do not

allow them to waste their God-given talents; teach them

to grow and use these talents to benefit themselves, to

help others, and to illustrate the love of God.

You may feel as though you have reached the pinnacle

of your life. Your children are grown and on their own.

You may be retired from many years of hard work. Do

not give up. Do not think that life is over at this point.

Just take a moment and look back at the life of Abram.

He became Abraham to live out the rest of his life fol-

lowing what God had in store for him. There is still a

lot that you can do regardless of your age, to share

God’s love with others.

We never know how God is going to appear to us for

us to hear and receive that calling. As we learn from

scripture, God can appear in numerous ways. In chap-

ter 3 of Exodus, we learn that God appeared to Moses

in the burning bush.

Moses heard God speak to him and instruct him to go

to Pharaoh and ask to lead the Israelites out of Egypt,

the land of slavery. In chapter 18 of Genesis, we learn

that God came to

Abraham in the

form of three men

from the desert.

One of the men in-

formed Abraham

that his wife Sarah

would bear him a

son. It is believed,

by some theologi-

ans, that this was

God accompanied

by two angels. In

chapter 38 of Job,

we learn that God

appeared to Job in

what is believed to

be a tornado. Our

gospel of just a few weeks ago, when Jesus was baptized,

a voice from heaven tells us, “This is my beloved son,

my favor rests on him” (Mat. 3:17). This week our

Gospel tells us, “This is my beloved son on whom my

favor rests. Listen to him” (Mat. 17:5).

God’s appearances to these people are called theopha-

nies, visible appearances or manifestations of God that

are tangible to the human senses. We must always be

open to how God may reveal himself to us. God works

in many mysterious ways as we learn and see in scrip-

ture. We are neither too old or too whatever excuse we

may come up with to listen to what God has in store for

us nor are we incapable of acting on what or where God

guides us.

During this Lenten season, pray that God will come to

you and give you the ability to listen and to hear his

words. Pray for the strength to follow the path that God

is leading you. God may not speak to us from a burning

bush or send three men from the desert, but we must

be in tune to God, listen for his call, and be ready to

act.

Have a blessed and prayerful Lent,

Deacon John

The Divine Mercy Chaplet Tuesday - Friday following Mass

Litany to St. Augustine Each Tuesday after Mass

Litany to the

Sacred Heart of Jesus Every 1st Friday of the month 12:30

The following are part of the memorandum from the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship, regard-ing liturgical celebrations in the midst of public con-cerns regarding the spread of the coronavirus:

1. Priests, deacons and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are urged to practice good hygiene, washing their hands before Mass begins or even us-ing an alcohol based anti-bacteria solution before and after distributing Holy Communion.

2. If the faithful are sick or are experiencing symptoms

of sickness, they are not obliged to attend Mass, and,

even that, out of charity they ought not to attend.

3. Other precautionary measures to be adopted are,

suspending the exchange of the sign of peace (or ex-

changing without physical contact), suspending the

distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful via the

chalice and the reception of Holy Communion on the

tongue.

Please let us be one another's keepers by being charitable

in this sense. Thank you.
