didn’t I get started in the winter?” Then come join us now so you’re ready for the summer months ahead. How? PiYO! What is PiYO? PiYo is Pilates +

Yoga + Nonstop Movement.

You sweat, stretch, and strengthen, all in one class!

It combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility benefits of yoga.

Because you’re always in motion, you’re burning crazy calories.

There are no weights or jumps. You use your body weight.

It’s low impact, high intensity.

It’s restorative, empowering, and set to uplifting music.

It’s a way for you to begin to seek out a healthier YOU and maybe even incorporate some lifestyle changes while having fun!

St. John’s Securing Each Child’s Future

Jeremiah 29:11

National Lutheran Schools Week St. John’s Lutheran School would like to thank the congregation for their continued support. Dur-ing Lutheran Schools Week, the students spent time learning that no matter what we do or what goes on in our lives, it’s still all about Je-sus. The students had opportunities to hear how God’s message is translat-ed into different cultures, make blessing bags for the homeless, keep our bod-ies that God gave us safe and active, and much more.

Introducing New Achievement Testing We are excited to an-nounce that St. John’s Lutheran School will be switching to NWEA MAP testing this school year. This will be in place of the traditional paper/pencil achieve-ment tests that the school has taken in past years. MAP Growth tests are taken on the com-puter instead of paper/ pencil. MAP Growth tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. If the student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they an-

swer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Since MAP Growth tests provide immedi-ate and accurate infor-mation about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly. We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth

and achievement!

Geography Bee & Spelling Bee Students in fourth through eighth grades had the opportunity to compete in the National Geography Bee in Janu-ary. Two students from the listed grade levels advance to compete against each other for a school winner. We had a battle of two pairs of sisters in the competi-tion. Congratulations to Aramie Lyte who won for our school. Aramie com-peted in the national competition through an online test. Students in first through eighth grades competed to be in the South Subur-ban Regional Spelling Bee. This event is made up of St. John’s Lutheran and five other area Lu-theran Schools. The re-gional competition takes place Saturday, February 24th at St. John’s Luther-an in Lansing. Best of luck to our students!

Vikings Court The boys’ basketball sea-son has recently end-ed. The junior varsity team was at the top of the conference this year. The varsity team had an up and down season, but they played strong every game and had good results in the tournaments they were in. The girls’ basket-ball season has just be-gun. Come out and sup-port the Lady Vikings! Plans are in the works to have a Boys’ Volleyball Team this year. A Parents meeting for the Track sea-son will take place on Wednesday, February 28th at 6:30 PM.

Bright Start change A change in Illinois law as of January 1, 2018, states that money placed in the Bright Start program can be used for “expenses for tuition in connection with enrollment or attendance at an elementary or sec-ondary public, private, or religious school.” This means that people who contribute to your child’s Bright Start program can get a tax deduction for that contribution and the money can be used for tuition payments. Former-ly the money could only be used for college expenses.

Is it a cold or the flu?

Copied from the CDC Website

Recovery from the flu usually takes a few days to less than two (2) weeks. Sometimes, the flu can lead to pneumonia, especially in the elderly, very young, or those with illnesses such as Asthma /Heart disease, Sickle Cell Disease, Kidney or Liver disease, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, COPD or Extreme obesity. To help prevent the flu, the most important thing to do is get the flu vaccine each year, per the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). It is not too late to get a flu shot for this year. Check with your doc-tor or pharmacy. The flu is widespread across 42 states, up from 39 states two (2) weeks ago, so it would be better to be safe and get the vaccine. The entire state of IL has reported flu illnesses. The next important thing to do to help prevent the flu is to try to stay away from ill people. Also cover coughs and sneezes and teach young ones to do the same. The easiest thing to do is hand washing any time you touch any surfaces where there may be germs. If you do get the flu, stay home and rest so you don’t get exposed to other illnesses and so you don’t infect others. If you have the above-named illnesses or become very ill with the flu, see your physician. There are antiviral medications that can be given that can help prevent other illnesses and help you get better faster.

Until next month, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you…” III John 1:2.
