Never tire of praying for priests, especially now when it seems that all theforces of evil have been loosed upon the world, attacking particularly thesacred ministers of the Lord. Pray that they remain faithful, that they beholy, that they be nothing more (and nothing less) than what they should be: Alter Christus. Please pray for the Missionary Servants of the Poor ofthe Third World priests and deacons!

review of our lives in light of theGospel teachings. The mass mediais tireless in reporting the sad newsabout the economic crisis and, evenworse, about murders, abortions, divorces, broken families, etc. Allthis news could discourage us, butwe, raising our eyes to heaven, dis-cover the face of God the Father,

woods shine in their ever-growingvigor, the love of those that vie inhelping His chosen, the poor, shines
silently before the eyes of God. During my last trip to Europe,an old lady, conscious of the wors-ening economic crisis which espe-cially tries the poor, gave me a kiloof her jewels to sell tohelp our children. Herhusband, who turned81 this past November,
despite deserving a restafter a long life of workand sacrifice, continuesworking to be able tohelp our children andthe poor who surroundus. He knows that ifhe doesn’t work, our
children would be leftwithout bread. Havingno children of his own,
he has even gotten hisnieces and nephews tocommit to this noblecause. In Spain, wherethe crisis is most felt,a woman who, withoutknowing us person-ally or even contactingus for more informa-tion, left us her humblehouse in her will so that
the sale of it might sat-isfy the hunger of ourchildren. How these demon-strations of true Chris-tian charity move all
of us and the poor we help! Theyhelp us to forget the offenses madeagainst the dignity of the poor byhollow charitable works moti-vated only by pride and blindness,by hearts incapable of seeing inthe poor a child of God in special

circumstances. How many of theseoffenses I could tell of! For example,a very rich Catholic woman fromLima used to send us her daughters’used dresses and high heel shoes.I asked her not to bring this sort ofthing anymore because the poor areour brothers and should be assisted
with dignity. A very wealthy oldItalian woman had begun to sendus generous donations for our chil-dren, saying, “I am old, my childrenare well off, so now I would like to
help your children a little more.”But one of her daughters, a leaderin her parish and owner of build-ings, prevented her from helpingin this generous way, saying, “Helpthem, but only send them 100€every once in a while.” Not everyone who says to me,
“Lord, Lord,” shall enter the king-dom of heaven (Mt 7:21). I wish all of you a Holy Lent, asa competition of love! Your little missionary brother,

“Be perfect, like your Father in
heaven is perfect.” (Mt 5:48)
Part Two:
Means of Advancing in Perfection
The principal obstacle to ad-vancing in perfection is in the luke-warmness of the soul about whosecharacteristics and remedies we
have spoken in a previous article. Ifit is true that it is difficult for a luke-warm person to regain his previousfervor, the Lord says, “What is im-possible with men is possible withGod” (Lk 18:27). He who prays tothe Lord and uses adequate meanssoon attains what he desires. SaintAlphonsus Liguori, in the eighth
chapter of his book, The Practice ofthe Love of Jesus Christ , suggestsfive ways of conquering lukewarm-ness and reaching perfection: desir-ing perfection, the firm resolutionof reaching it, meditation, frequentcommunion, and prayer. In the first place is desire for per-
fection. Saint Alphonsus says that“the desire for holiness gives us thewings that make us fly above theearth. It gives us strength and allowsus to walk the path of holiness.” Onlyhe who truly desires to reach perfec-tion goes continually forward. Thosewho don’t desire this will backslide.Saint Teresa of Jesus said that “it
helps to have lofty thoughts that im-pel us to also do the works (The Wayof Perfection, Ch. 5). Another place
she says, “The devil does much
harm, so that those who pray don’tprogress, making them misunder-stand humility, making them thinkit prideful to have great desires andto want to imitate the Saints” (Auto-biography, Ch. 13). And to discour-age us, he makes us think on ourpast sins. One must realize that not
even the sins we’ve committed canprevent us from reaching sanctityif we really want it. “In everythingGod works for good with thosewho love Him” (Rm 8:28), so thateven sins can help, because the sin-ner, being aware of them, becomesmore humble. The second way of reaching per-
fection is resolution: the firm deci-sion of giving oneself completely toGod. If the desire for perfection is

not united with this firm resolutionof reaching it, it will never be any-thing but a vain desire. The lazy arefull of good intentions but never re-solve to take the steps to carry themout. For this reason we say, “Theroad to hell is paved with good in-tentions.” On the contrary, “the soul
on this path . . . begins to walk withdetermination . . . and has covered agreat deal of the way (Saint Teresaof Jesus, Autobiography, Ch. 11). The third way of reaching per-fection is meditation. He whodoesn’t meditate on the eternaltruths will only be able to live aChristian life through an extraor-
dinary grace of God. The truthsof the faith are only seen with theeyes of the soul and only when the
soul meditates on them. So he whodoesn’t meditate doesn’t see them, walks in darkness, and becomesattached to earthly things, scorn-ing eternal ones. Holy thoughts areborn of meditation, they increasethe desire for perfection and pourinto the heart firm intentions of
surrendering oneself completely toGod. It is very useful to meditate onthe Four Last Things (Death, Judg-ment, Heaven and Hell), and on thelife of the Redeemer as The Imi-tation of Christ reminds us, “Mayour greatest preoccupation be tomeditate on the life of Jesus. Histeaching surpasses all those of the
Saints” (Book 1, Ch. 1, 1). The fourth means of reachingholiness and preserving friendship

with God is by frequent commu-nion. The Eucharist not only frees usfrom daily faults, even from simpleimperfections or venial sins, but italso preserves us from mortal sin. Itinclines the soul to virtue and infus-es it with a great ability to practiceit. Clearly, for Holy Communion toproduce in the soul these effects, the attitude with which a person ap-proaches the Eucharistic Banquet isvery important. One must dedicate
a good amount of time to thanks-giving since “the time after Com-munion is time to make a fortuneand accumulate a treasure of gracesfor Heaven” (Saint John of Avila). Finally, on this road to perfec-tion it is necessary to pray in a per-sonal and intimate dialogue withGod. Because the help of grace is
indispensible on one hand, but onthe other hand God only grants it tothose who ask for it. “The Lord . . .bestows His riches upon all whocall upon Him” (Rm 10:12). Astemptations and dangers in this lifeare never ending, our prayer mustbe continuous. Our Lord has saidto, “always pray and not lose heart”(Lk 18:1). When we pray to God, letus not forget to commend ourselvesto Mary also who is the dispenser
of all graces. “God it is,” says SaintBernard, “Who gives grace, but Hegives it by the hand of Mary. Let usseek grace, but let us seek it throughMary.” If Mary prays for us, wemay be sure of being heard becauseher prayers are always pleasing toGod and are never neglected.

OREMUS
Prayer to Our Lady of Inca Perka,
Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Poor
(Part One)
Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of all nations and Motherof the poor: I have climbed to this peak of Inca Perka, witnessto bloody battles between the strong Chancas and the ancientIncas for the control of this High Cordillera, to raise to youmy imploring gaze. Listen to my reverent prayer which risesto heaven like the condors that dance about you in their silentflight. After so many years of humble service on these heights ofApurimac, where numberless Indians don’t yet know the fruitsof the Redemption of your Son and live an inhuman existence,
I can’t find the words to form the prayer that presses on mysoul to express to you the sentiments of my missionary heart. I feel in the deepest part of my being my weakness andnothingness. I am aware of my radical inability to free thehearts hardened in evil and turn them towards good. So I liftthe chalice with the Blood of your son, Jesus, to you in whichI want to drown the sufferings of all the Indians whom fromthis old fortress you see and support with a mother’s love. You know, Mother, how these Indians of the Cordillera are
exploited. You know the local authorities and the bosses whorob the poor of their cows, sheep and lambs and who can onlycry because if they denounce the abuses, they will end up in
jail. You have seen in the darkness of the night, who killed theyoung district attorney, throwing his body in the river, becausehe defended the Indians.

“I Know Whom I Have Believed”
(2Tm 1:12)
I want to share with you aboutmy life and especially about my vo-cation. I was born in Lima. Yes! Iam from the land of Saint Rose ofLima and Saint Martin de Porres,
although my father is from Callaoand my mother from Cuzco. Afterbeing ordained to the diaconate thispast December 12th, I am minister-ing at the City of Boys in Anda-huaylillas, Cuzco. First, how was my vocation tothe priesthood born? I can answerthis question in the same words that
Pope John Paul II used in his book,Gift and Mystery, “God knows mypriestly vocation better than any-
one,” and “every priestly vocationis a great mystery, it is a gift thatinfinitely surpasses man. . .” Sin-cerely, I feel like that: infinitelysurpassed by this beautiful gift thatthe Lord has given me with His callsince, as you know, the responsibil-
ity of a priest especially nowadaysis very great and I tremble like SaintPaul (cf. 1Cor 2:3) when I think ofit. However, the words of that sameApostle to the Gentiles helped me toovercome my fears, “I know WhomI have believed” (2Tm 1:12). Now how was I introduced tothe Movement of the Missionary
Servants of the Poor of the ThirdWorld? I met them through a goodfriend of my mother. She beganto attend the spiritual retreats thatFr. Giovanni and the Movementorganized periodically in Lima.My mother always brought homepamphlets and newsletters that
contained testimonies of youngmissionaries and many photos ofchildren that lived in precarious cir-cumstances in the mountains of theAndes and also messages from Fr.Giovanni exhorting young peopleto be courageous and determined infollowing Christ. It’s curious that until then my
life had been “normal” to the pointthat I was about to realize my dreamof being a sports writer. However, I

wasn’t at peace. Every time I readone of those testimonies or saw aphoto of those children that livedin inhuman conditions in the moun-tains or on the outskirts of Cuzcoitself, my heart was moved. I felt Ineeded to do something for them.I felt as if a voice was calling me
to leave everything, my family, myfriends, my profession, my comfort,my city, my personal plans, etc. Inshort, I felt the call of Christ in thedepths of my heart, but it was verydifficult to leave everything. It tooka lot to take this decisive step. Finally, I remember praying adaily ejaculation that a priest friend
in Lima taught me: “Speak, Lord:what do you want of me?” I mustadmit that my parents helped me
much during this period of discern-ment. I prayed a daily rosary withthem and the Divine Mercy chaplet.
Without a doubt the example and
Christian witness that I have re-
ceived from my parents was decisive
in confirming me in my vocation. So it was that, impelled by the
Lord, I finally took the step. I wroteto the superior of the community inCuzco, telling him about my doubtsand my desire to serve Christ in thepoor. I was accepted. So I went toCuzco and began my missionarylife there. I received many bless-ings and gifts from the Lord duringthat time.
In daily contact with the chil-dren, I was discovering slowly thesuffering face of Christ, since many

of them came from homes damagedby alcohol and family violence orwere simply children that had beenabandoned by their own parents. Many times I have cried, remem-bering some particular testimony ofone of our boys, and have thankedGod for the privilege He’s givenme of being able to serve Him andconsole Him in them each day as aServant of the Poor. In this continu-ous service to the smallest I have
understood the words of Our LordWho says, “What you have done tothe least of my brothers, you did toMe” (Mt 25:40). I have always feltthat Christ used these dear boys tocall me to His service and to tell meto leave all for Him.
Now I am working in the Cityof Boys with the dream and desireof serving Christ in these children,in the poorest, a dream and desirethat, thanks to God, has remainedas strong as it was at the beginningof my missionary experience. I ask the Lord for the gift ofremaining faithful in all I havelearned and found worthy in theseyears in seminary: prayer, love forthe Eucharist, and community life.
And I beg you who read these linesto pray for me so that I may remainfaithful to the vocation Christ hascalled me to and that He may turnme into an instrument of His loveand a Servant of the most poor andneedy. Holy Mary, Mother of thePoor, pray for us.

Blessed Chiara Badano, or Chiara“Luce” (Light), a name given to her bythe founder of the Focolare Movement,Chiara Lubich, was born at the endof 1989 in Sassello, Luguria, Italy onOctober 29, 1971. From childhood shedisplayed a deep love of God. She joined the Focolare Movementat the age of nine. She was a generous,
happy, sports-loving girl who enjoyed life. She liked to sing and dance. At sixteen she dreamed of becoming a stewardess but realized that Godwas calling her to something more and she responded generously, puttingaside her plans to embrace a new dream, that of consecrating herself to theLord. But the ways of the Lord are not our ways. One day, while playing tennis, she experienced strong pain in her back. The doctors at the hospital diagnosed a serious and painful tumor. Thusbegan a two year Calvary for Chiara, which she endured with the joy andgenerosity that were always hers. She was determined to suffer it all for
Jesus. The consecration that the Lord asked of her was a consecration tosuffering to give witness to the whole world that suffering may not only beendured but also embraced, thereby uniting oneself to the Cross of Jesus. That which could have been common holiness, hidden, like the many saintswhose names we don’t even know, is transformed into a heroic holiness. Each year on October 29th the Church celebrates an example of youth-ful and cheerful holiness, a “Light” to Christians so that they may cheer-fully embrace their daily crosses knowing that, as Saint José María Escrivásaid, “God wants us happy, but Christian happiness frequently has its roots
in the Cross.” The sufferings of the children we shelter in our centers are sometimesphysical sufferings, as in the case of the children helped by our Sistersin the Saint Raphael room of our Saint Teresa of Jesus Home, but morefrequently it is tremendous suffering caused by their abandonment andthe violence they’ve suffered. This can plant in their hearts a rancor andresentment towards others, towards adults in general, and even towardstheir own parents. The life of Chiara, beatified by Benedict XVI, may bealso for them that Light that they so need to transform each suffering into
a gesture of love towards God and their neighbor.

Fr. Giovanni received permis-sion from the Archbishop of Buda-pest, His Eminence Peter CardinalErdo, during his last visit to ourCenter to have the Most Holy Eu-charist reserved permanently in our

the Center was used for praying therosary and catechism. We are verygrateful for this permission whichwill help us all to live in our Centerin the Presence of Jesus. Our Centerhas also been enlarged with a newroom to use for sports programs for

ing village of our seminary. EverySunday our seminarians go to bothparishes to teach catechism andserve at the altar. The blessing of thenew wing of the Seminary brings toan end the expansion of our house ofpriestly and missionary formation.
We can now receive large groupsof young men for spiritual Ignatianretreats preached by our priests. Atthe beginning of November we re-ceived the minor seminarians of thediocese for the annual week-longspiritual exercises.

the boys of our school who aspireto the priestly and missionary life. The Rector, Father Vincent Min-nelli, msp, and his assistant, FatherAlois Höllwerth, msp, will receiveseven new candidates this March to
experience a week of communitylife which will allow them to dis-cern a priestly vocation. There willthen be about twenty boys studyingin our minor seminary. For the fourth year in a rowthe minor seminarians put on aChristmas play titled And He Dwelt
Among Us. It is a play about theglad preparation for Christmaswith some comedy and reflection in
which contemporary characters andtraditional Cuzqueños are broughtfrom their very superficial andsinful life to the feet of the new-born Baby Jesus. Each year FatherVincent prepares three performanc-
es for the city of Cuzco, the last oneof which is performed at the munic-ipal theater with about six hundredpeople attending.

Ugarte, Archbishop of Cuzco. TheMass was sung by our San Tarcisiochoir, directed by Pascal Dousse, msp, of the Fraternity of the Mis-sionary Families. The parents andfamily of Brother Raúl came fromLima for the ordination. The boysfrom our Francisco and Jacinta Mar-to school also attended. Father Raúlwill continue to be responsible for
the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga groupof boys, the youngest of those who
live with us. A little before Christmas, wetook in two new boys, Cristo Frank(6) who comes from Quillabambaand Luis Miguel (10) who comesfrom Cusibamba where our Sistershave a permanent mission. This yearour San Tarcisio home houses forty
abandoned or orphaned boys divid-ed into groups according to age andall guided by a Father or Brother.
One of the important duties of theDirector, Father Agustin Delouv-roy, is to make sure that we main-tain contact with the families whohave given their boys to us. Thanksto the help of the missionary fami-lies who visit the families of ourboys, we are able to help them ma-terially and spiritually. Frequently,it is only to maintain a simple and
humble contact sothat their situation
doesn’t get worse. We are unable tocarry out great so-cial works in com-petition with themunicipal servicesof Cuzco, but thereis no doubt that thehumble presenceof the missionaryChurch among thepoor gives greathope to many ofthem.

and two minor seminarians went toParocochan. If it hadn’t been for these itin-erant missionaries, these puebloswould not have been able to partici-pate in Mass and celebrate Christ-
mas in a Christian way. Each mis-sionary team spent a week in theassigned pueblos from which theyalso visited neighboring villages toteach catechism, bless houses, hearconfessions, pray the rosary and
distribute rosariesand, time allowing, the presentationof a living Nativ-ity and a Christmasperformance with
the children of thepueblo, all so thatthese people couldreceive the newsof what the Churchcelebrates: the birthof the Savior. Otherpriests went to theSisters’ permanentmissions in Cusib-amba and Puna-cancha.

From The World
There are 800 million illiterate people in the world,
including more than 70 million children
The Pope remembers the singular contribution
of all religious men and women, contemplative and
active, to the mission of the Church and its
chief role in evangelization:
“On September 8, 2011, the day we celebrate the International Dayof Literacy, we want to remind society in general and governmentsand their related educational institutions in particular, that there areabout 800 million illiterate people in the world of which more than
70 million are children according to a report issued by UNESCO in2010. Achieving universal literacy requires more effort and politi-cal will, because it is not only a matter of assuring an education foreveryone, but also of giving them a tool to fight poverty and guaran-tee inclusion and social mobility, the eradication of child labor andthe exploitation of children.”
(Agencia Fides, July 9, 2011)
“Due to the singular contribution of all the religious men and women, contemplative and active, to the mission of the Church and their roleas chief evangelizers through prayer and supplication, education, health assistance, charity and other apostolates, their charisms willcontinue strengthening the ecclesial community overall and enrich-ing all of society.” The Holy Father Benedict XVI emphasized thisin a talk to a group of Latin Rite bishops from India who were re-
ceived in audience on June 17 for their ad limina visit.(Cf. Agencia Fides, June 18, 2011)

Our Friends Write To Us

Two French Friends, on a tripto the Temple of the Sun,
write to us:
Our goal on May 9, 2011, wasto discover that beautiful countryof Peru, land of dreams and alsowhere the work of the MissionaryServants of the Poor of the ThirdWorld is carried out. We had metthem and helped them through theAbbey of Notre-Dame de Font-gombault. We stayed ten days, mostly inCuzco, and dedicated an entire dayto visiting the works, which up tothen we had known only throughtheir newsletter published by theabbey. A day was too short to beable to see and learn everything,
notwithstanding the warm wel-come of the French families whowere put at our disposal so that wecould see as much as possible. That morning we were metby Philippe Bourdeau (one ofthe husbands of the missionaryfamilies) who took us to the City
of Boys in Andahuaylillas to seethe Blessed Francisco and JacintaMarto school and professional

workshops which serve about 500boys. It was the day on which re-
port cards were distributed in thepresence of the boys’ parents. Thisended with a Mass celebrated byFather Urs Zanoni who impressedus with his beautiful and simpleliturgy and the deep recollectionof the boys surrounded by theirparents who came from neigh-boring villages or the outskirts ofCuzco. At noon we returned to Cuzcoto the Saint Maria Goretti GirlsSchool to lunch with the studentsand appreciated the serene atmo-sphere and liveliness of the girls. Our day ended with a visitto the Mother House of the mis-
sionary sisters which houses theSaint Teresa of Jesus Home. Thiswas very moving, visiting therooms of the little sick ones whichFather Salerno considers thesecond tabernacle of the houseafter the tabernacle in the church. These handicapped children, most
of whom are bedridden and manyabandoned by their parents, vivid-ly represent the Suffering Christ.

Surrounded by young, smiling re-ligious who radiate a great faith, these children find an atmosphere
of peace and love and dignitywhich we would like to find in ourhospitals in France, which are sooften dehumanizing. Another moving moment wason our last Sunday in Cuzco, onthe Feast of the Ascension, whenwe requested a taxi from a youngemployee of the Llipimpac Innwhere we were staying so wecould go to Mass at the MotherHouse. When we asked her if she
knew the work of the Servantsshe answered us excitedly thatshe had spent 18 years there! She
said that she was very grateful toits benefactors and to the mission-ary families for contributing to amission that had saved her from avery difficult situation. What a meaningful sign in thiscrowded city of Cuzco! And whata witness for those who might stilldoubt the importance of this mostdecidedly Catholic work dedi-cated to the service of the mostpoor!
