•Floating SystemThe floating system is used to control the focus. This system moves thedifferent lens groups in the opticalsystem to different positions, therebyminimizing the telescoping distanceand the fluctuation of aberration atdifferent shooting distances. Thissystem is particularly effective formacro lenses (which encompass a widerange of shooting distances) and wide-angle lenses (for Single-Lens Reflexcameras) whose lens composition isasymmetric. SIGMA uses the floatingsystem for the MACRO 50 mm f/2.8EX DG lens and the large-aperturewide-angle 28 mm f/1.8 EX DGASPHERICAL MACRO lenses.

•DF (Dual Focus) SystemThe DF (Dual Focus) system disengages the linkage between the internalfocusing mechanism and outer focusing ring when the focusing ring ismoved to the AF position. This system provides easy and precisehandling of the lens, since the focusing ring does not rotate duringautofocusing. The wide focusing ring also enables easy and accuratemanual focusing.

•OS (Optical Stabilizer) FunctionDeveloped with Sigma’s own technology, the OS (Optical Stabilizer) function usestwo sensors inside the lens to detect bothvertical and horizontal movement of thecamera. This function, which works bymoving an optical image stabilizing lensgroup, to effectively compensate forcamera shake, helps to set our lensesapart from the rest. To handle all typesof shooting conditions, the system hastwo optical stabilizer modes. Mode 1determines camera shake in vertical andhorizontal panning and compensates forimage blurring. It is therefore effectivefor taking general photography or forshooting landscapes and other staticsubjects. Mode 2 detects vertical camerashake and compensates for blurring. It iseffective for panning the camera tophotograph moving subjects such as motor sports.

PRINCIPLES OF THE LENS

•Angle of ViewThe focal length determines the area in which objects can be reproduced onthe image sensor surface. The angle of view is the area that the lens canphotograph and is expressed in degrees. The angle of view indicated in thebrochure is the angle relative to the diagonal line of 36 mm x 24 mm and20.7 mm x 13.8 mm frames. As the focal length becomes larger, the fieldangle becomes smaller and the image larger.

•f Value (f-Number; f-Stop)The aperture settings of a lens are called f-numbers or f-stops. An f-numberrepresents a ratio between lens focal length and the effective diameter of a givenaperture. Because it is related to focal length, the f-number is also called therelative aperture. The f-number equals the focal length of the lens divided by theentrance pupil of the aperture. Aperture settings are marked so that eachposition changes the amount of light passing through the lens by a factor of 2:the light is either doubled, or reduced by one-half. That is, a high numberrepresents a smaller aperture, one that stops twice as much light as the previousaperture. Conversely, a lower number represents a larger aperture, one thatincreases light twice as much as thepervious number. The speed of a lens is thef-number of its maximum effective diameter— i.e., when the aperture is wide open.

•Depth of FieldWhen you focus on an object, a certain areain front of and behind the object is also infocus; depth of field refers to the size of thisarea that is in focus. The depth of field orthe range of focus becomes larger when youstop down (decrease the size of theaperture), or smaller when you open up(increase the size of the aperture). Thedepth of field is smaller at smaller shootingdistances even when the aperture sizeremains unchanged, and is larger at largershooting distances. The depth of field is alsodependent on the focal length of the lens; itis larger for lenses of smaller focal lengthsor wider angles, and smaller for lenses of larger focal lengths or telephotolenses, if aperture and the distance camera to subject remain the same.

•PerspectiveDepending on the focal length of the lens, the background appears close to orfurther away from the object. This visual effect is called perspective. With awide-angle lens the background will appear remote, and the distance from thesubject to the background will be emphasized; when the focal length of atelephoto lens is large, the background will appear to be closer to the object. Totake advantage of this effect, use a wide-angle lens to capture both thebackground and the object, and a telephoto lens to emphasize only the object.

LENS TECHNOLOGY

•Aspherical LensThis lens provides high optical performance while maintaining a compactsize. For example, the 12-24 mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL lenswidens the range of wide-angle lenses, and it provides distortion-freeimages with image reproduction performance equivalent to that of a single-focal length lens. Aspherical lenses allow the production of high-qualityimages from compact, lightweight telephoto zoom lenses.

APO (APO Lens)SIGMA’s APO zoom lenses minimize color aberration. As the refractiveindex of glass depends on thewavelength of light, color aberrationoccurs when different colors formimages at different points. Thisproblem often occurs with telephotolenses, but the Special Low-Dispersion (SLD) glass andExtraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD)used in SIGMA’s APO lenses helps tocompensate for color aberration, thereby allowing them to produce ofsharp images.

•APO MACRO SuperAlthough telephoto zoom lensescan be used closer to the objectthan fixed focal length telephotolenses, there is still a minimumshooting distance. SIGMA hasmade this minimum distancesmaller and developed the zoom MACRO lens for taking close-upphotographs of the same quality as those taken with a regular MACROlens, while maintaining theperformance specific to an APO lens.Rather than carrying around thecumbersome accessories required forclose-up work, the photographer cannow take photographs at amagnification of 1:2 (one half lifesize)

using a telephoto lens, by quickly shifting from the normal setting tothe full macro setting.

•Tele-macro mechanismSIGMA’s tele-macro mechanism lets you select a magnification of up to 1:2 atthe telephoto end simply by engaging a switch. With a minimum shootingdistance of 19.7 inches (50 cm) over the entire zoom range, activating theMacro switch at the telephoto end allowsthe focus ring to enter the macro range, allowing close-up photography. Sinceclose-up photography with amagnification of up to 1:2 is possiblewithout attaching a close-up lens orchanging to a macro lens, thismechanism gives you extra versatility in photography. When the Macroswitch is engaged, the zoom control ring is fixed at the telephoto end.

•Inner and Rear FocusConventional focusing has normally been performed by moving either alllens groups as a fixed unit or only the first lens group. AF cameras are nowwidely used, even for close-upphotography. Consequently, demandhas arisen for a focusing system thatwill keep the length of the lensunchanged while showing littlefluctuation of aberration. In response tothis demand, SIGMA has developed anew inner focus system that moves twolens groups inside the telephoto andtelephoto MACRO lenses. This systemhas floating elements that substantiallyimprove the close-up capability of thelens. The super wide angle lens havinga large front-lens uses a rear focusingsystem to move the rear-lens apparatusand enhance the floating effect, and the18 -125 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC lens uses aninner focusing system to move thesecondary lens apparatus. SIGMA hasalso succeeded in attaining a minimumshooting distance of 19.7 inches/0.5 m
