FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2019 | TERM 3 | WEEK 7

Principal’s Message Another 2 weeks have flown by, with lots of great things happening in our school! Thank you to our wonderful and supportive P&C who ran a very successful Father’s Day stall last week. It was wonderful to hear all the excited voices as the children carefully decided on their purchases. We hope all of the Dads had a great Father’s Day last Sunday. Just so you are aware there are a few staff changes at present. Mr Reg Barber is joining us as our STEM teacher and will be here for the remainder of the year. We welcome him to our school and thank Miss Sewell for her work here over the last few weeks. Ms Susan Doughty our school counsellor is relieving in another position until the end of the year, so Ms Pagan West will be relieving in this position. Miss Cupitt is currently on leave and is being replaced by Mr Blair until the end of the term. Mrs Thomas will begin her leave next week and she will be replaced by Mrs Hoile until the end of the term. Mrs Blair is also on leave and is being replaced by Mrs Preston until the end of the term. Mrs Cork will take leave for the last two weeks of term and will be replaced by Miss Sewell. Year 3 had a great excursion to Midginbil Hill on Tuesday and certainly had a beautiful day and I understand that you all had an enjoyable day and learnt lots of great skills. We were contacted by the staff at the camp as they wanted to let me know how great you all were on Tuesday. That was very pleasing to hear and they would love to have you back at the camp at any time. Well done everyone! Stage 3 will be leaving on Monday to travel to Lake Keepit, we hope you have a fantastic time and enjoy the experience. Well done to all of the students who travelled to the Opera House this week, I understand that you all sounded amazing and were great ambassadors for our school. Well done! Enrolments If you have a child that will be enrolling for Kindergarten next year we need all enrolment forms returned to the office by the end of this term. Orientation starts Tuesday 29 October in Term 4. If you are aware that you will be leaving our school at the end of the year please notify the office as soon as possible. Child Safety We would like to advise you there was a report to police earlier in the week regarding someone following a child to school in their car at Woodburn. We have had no such incidents here, however children were spoken to again about Stranger Danger and we would like you to do the same at home. Another reminder there is no direct supervision of children at school prior to 9am. Children are not to be at school before this time, unless they are enrolled in Before and After School Care. In addition please ensure your children know how they are getting home in the afternoon, as lately we have had several children unsure and they have then missed buses. Also it is timely to remind your children to always go straight home unless they have permission to go elsewhere.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey We would love you all to complete our survey – we promise it won’t take long. By completing this survey it helps us with future planning and also to improve in areas you may identify. The survey is also completely anonymous. The link is: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/9rnvp More information on page 5 and 6. Have a great weekend, Deb Langfield Principal Education Week Awards I had the pleasure of attending the Education Week Awards in Lismore last Thursday afternoon. Congratulations to all award recipients. We thank you enormously for the contributions you make to our school! Week 5 Student of the Week – Audrey P Audrey is unconditionally kind, thoughtful and generous. She applies her best effort in all that she does, taking pride and care in her work. She respects our school Key Values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity and brings light to 2N everyday with her smile and positivity. Well done Audrey. Congratulations Audrey! Week 6 Student of the Week – Sophia B Sophia is a friendly and kind student who always upholds our Three Key Values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. She always displays these in class, at the Library and in the playground. Sophia always approaches new learning with a positive attitude and works hard to improve in all areas of learning. She thoroughly enjoys reading loads of book and was super excited about the Book Parade. When working with others she shows a great capacity to be collaborative and these qualities are what have contributed towards her being Student of the Week. Great work Sophia! Three Key Values in Action – Dolphin Slips Dolphin Slips are given to students for demonstrating the Three Key Values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. Draws are made each week from the Dolphin Slip box. Each student receives a canteen voucher. Raif B Phoenix E Bodhi H Eva S Fruit & veg superpower your meals! Superpower your family meals by including more fruit and veg:

Make sure you include fruit or vegetables at every meal. The more meals that contain fruit and vegetables, the more fruit and vegetables your family will eat!

Up the veg in an instant in your family dinner faves – add a can of legumes (e.g. chickpeas, lentils, cannellini beans, borlotti beans or kidney beans) and some frozen cut up vegetables. Sorted!

Time poor at meal times? Prepare vegetables in advance or use frozen or canned vegetables (no added salt)

No fresh fruit in the house? Have canned fruit in natural juice on standby for breakfasts or after dinner treats with yoghurt or custard

For more ideas check out the recipes on the Fruit & Veg Month 2019 Recipes webpage.

FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2019 | TERM 3 | WEEK 7

Sports News Cricket On Tuesday we had some Sydney Sixers visit our school. They played some games of cricket with the students and also helped some Kinder and Stage Three with their skills.

Library News Museum in a Box A penguin display has arrived from the Australia Museum enabling students to have a close up look at these fascinating birds. Storyboard Bus Students in Years Three to Six again got to enjoy a presentation from visiting author Tristan Bancks. He then did an intensive creative writing workshop with thirty students from Stage Three. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students and they were very engaged with the activity. Visiting Author Illustrator On Friday 13 September students from Years One to Four will be lucky enough to meet Jules Faber. He has illustrated the ‘Weirdo’ books and his new book ‘The Quest Diaries of Max Crack’. Order forms will go home next week if your child wishes to purchase a book on the day. Overdue Notes As we draw closer to the end of the term could you please check with your child if they have any overdue books and return them before the holidays, thank you. Writing Workshops Byron Writers Festival’s free creative writing program for young writers (aged 10 to 18) StoryBoard, has been facilitating free workshops in the Lismore Library since 2016 with Professional Author, Jesse Blackadder and other guest authors and illustrators. Due to popular demand, the free StoryBoard fortnightly masterclasses at Lismore Library has expanded to include a dedicated group for younger writers aged 8+ with Professional Author, Zanni Louise! These classes are free of charge. Where: Lismore Library When: Thursdays 5pm to 6.30pm For Who: Primary Students 8+ on Level 1 with Zanni Louise and High School students Level 2 with Jesse Blackadder Fruit & veg superpower your snacks! Did you know only about 5% of NSW children eat enough vegetables? And the statistics are similar for adults. Our school has registered for Fruit & Veg Month – a fun and educational health promotion event that puts a positive focus on fruit and vegetables. To encourage our school families to eat more fruit and vegetables we will be sending home hints and tips over the month. Superpower your family snacks by including more fruit and veg:

Put out of plate of chopped fruit and/or vegetables with every snack. You’ll be amazed at how much more fruit and veg your kids will eat if it is accessible and ready to eat…now!

Hot day? Freeze up some pineapple slices or grapes to cool the kids down. Cold day? Make up some tomato and cheese or mushroom and baked bean toasties to warm them up!

Cook up some heavy-on-the-fruit-or-veg muffins and fritters for lunchbox snacks. Most recipes can be prepared in bulk and frozen until needed
