LENNEL KIRK YARD

INVENTORY No. 2 OF THE OLD PART BESIDE THE OLD LENNEL KIRK

(This is the part of the KY between the middle path and exit gate and the wall overlooking the modern part of the KY. In the middle of this part of the KY are the ruins of Lennel Kirk which was last used in 1705. It is now a Listed B Building and the subject of a project to stabilise it by the Society).

Guidance Notes

This inventory is based on the Cargill/Prentice/Purves inventory of 1970 and updated in 2010/11 by Trevor Swan, Gerald Tait, William Murray and John Elliot of the Coldstream and District Local History Society. Explanations as to the background of Cargill, Prentice and Purves can be found at the start of inventory no.1.

The inventory commences from the east wall, starting at the northern roadside and working in rows towards the riverside. NB – it cannot be guaranteed that all the headstones are in the correct order as some rows are in zig-zag. However, they are all in the stated rows as viewed by the project team.

During late 2010, there was a landslide which caused disruption to graves overlooking the River Tweed. For health and safety reasons, the authorities installed a temporary fence, which was in place most of early and mid 2011. The stabilisation of the headstones was completed in spring 2011. Readers will see reference to this fence in each row below and the reference will be deleted once the fence is taken down, which may be early 2012.

Where a headstone is prefixed by Cargill and is listed in rows below, it has

been taken from the Cargill, Prentice and Purves survey of 1970 and witnessed on site by Swan/Tait/Murray/Elliot in 2010/11.

Where a headstone is prefixed with (Swan) it is because the headstone has been witnessed in 2010/11 by Swan/Tait/Murray/Elliot but was not listed in the Cargill 1970 survey. There are no explanations why these were omitted.

We have three special categories of this inventory:-

One is listed at the rear for headstones listed in the Cargill/Prentice/Purves survey but not witnessed in the KY during the 2010/11 survey. It is presumed they have been removed; and

The other is a survey of small headstones by Mrs.Collin of Chirnside included in various parts of the list.

Finally, there is an account at the rear of headstones identified by Robson (1895) and Craw (1926) but which cannot be traced in 2010/11.

Below some headstone inscriptions, are notes about the persons mentioned, where they lived, what they did for a living etc. This research is ongoing, and of course may be a journey not a destination.

This survey has to be viewed in the context of a few associated matters:-

1. the stabilisation and tidying of Lennel Kirk;

2. stabilisation of certain headstones of people of note e.g. James Charles Purves who died as a result of the Charge of the Light Brigade.

The inventory is not supported by an index at the rear pointing to headstone references. Readers are advised to use

in MIcrosoft Word, the facility of ‘Control’ and ‘F’ in locating particular names, occupations or places. Hit ‘Ctrl’ and ‘F’ at the same time and a box will appear. Type in the name you are looking for or the trade e.g. ISABLE, DODD, HENRY, MURRAY, MASON, JOINER, BUILDER and take it from there. The system will find the person for you.

Row 1 and some headstones against the east wall

(Swan) (Large headstone) – JOHN ANDERSON who died Coldstream Mains 4th August 1889 aged 76 years. Also AGNES ROBERTSON his wife who died 7th April 1889 aged 73 years. Also JOHN his son and AGNES his daughter who died in infancy. Also JANE ROBERTSON his mother in law who died 1st October 1863 aged 62 years. Also ANN ANDERSON who died Coldstream Mains 8th March 1925 aged 76 years. JAMES EASTON beloved husband of Ann Anderson died Bogend 11th January 1936 aged 55 years. Also JANE EASTON only child of the above died 30th December 1962.

John Anderson was born at Fogo, Berwickshire, his occupation was a Ploughman and he lived at Coldstream Mains. His Wife Agnes (Robson?) was born at Swinton. In the 1861 census, John’s mother in law was Jane Robson, age 57 years and a Domestic Servant putting the name Robertson in doubt. Son James, age 15 years was born in Duns and he was an Agricultural Servant. However, this does not seem to be the James Easton above. Daughter Jane, age 18 years was born in Duns and was a Domestic Servant. However, again this does not seem to be the Jane Easton above. Ann, daughter, age 13 years was born at Polwarth. (NB the 1861 census would

have made Ann 88 years on death, is this the same one?). Agnes, daughter, was also born at Polwarth.

(Swan) (Small stone) – JOHN GILLIES died Coldstream 6th October 1888 aged 55 years.

(Cargill) JAMES YOUNG’s burying place. Said JAMES YOUNG died 8 September 1831 aged 47 years. Also ELIZABETH (KNOX per D/Register) died at Eccles 9 May 1859 aged 72 years. Also JAMES son died 20 May 1851 aged 33 years. Also JOHN son died aged 74 Years. Also MARY daughter died aged 62 years. Both died 22 November 1884.

The 1851 census record shows Elizabeth Young (nee Knox) aged 66 living in Coldstream Mains with her children John (37) and James (32), both Agricultural Labourers and also Elizabeth (34) and Mary (30) whose occupation is listed as ‘employed on farm’. By 1881, Elizabeth (elder) and son James had passed away and John, Mary and Elizabeth were living together at 8 Dunse Road. John’s occupation was a Provisions Merchant; Mary is listed as a Housekeeper and Elizabeth as formerly a Farm Worker. Both John and Mary died on the same day in November 1884, John from Heart Disease and Mary from Intussusception.

(Cargill) (Table stone only top part left). MARY INGLIS spouse of THOMAS INGLIS Parish Schoolmaster Coldstream aged 62. Said THOMAS INGLIS 27/?/????

(Cargill) Erected by JOHN KIKWOOD (NB should have been Kirkwood as below but leave as original spelling) in memory of ELIZABETH YOUNG wife who died 16 January 1839 aged 53 years. Also JAMES son who died 24 November 1817 aged 1 year. Also JAMES son who died 15 October 1828

aged 1 year. Also said JOHN KIRKWOOD who died 11 December 1853 aged 79 years.

The 1851 census shows a John Kirkwood living in Coldstream with his 25 year old daughter Elizabeth. His occupation is shown as a Chelsea Pensioner and he was born in 1774 in Melrose. John’s army discharge papers show that he enlisted in the Berwickshire Militia in March 1803. He was discharged after serving 26 years, 1 year as a Corporal and 25 years as a Sergeant. The records also show that John was 5’10 ½” tall; he had brown hair and blue eyes.

(Cargill) (Table stone) GIUSEPPI FRANCESCO GIUSTINELLI a native of Orvietta (?) in Italy who died at the Hirsel 30 September 1820 at an advanced age after residence here of nearly half a century. Stone placed here by EARL OF HOME.

(Swan) (Against the east wall) MATTHEW TURNBULL surgeon and of ELEANOR WEATHERLY his wife. And of MATTHEW JAMES TURNBULL MD FRCS JP died 10th January 1894.

Matthew J Turnbull was born at Coldstream, his occupation in 1891 a Justice of the Peace for the County of Berwick and Doctor of Medicines (Duly Registered) General Medical Practitioner. In 1881 he lived in 19 High Street “Tweed View”. In 1891 he lived at 21 Tweed View. Also in the house at that time was Elizabeth Brodie who was born at Stronsay, Orkney, Catherine J. Kinghorn age 26, who was born at Dunglass, Haddingtonshire. Her occupation was a Table Maid Domestic Servant. There was also Mary S. Whun who was born at Gatehouse,

Kirkcudbrightshire and her occupation was a Nurse Maid Domestic Servant. Matthew J Turnbull’s father, Matthew Turnbull, was also born in Coldstream and he was also a Medical Doctor (Edinburgh University). He lived at 13 High Street (This was in 1861).

(Swan) JANETTE E BEDFORD wife of MATTHEW TURNBULL MD of Coldstream born 7th March 1829 and who died 11th December 1857. On the south side - SOPHIA OLIVER wife of MATTHEW TURNBULL MD born at –lnghen 18th November 1825 died at Coldstream 28th June 1887. On north side – Also ANN BEDFORD her mother died at Coldstream 2nd April 1859.

(Cargill) (Small headstone) Miss MARGARET DARLING died 6 February 1816. Also AGNES DARLING sister who died 5 August 1818 spouse to ROBERT GRIEVE tenant in West Mains both daughters of late THOMAS DARLING Surgeon in Longheugh and Esq of Apple Tree Leaves. Also CHRISTINA MARGARET died 27 June 1871 aged 27 years. Daughters of GEORGE GILLIES Surgeon Coldstream. Sons GEORGE, DAVID SETON and WILLIAM died in infancy and buried at Kelso Abbey. Wife REBECCA JANE SETON died 9 January 1879 aged 78 years.

George Gillies was born in Hamilton Lanarkshire and he became an L R C Surgeon (Edinburgh) and a General Practitioner. In 1861, he lived at 27 High Street. His wife Rebecca Jane Seton was born at Bombay, East Indies. According to the online census of 1871, son George Seton Gillies was a Royal Maind Stramer's Parn Unemployed.

James Noble was born in Peebles. Occupation, Carpenter employing 10 Men 12 Boys “In 1861 Census” Lived 14 New Road in 9 rooms. Wife Margaret born Selkirk. In 1851 he was employing 4 men. Living at 2 Dove Cot. In 1871, he was employing 12 Men 6 Boys. In 1861 Son Andrew age 27 Unmarried Occupation carpenter (Foreman) born Selkirk. Other Children Rachel age 25, Ellen age 23, William age 12, James age 9.

George Wilson was born at Carham. His occupation was a Miller and he lived at Mill House, Sprouston. Wife Agnes was born at Coldstream.

Andrew Guthrie was born at Coldstream, occupation a Shoemaker and he lived at 7 Market Street. His wife Agnes was born at Coldstream. In 1861, 6 children were at home - Janet age 12, John age10, Mary age 8, Agnes age 6, Robert age 4, Andrew age 1. Where the rest of the family is buried, is unclear. Also there is dubiety over the age of Andrew.

(Swan) (Headstone surrounded by low iron railings) – In loving memory of PETER HOGARTH painter Coldstream who died 24 April 1886 in his 61st year. Also WILLIAM son who died 20 years. Also MAGGIE daughter aged 17 years. Also JESSIE his daughter. Also ELLEN, CATHERINE, JANE and PETER who all died in infancy. Also JAMES son who died 3rd April 1899 aged 32 years. Also JANET NOBLE wife who died 13th June 1914 aged 77 years. Also MARION STEWART HOGARTH dearly beloved wife of Peter Hogarth who died 24th

Peter Hogarth was born at Kelso, occupation House Painter and he lived at 21 High Street. His wife Janet was born at Coldstream. From the 1891 census, also in the house and with the same occupation House Painters were

John Lamb was born at Berwick, occupation Roper and he lived at 3 Gas lane. His wife Margaret was born at Berwick.

BOSTON wife 51 years (date gone).(Swan) Erected by ELLEN SHIEL Coldstream in memory of ANDREW SHIEL husband who died 2nd February 1857 aged 31 years. Also ELLEN daughter who died 5th February 1857 aged 3 months. Also ELLEN SHIEL who died17th April 1910 aged 79 years.

Andrew Shiel was born at Coldstream, occupation Farmer and lived at the Hillhouse. He was employing 1 man and 1 boy. This farm is where the Cottage Hospital and Doctors’ Surgery now are. In 1841, James Shiel was living at the same Farm with his wife Jane. Robert age 30 son of James he was interred at Chirnside on the 9th December 1840. In 1841 also in the house was Catherine age 15 occupation FS (probably Female Servant), Jane aged 15, occupation Dress Maker, Helen aged 13, occupation FS. This place also appears to be called Hillhead.

(Swan) 1881 – In memory of JOHN ROEBUCK who died 23rd October 1877 aged 75 years. Also ISABEL SHAFTOE his wife who died 6th May 1868 aged 58 years. Also EDWARD son who died 12th

John Roebuck was born in Ireland, occupation Shoemaker. In 1871 he lived at 9 Duke Street. In 1861, they lived in 13 Duke Street and he was a Shoemaker Journeyman. Wife Isabella (Isabel) was born at Coldstream. In 1861 they had 2 children at home, Richard age 23, occupation Shoemaker Journeyman and Edward age 16, occupation Shoemaker Apprentice.

(Cargill) (Decrepit) WILLIAM SHORT Teacher in Coldstream who died 4 July 1820 aged 34 years.

(Cargill) Erected by DORETHY LEITCH in memory of husband THOMAS LEITCH husband died 2 February 1834 aged 42 years. (NB This is the way Dorethy was spelt)

(Swan) Erected by HENRY FAIRGRIEVE Coldstream in memory of his children HENRY and JOHN who died 15 February 1869 aged 3 weeks. Also AGNES who died 4 April 1879 aged 5 ½ years. Also the above HENRY FAIRGRIEVE who died 10 October 1908 aged 74 years. Also AGNES AMOS wife of the above HENRY FAIRGRIEVE who died 26 November 1927 aged 88 years.

According to the 1901 census, Henry Fairgrieve was born at Dirleton, Haddingtonshire, occupation Brewer’s Manager. He lived at Cheviot View, High Street East. . In 1891 he was described as a Commercial Traveller living in 38 High Street. Wife Agnes was born at Gifford, Haddingtonshire

Thomas Stamford was born at Berwick, occupation Draper and he lived at East High Street. His wife Elizabeth was born at Eccles. In 1851, also in the house was Margaret age 32, born at Berwick, unmarried William born at Berwick age 25 and his occupation a Draper.

James Stewart was born at Coldstream, occupation Mason and he seemed to live and die at Coldstream New Town in 2 rooms. His wife Agnes was born in England. They had by 1861, 7 children Jane, age 22 occupation Domestic Servant, Adam age 20, occupation Mason, Thomas age 16 occupation, Mason (App), Agnes age 13, Alexander age 11, Isabella age 8 and Elizabeth age 4.

(Swan) (Likely to be related to above) Erected by ALEXANDER STEWART Mason Lennel Newtown in memory of son ROBERT who died 26th April 1818 aged 15 months. Also above ALEXANDER STEWART who died at Newcastle on Tyne 1st February 1859 aged 53 years.

(Cargill) Erected by MARGARET HUME in memory of husband WILLIAM HUME who died at Coldstream 2nd October 1854 aged 34 years. Also above MARGARET HUME who died at Coldstream 11th January 1875 aged 55 years.

William Hume was born at Kelso, occupation Innkeeper and he lived at 47…... His wife Margaret was born in England. Also 4 daughters, Isabella born 1842, Jane born 1845, Margaret born 1847 and Mary, born 1850. In the census for 1851 in the same house that day was Robert Stewart, occupation Spirit Merchant, the address is given as 47 High Street West end. Also in the house or Hotel as it may have been was George Miller age 25, occupation a Hostler.

John Matthew was born at Coldstream, occupation Agricultural Labourer. He lived at 1 Store Cottage. His wife Ann was born at Southdean, Roxburghshire.

Alexander Hogg was born at Melrose, Roxburghshire, occupation Baker. Wife Jane was born at Gordon, occupation Shoemaker.

(Cargill) In memory of WILLIAM REID 38 years gardener at Lees died 18 January 1838 aged 63 years. Also children WILLIAM and MARY died in infancy. Also HELEN BEVERIDGE wife died at Horndendeanbank 24 January 1848 aged 75 years. Also CATHERINE REID grand daughter died at Lees 30 October 1838 aged 6 years.

(Swan) In memory of JOHN HARDIE who died 29th November 1868 aged 54 years. Also FRANCIS his wife who died

25th June 1879 aged 61 years, Also HELEN who died 21st March 1857 aged 1 year. Also HELEN who died 13th

Abigail Ledgerwood is a mystery at this stage, as to why she was buried within the Hardie plot.

The Gillespie family were Corn Millers at Tweed Mill. The first Gillespie we come across was in the 1600s. Andrew married Agnes Wadell in 1662 and they had 9 children. When the Earl of Haddington built the mill at Tweed Mill, George Gillespie was appointed the first Miller. A foundation stone was laid in honour of Eliza, wife of the Earl of Haddington and the stone was inscribed “E T H 1747” The family went into milling in many Mills round the Borders and Scotland. George, who had married Margaret Thomson of Roseburn Edinburgh, emigrated with her to Australia in 1853. Many of their family followed them out to Australia. Margaret Thomson was related to the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

They did eventually start a mill in Australia and were one of the largest milling companies in the country. There is a great deal more information on this family but too much for this publication.

A Crimean Interlude

This was the only major war fought by Britain between the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815 and the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899. Whilst it is apparent from a study of the local newspapers this war seemed to have little impact on the local population, for one Coldstream man at least this war was to give him a permanent place in one of the most famous actions in military history.

In October 1854, the British together with their French and Sardinian allies were besieging the Russians in the naval fortress of Sevastopol in the Crimean Peninsula. The siege works were not complete and the Russians were able to make several ‘sorties’ against their besiegers. On 25th October such a ‘sortie’ took place. Firstly the Russian cavalry attacked towards the port of Balaclava in an attempt to separate the besiegers from their supplies. The initial attack was repelled by the 93rd Highlanders (The Thin Red Line). Secondly, the disordered Russians were dispersed by an uphill charge by the British Heavy Cavalry under General Scarlett. This led inexorably to the third part of the battle known to history as ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’. Amongst those heroes was Private James Charles Purves of the 11th Hussars.

Purves was born at Lennelhill, Coldstream on 7th June 1830 where his father was the tenant farmer. As James was the youngest son, there was no chance of him taking over the farm and

he left home, went to London and joined the cavalry in 1850.

In the afternoon of 25th October, the erroneous order came down from the British Commander-in-Chief Lord Raglan, who with his staff was ensconced on the Sapoune Heights overlooking the battlefield. The message was supposed to advise the commanders of the Cavalry Division, Lords Lucan and Cardigan, that the Russians be prevented from carrying off some guns they had captured from the Turks earlier in the day. However the order was misinterpreted to mean capturing Russian guns which had been positioned at the end of the North Valley. The problem was that whilst Raglan from his high vantage point could see exactly what he himself meant, the cavalry down in the valley could not. Purves was badly wounded in the Charge and eventually ended up in hospital in Scutari which later would come under the control of Florence Nightingale. Purves strangely enough was nursed by a girl from Berwick upon Tweed and from his hospital bed sent the following abridged letter to his brother:

“My Dear Brother,

You can’t think what delight I felt in this miserable place to get your most kind letter. I must tell you of the nature of my wound. It was canister shot through my left leg which necessitated amputation in the temporary hospital in Balaclava. I was on the steamer to Scutari for 10 days with nobody in attendance and the rain coming through the decks and saturating you. My leg is cut off very long about a foot below the knee so I can have a cork leg and having both my arms can earn a good living yet.

The Battle of Balaclava was a disastrous affair for the poor Light Cavalry. I believe Captain Nolan was

sent to reconnoiter the hills on each side (where the Turks had lost some guns to an earlier Russian ‘sortie’). Whatever report he took to Lord Raglan we know not, as he came back with an order to Lord Lucan for the Light Brigade to charge and take the field guns. Lord Cardigan then gave the order for the Brigade to advance with the 11th in Second Line. Off we went tearing towards destruction. The round shot came first; one most wonderfully came past my shoulder striking my rear rank man right in the chest. Onwards we went. I could see the shell bursting over our heads and hear the grape and canister hissing through us. But I felt or feared nothing – a sort of wildness came over me and I seemed to care not. Onwards still. The guns were silenced and the Russians would not stand our charge. We cut down the gunners and literally took the whole lot. ‘Hurrah my boys ‘ sung out our brave Colonel Douglas ‘Lets give them another Charge and we’ll take the guns home with us’. I found myself as excited as possible singing out ‘Come on boys’. At last someone gave the alarm that a large body of Russian Lancers had formed up to cut of our line of retreat. ‘We must retire’ said Lord George Paget and so we did. I had allowed my horse to flag a little when one of the gentlemen came on to attack me with his lance and was making a poke for my back. I wheeled round in the saddle parried his lance and gave him a second rear point to the left of his right shoulder which I expect will spoil his lancing for some time. I was quite chuckling to myself when I got a rap on my leg as if from a sledgehammer. I looked down and saw blood gushing from a good sized hole. ‘Now then old horse’ I says ‘Save my life now!’ I had seen over the field some Cossacks spiking any of our poor fellows who were down. I kept the right spur at work and galloped a mile or more when I got quite blind and faint. I dimly saw a tent chum who helped me

and gave me a good drink from his water bottle. That revived me no end We then went forward to where the Regiment was forming and old Cardigan was sitting with the tears almost in his eyes when he saw his smart Brigade so cut up. Our fellows cheered him when he said ‘You must not think men that this is one of my mad-brained actions; I would have given almost anything rather than it had happened.’ I moved forward and asked to be taken to the rear. I was then hurried off to the doctor who had a lot of our officers and men in a nice green ditch of a vineyard where we could lie up the slope. I had lost a great deal of blood and one of the officers gave me a good swig of brandy from his flask. The doctor stopped the bleeding and we had to wait some time for the ambulance which came at last and took us off to hospital and you know the rest.

Give my love to all our family, break this affair very gently to mother and tell her I shall write in a day or two but it is a great exertion. And now dear brother hoping and trusting that God will allow me to see you all again, believe me your most affectionate brother.”

Unfortunately there were no further letters and Private Purves died in Scutari Hospital in January 1855 from blood poisoning as happened in so many cases of amputations at that time and thus passed a Coldstream hero.

Private Purves’ final resting place in unknown although it is likely to have been close to the hospital in Scutari. His name however is still remembered on his parent’s gravestone in the old part of Lennel Churchyard. The headstone has collapsed and it is the intention of the Coldstream and District Local History Society, along with the authorities, to have the headstone lifted and repaired.

James Lawrence was the record-breaking Newcastle United footballer holding the record of played in 495 games, winning 3 league titles and an FA Cup winner’s medal. He was a goalkeeper. He played for NUFC between 1904 and 1922. Born in Partick, Glasgow, his career ‘took in’ Partick Athletic, Glasgow Perthshire during which period he occasionally assisted Hibernian, and Newcastle United. After retiring from Newcastle, in 1922 he became the South Shields manager. Sadly he was dismissed in January 1923 but soon became the manager of Preston. In 1925 he became a coach in Karlsruhe, Germany, and later returning to Britain. to become the Stranraer chairman in 1933 ‘to his demise’. Full football honours included 1 Scotland cap in 1911, Football League champion in 1905, 1907 and 1909, FA Cup Winner 1910 and FA Cup Finalist in 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1911. An intellectual joker off the field, James was at the heart of United’s great team spirit. He was a fine and consistent goalkeeper although sometimes accused of disliking high crosses. He was appointed Chairman of the Players’ Union in September 1922 and he

discovered the great Alec James when in charge at Preston. He died in November 1934 aged 49 years. As yet, we don’t know where he is buried.

CRIMINAL CHARGE

There was great interest in September 1913 in the trial of Dr. Thomas Murdoch Campbell of 9 Winston Street, Parkhead, Glasgow who appeared before Lord Johnston in the High Court of Judiciary in Edinburgh on a charge of having caused a woman’s death by performing an illegal operation. Before the court opened, a large crowd had gathered in Parliament Square to witness the arrival of Dr. Campbell from prison.

The doctor was accused with having, on 22nd or 23rd April 1913, used an instrument or instruments, in the body of Barbara Murray or Lawrence, wife of and residing with, James Lawrence, 4 The Terrace, Ovingham, Northumberland, she being then pregnant. In carrying out an abortion, Dr. Campbell, in using instruments, was said to have caused the young lady’s death and was charged with her murder.

It was remembered that a sensation was created at Coldstream (Lennel Kirkyard) by the exhumation of Mrs Lawrence’s body where she was buried. Her parents belonged to Coldstream. Additional interest was raised by the fact that Jimmy Lawrence was a famous footballer. Dr. Campbell was married to Barbara Murray’s sister. The accused pleaded not guilty.

WOMEN ASKED TO RETIRE

After the jury had been empanelled, His Lordship said he would remind all those in the court that it was not customary to close the court in cases of this kind but he would recommend all women who

were present leave the court. The few ladies present did in fact retire.

THE HUSBAND’S EVIDENCE

The first witness was James Lawrence (30) who said he married the deceased on 24th February 1913 in a registrar’s office in Newcastle–upon-Tyne. He had known her some considerable time. At that date, his wife’s parents did not know about the marriage but he understood they became aware of the marriage a few weeks later. Eventually the couple had moved to live at Ovingham.

On 15th April, Barbara Lawrence left to visit her sister, Mrs Campbell and her husband saw her off in relatively good health. She told her husband that she was pregnant and was going to her sister because Dr. Campbell had been drinking excessively. Barbara returned the next day to Newcastle.

She went to Glasgow again on 22nd April and Mr. Lawrence was to follow her up the next day, on the train. On arriving in Glasgow, Mr. Lawrence was met by Dr. and Mrs Campbell who explained that Barbara was in a nursing home very ill, having gone through an important operation. She was holding her own but still seriously ill. Later, Barbara was to die.

Accounts indicate that Barbara died as a result of hemorrhaging caused by a rare form of ‘ectopic pregnancy’. Expert medical witnesses revealed that Dr. Campbell had followed procedures expected of a surgeon but had probably breached the womb wall. He was highly regarded as a surgeon and had served in the Boer War and was later to be made a Freeman of Glasgow.

Alex George Gray, a member of the firm J. and A. Gray, Undertakers, was present at the interment of Barbara Lawrence, he knew her personally, and this took place on 28th April 1913. He had also attended on Friday 6th June 1913 the exhumation of the body, where he witnessed the body along with William Renton, Gravedigger. The coffin was placed on a trestle and medical men examined the body.

CHARGE WITHDRAWN

Dr. Campbell was eventually cleared of the charge of murder of his sister-in-law, Barbara Lawrence, yet it was likely that in following accepted procedure he had caused the rupture to her womb. However, Dr. Campbell’s drinking habits, Barbara Lawrence’s weak constitution and the medical profession closing ranks appeared to contribute to the inevitable innuendo in this case..

William Douglas senior was born in Coldstream with his father being Thomas and his mother Alice. Thomas was a Banker living on the High Street South Side in 1841. Also in the house in 1841 was son Richard and he was described as a Farmer. In 1871, William

senior is recorded as living in the High Street Blue Bell Iron (think it should be Blue Bell Inn); he was described as a Bank Agent Land Ornes. In 1891, son William was living in 47 British Linen Build, occupation Solicitor DNP. Mother Elizabeth was born in England.Thomas was also a bank agent. In1901, he was living in the British Linen Bank, 55 High Street and married to Ethel who was born in England. They had three children, William G Douglas born 1896, Thomas B Douglas born 1894 and Arthur R Douglas born 1900.
