The purpose of th is document is to prov ide that s t rong v is ion as wel l asthe fundamenta l deta i led in format ion and drawings necessary to makeLenah a rea l i ty. Each sect ion of th is documentbegins wi th an ar t is t ic v iew of a por t ion of Lenah, fo l lowed by concretedrawings such as Si te p lans, F loor P lans and Elevat ions which def ineeveryth ing in the bu i l t env i ronment requi red to make that v is ion a rea l i ty.

In o ther words, the v is ion is rea l and can be bu i l t prec ise ly.The s t reetscapes in th is document are not over ly renderedfa lse images meant s imply to impress wi thout any bas is o frea l i ty. Rather they are rea l depic t ions der ived d i rect ly f romthe measured, deta i led p lans, e levat ions and s i te p lans.

We began c rea t i ng t he v i s i on o f Lenah , by f i r s tunderstanding the h is tor ica l and geographica l context o fthe Dul les South Pro ject Area. Based on research done bythe URS Corporat ion of Gai thersburg, Mary land, as wel l aspersonal s i te v is i ts and h is tor ica l research, we learned thearea was made of predominant ly vernacular arch i tectura lprecedents based on the rura l Amer ican way of l i fe . Themajor i ty o f the bu i ld ing types were funct ional and honest ,bu i l t by unt ra ined bu i lders us ing loca l mater ia ls . However,t he re we re a l so some examp les o f more h igh s t y l earch i tectura l bu i ld ings which insp i red us. In a l l cases, thearch i tectura l precedents were Colon ia l Amer ican in s ty le ,pr inc ipa l ly Georg ian.

Therefore we have used Georg ian Arch i tecture as the core in f luence fora l l o f Lenah’s var ious bu i ld ing types.Th is s t y le fea tu res symmet r i ca l f o rms , masonry wa l l s w i th s id ingaccents . Windows are double hung wi th s imple roofs made up of bothh ipped and gabled forms. There is an emphasis on order, c lass ica ldeta i ls such as r ich corn ices, handsome por t icos and operable shut ters .Mater ia ls are authent ic and co lors are r ich and h is tor ica l in nature.

Cars, park ing spaces,and garages, are h idden f rom v iew when poss ib le . In caseswhere garages are v is ib le f rom the s t reet , they wi l l bet reated as carr iage houses wi th smal ler ind iv idual doors,sof tened by arches and canopies.

TThe Middle School site is located onthe north end of the project. It

becomes the first architectural anchorfor the community. The site is organized

in a way which fronts the primary façadeof the school facing south and visually

connecting it with the north end of theresidential portion of the community.

The Main Entrance facade is highlighted by aFederal Style Tower and continuous classically

detailed portico which stretches between the twomain entries. Athletic fields are located to the north

and west ends of the site to buffer the school from thetraffic along Tall Cedars Parkway.

TThe Community Club is located on the north end of thesite. It offers its long facade to the neighborhood to theNorth, while the eastern facade forms a focal point ofthe long street entering from the East.

S TThe Neighborhood Center will become the business center of thecommunity. The buildings are located directly across the street fromthe homes in neighboring land bays. They are scaled and detailedin historically compatible styles to the homes. All buildings will havestrong pedestrian as well as vehicular access. Buildings are alldesigned to have detailed elevations on all four sides. The siteconsists of several residentially scaled two story office buildings.These buildings sit within a rich pedestrian hardscape andlandscape plaza. The anchor of the site is a two story retail and

studio office building which occupies the center of thebuilding row on the north end of the site.

Boutique shops and small scaled cafes front onto awide outdoor plaza with trees canopied above.Access to the studio spaces above can be gainedeither from inside the retail spaces or from an exteriorcovered pedestrian walk in the rear.

Parking is located on the internal south portion of thesite in order to screen the cars from the exteriorstreet views. A community park and trail system liesto the south of the parking areas. A restaurant site islocated on the southeast end of the building row,which will offer pleasant views and outdoor diningspaces which could tie into the park system.
