Introduction
The goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is
to develop potato cultivars that are genetically superior and that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade in the fresh market and processing market
Long Storage Chipping Lines (longer than Snowden) Snowden consistently has commercial chip quality
through 6 months from 47ºF storage, and frequently from 7-8 months in storage (US North: March-April)
Specific Gravity ≥ Snowden
Snowden consistently has specific gravity ≥ 1.080
High tuber yield, ≥Snowden//Tuber shape?
Disease Resistance Snowden tolerates Verticillium wilt, early blight, has
some late blight tolerance and it is susceptible to common scab.
Glycoalkaloids
Snowden develops high total glycoalkaloids
Long Storage Chip Breeding Objectives
Lelah (W2717-5) Pedigree: Snowden x S440
Maintains chip quality at least a month longer than Snowden from 45-50°F
Higher and more consistent gravity than Snowden
Better tuber shape and uniformity than Snowden.
Low glycoalkaloid content, much lower than Snowden
Lelah Chip Color (1-9 scale, lower=better)

Specific Gravity (24 trials): Lelah has specific gravity larger than Snowden
WI Specific Gravity-North Central Lelah (W2717-5) vs.
Snowden
WI Specific Gravity in USPB/SFA-North Lelah (W2717-5) vs. Snowden
How about field yield?
Lelah is one of the prettiest clones we have!
WI Breeding Trials Tuber Yield Lelah vs. Snowden
Hancock, WI Trials
Lelah has moderate, lower tuber yields than Snowden: More similar yield to Snowden in low yielding environments
USPB/SFA Trials
Field Tuber Yield vs. Chip-stock Yield
Tuber yield is moderate Chip-stock yield of Lelah in May is perhaps tuber yield – storage losses What is the chip-stock yield of Snowden and similar varieties by mid April in WI? Most likely = 0
Lelah (W2717-5) Pedigree: Snowden x S440
Maintains chip quality at least a month longer than Snowden from 45-50°F.
Specific gravity is similar to Snowden in average but more consistent (less variable)
Better tuber shape and uniformity than Snowden.
Field yield lower than Snowden, but it is a choice as a chip-stock after 7-9 months in storage, when Snowden yield = $0
