description

Presentation of Lekshmy Parameswaran in the framework of the Design Thinking workshop Biocat organized a workshop (January 24, 2014, dHUB Building, Barcelona) about the application of Design Thinking in Health, a strategic topic with strong growth potential. The goals of the event are to provide a general overview of the methodology - considered by some as a true “work philosophy” for problem solving - as well as to explain its origins, fields of application, main benefits and to identify opportunities to innovate in health.

Why Healthcare can benefit from Design Thinking

©fuelfor 2014

- Healthcare challenges are complex and systemic. !- Healthcare challenges require multiple disciplines to collaborate.!!

- Healthcare demands empathy with people.!- Healthcare is broken and requires a paradigm-shift.

Case studies I Improving the experience of waiting

Client: Strategic design exploration Spain Time: 2010Project Description: A project to improve the experience of waiting in healthcare environments; expert and fieldwork insights were translated to an integrated system concept: furniture, mobile apps, services, spaces and communication concepts.Project duration: 2 months

Case studies I Improving the experience of waiting

Challenge !The experience of waiting in healthcare is a typical ‘pain point’ in most health systems the world over - it feels like wasted time.

Approach !Primary and secondary design research revealed a set of 6 driving insights to inform and inspire the design team.

Outcome !An experience design scenario was designed and visualised containing waiting spaces, furniture, services and applications that aim to make waiting time feel productive and more comfortable.!!!

Challenge !Hospices have a negative image in society despite their compassionate and skillful efforts to care for people at the end of life. And yet with increasingly ageing populations the demographics alone force us to rethink the way end-of-life care is delivered and experienced.!!

Approach !The team considered patient journeys from point of referral to hospice, daily life within hospices, handling the moment of death and following the family´s bereavement process. 16 key insights were identified and translated to opportunities to improve and impact the products, services, spaces and communication around hospice care.

Outcome !A design handbook and media launch presented a vision for the Hospitable Hospice of the future; 7 concepts were articulated that support a more open, personal and easier-to-navigate end-of-life experience. 24 universal experience design principles provide the building blocks for creating future services and spaces.
