Up&Coming 3

This is Up&Coming’s first issue, and this magazine was made for the college and high school students. In 2016, there are many magazines printed for teens and young adults but none are directed to the urban community. My plan with Up&Coming is to create that. I feel like if I had this magazine throughout my high school and college days I would have had an outlet. Something or someone who understands what it is like to be that age and be African American. I want this magazine to almost be a get away for the readers. Whenever you need a break from your day to day and your studies, I want readers to pick up Up&Coming and let it take your mind elsewhere for the time being.

Whats your favorite dance move? How old were you when your started dancing?

Where do you think you got your moves from? Mom or Dad or even Grandparents?

Tell us a little about yourself and some things about your life.

“My favorite move is the death drop. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but its this move where you spin around and just drop like your dead. But you have to do it right or it gonna look like you just fell on the floor and hurt yourself.”

“I was probably about nine years old. I kind of always knew I wanted to dance but I think my dream really took flight around that age. After that my mom and dad started putting me in dance classes. I’ve been perfecting my craft ever since.”

“I got my moves from my mom, for sure! My dad is more of a two stepper. My mom is always at my practices, so when we get home, she goes over them with me and tries her hardest to excute the moves. Its funny but its helpful. I’ve probably remembered a lot of my steps because my mom.”

“I’m the middle child out of five. I absoultely love my family. I love being around them, though to them is doesnt seem like it, its true. Some of my best memories are with my family.”

“I love music, I can’t sing so I dance. Dancing is a relief for me. I will stop whatever I’m doing to break out in a dance move. In a sense it keeps me calm. Maybe that’s what makes me want to dance, the fact that it takes me to another place, a calmer place.”

“Hip-Hop or Rap of course. Thats what I most-ly what I perform. But I like all kinds of music, I can probably dance to anything except country. I should proably learn that soon if I want to be on Broadway, I can get any kind of music there.”

“I want to be on Broadway. On my birthday for the past couple years now I’ve asked my mom to take me to Broadway. I love it, the bright lights, the dancing, the singing, the fame. I want it, I want it all. I plan to get it into it, once I graduate high school, that is my goal.”

“I’m not sure yet I’m only 15 years old and in 9th grade, I feel like I have a little time before I should or can decide that.

What makes you wanna dance, what helps you get up and move?

Whats your favorite style of music to dance to? What do you want to accomplish in five years with your dancing?

Do you have plans to go to college or dance school?

College is already hard enough to get into, to make things even harder, you then have to follow a plan laid out for you by the chairperson of your department. For some this is harder than having to get up early in the morning for work. Here at Up&Coming we understand. College isn’t always easy. First you pay for school, then pay another $100 or so for books, only to sit class for a hour or more

and retain half of what you were taught. Our plan is to give you 4 tips for smooth sailing out of any university.Tip One: The most important guideline of them all PAY ATTENTION! You cannot pass without good notes. It helps to have things to look back on, when studying for test and quizzes, and we all know how much those count towards a grade.Tip Two: Guys go to class. I’m 1000% sure that half of you will not

attend 100% of class, but at least try 85-90%. 100% of the time attendace counts. Don’t let this be the reason you fail a class.Tip Three: Always talk to your advisor and make sure you guys are on the SAME page. This is especially true for transfer students. An advisor is supposed to give you the best plan of action but some things don’t work for you. You have find that middle. Tip

Four: Do not stress! I repeat do not stress! Stressing doesn’t get you anywhere and more than likely it will only hender you. You will feel defeated in the end. Before you go completly crazy stop, breath, and then get back to your business. You honeslty have a lot of time. Those my readers are some of the best tips you can follow to have the safest flight of college.

Expensive?or

Affordable?Up&Coming Magazine takes a look at fashion for the college budget!

Up&Coming 17

Some of our fashion trends are miles away from the school girl dresses and button up collar shirts, that we used to wear growing up. Now our jeans are from major name brands and our shirts more expensive then shoes. But what if your in college? Not all college students are blessed with full rides, most of us have to pay. Pay for a part of tution, books, and other fees. So does that percentage of students have the money for clothes? Expensive clothes? To be honest, the most affordable clothes for most college students is Target or maybe the some small store in the mall that some people haven’t even heard of. If you are like me and many other college students and some people who aren’t even in college, you’ll have to find a way to buy the things you like.
