What is BIM?

4

BIM, software, process, technology or what?

No practical consensus of what BIM is

Every presenter still today includes a what is BIM section

Most common perception of people in the industry is that

BIM is software.

Other often used: Process, Model, Populated Database

describing facility

My favorite: BIM is a Technology

BIM Graphics to objects and geometry

6

Drawings are graphics (appearance important)

A BIM consists of objects

that may contain geometry

and/or attributes

(structure important)

BIM – Structured data

DRUM - Distributed information management

Functional objects Physical objects Logical objects Abstract objects

Objects describing building

Objects describing process • Schedules

• Resources

• Costs

• Quality assurance

• Tasks

• Work

• Approvals

• RFI:s

• Submittals

openBIM definition

openBIM means that BIM operations and BIM data is not

tied to any specific tool, software or vendor.

– Freedom to choose the tools best suited for the purpose.

– Freedom to transfer data between tools.

– Freedom to develop very purpose specific tools independent of

any platform.

Open standard data formats (IFC, CityGML, KML…) are

used for communication

BIM and openBIM adoption

Paradigm shifts in Information Processing

Information and Information Technology becoming a

utility, everything in the cloud, user does not need to care

where it comes from

Information transforming from human readable

documents to structured semantic data that can be

processed automatically

H2H, borders between humans coming down, countries,

organizations, projects. Humans as the top of hierarchy,

participating in several structures, Enterprise, Public

organizations, Projects…

14

System and information architecture for BIM

Three tier system architecure

– Current native applications with native proprietary schemas for

intelligent and parametric modelling optimized for the task and

discipline at hand

– Publishing platforms by all major BIM vendors, fed by the native

applications, using IFC:ish schema. Most of information usage

applications written against this tier.

– Publishing platforms interoperate using IFC and Linked data

15

Why semantic data?

Technology development enables automatic use of data

– Robots (good example ping pong playing robot)

– Augmented reality taken to next step by Google Tango project

– Drones used for many purposes

16

Augmented reality & wearable computers…

Kopin Golden-i

Google Glasses use an automatic connection to the cloud to provide access to enormous amounts of information, data and applications…

Robots in production…

Are we educating for the past or for the future?

How can we get talented people interested in working in the AEC industry?

Fabrication BIM

What's coming in BIM Fabrication ? Assembly

Robotic Welding

IFC the latest project now 27.6.2012

22 BIM in fabrication Mick Hodgson

Using IFC for machine and ERP communication

Current formats used are 2D (DSTV, dwg)

Assembly automation using industrial robots is coming

– 3D information required

Project by AISC, Georgia Tech, Tekla, FICEP, Steel

Projects and others to create MVD:s to be used in

fabrication

See http://www.aisc.org/BIMsteel.aspx for more info

specially Automating Steel Fabrication section.

Also need for other semantic information

• Terrain models

• Cadastral information

• Zoning information

• Utilities

BIM – GeoSpatial integration very

hot topic • Several standardization initiatives ongoing

– ISO BIM-GIS Ad hoc group

– OGC – buildingSMART MOU and joint project about alignments

– Extending IFC for Infrastructure projects – InfraBIM • Roads, Railways, Bridges, Tunnels, Dams etc

– Joint project to develop conceptual schema of alignments for InfraGML and IFC

– Initiative to generate CityGML and IndoorGML from IFC

• UK BIM Task Group

– Very ambitious project by UK to use BIM technology in all public projects by 2016

• VCON project by Dutch and Swedish traffic authorities to use BIM for whole life cycle of reoads and railways

InfraGML and IFC

buildingSMART and OGC cooperation

Cooperation around BIM for Infrastructure

– LandXML only existing standards but development weak

– Autodesk and Bentley approached OGC to “take over” LandXML in

2012, bS openINFRA also interested

– OGC started first Land Development DWG and then Land

Development SWG to take on work

– First task to create conceptual schema of LandXML in UML by reverse

enginering, mostly by Paul Scarponcini from Bentley

– Results from Frascati OGC meeting:

-schema is too broken for compatible continuation

-future with InfraGML and IFC for infrastructure in cooperation with bS,

-scoping IFC for construction and GML for other purposes

-name changed to Land and Infrastructure DWG/SWG

26

use case driven subset of LandXML functionality

interoperability standard vs. negotiable template

SDO support

avoid possible legal issues

enables OGC baseline consistency

GML provides:

– feature model

– geometry support

– coordinate reference systems

– linear referencing

– TIN support

– compatibility with CityGML, TransXML

LandXML InfraGML Proposal

Indoor Navigation

Is going to be a huge issue for

the BIM and GeoSpatial communities

in the near future

Situation absurd and unbalanced now, outdoor navigation

ubiquitous globally but indoors, nothing

ILA developing indoor positioning

Data supply for this is going to be a big issue, volume >100

more than outdoor navigation, hundreds of thousands of data

suppliers -> standard distributed information architecture and

business model needed.

Thank you!
