What you always wanted to know . . . 1) What is known anyway in this field (state-of-the-art) ? 2) Where can I find someone with interest in my product (licensors/buyers) ? Who can help me developing my idea to a real product (partners) ? 3) What have these people invented anyway in this field (patent portfolio) ?
Some search examples

Do’s
• Use *** when searching on keyword(s)
Beginning of term followed by anything
• Always try to find the right ECLA-code(s) a.s.a.p.
Make your search keyword-independant
• Use ECLA-code(s) instead of IPC-code(s)
More detailed = more precise
• Search keyword(s) only in the field “Title or abstract”
Better chance to find something
• Use titles, abstracts and drawings to get a first impression
Reading can be done later

Don’ts
• Don’t search for applications, search for technology
Technological aspects are patented, not the applications
• Don’t forget to first make a list of available information
Be in control of your search
• Don’t focus on general aspects, focus on details
General aspects are well known, so not worth searching for
• Don’t give up too soon
There’s always something worthwhile to be found
• Don’t be happy if you haven’t found anything
There’s always a state-of-the-art on your topic

Lenses with variable focus length
Subject:
In order to perform microscopic research in a more
efficient way, I invented a new kind of lens system.
The focus point of my lens can be changed in a con-
tinously variable way. The lens system is filled with
a conducting fluid, which is in contact with two or
more electrodes. By changing the voltage over the
electrodes, I can thus change the focus of my lens
system.
Of course I do realise that this kind of lens can be
used in many applications like spectacles, illumina-
tion, endoscopy, microscopy, photography etc.
Question:
Is this a very original idea, in other words am I the
first one ?
Subquestions:
Where are these kind of lenses classified ? What is
the state-of-the-art ? Who can be my partner/buyer/
licensee/licensor ?

Edible vaccines
Subject:
In some parts of the world a lot of people are
starving, while at the same time these parts are
subject to specific diseases.
My idea is to solve both problems at the same time.
I can achieve that by modifying crops etc. in a way,
that when they grow they will produce medicine.
After harvesting the crops I can produce food of it,
hand it over to the sick and starving people, thus
giving them medicine and food at the same time.
Question:
What parties can we approach for possible coopera-
tion and/or licensing?
Subquestions:
Where are these kind of inventions classified ? Who
are the (main) patent applicants ?

Subject:
I’m doing research on how to assist people with a cardiac
arrest. I want to develop some new equipment in the field
of resuscitation, based on a frequently interrupted
pushing movement on the chest area of a victim/patient.
The other day I received a letter, in which a Mr Lars
Sunnanväder of Jolife AB warned me about the fact that
they had a patent position on this issue.
He told me to better stop my activities, otherwise I
probably would be accused of infringing their patent
rights.
Question:
What is the truth behind all this ?
Subquestions:
Do they have a patent position on this matter ? If so,
what is it ?
