a message from the city mayorOn behalf of Leicester City Council, and in partnership with British Cycling, I am very proud to welcome you to the second ‘Castle Classic’ cycle race, which is again being held as part of our annual Ride Leicester Festival.

Last year, we were very excited to welcome elite level competitive cycling back to the streets of our city for the first time in a generation. The route proved popular with racers and spectators for its fast and technical 4km route linking Leicester Castle, the Mile Straight and the King Power Stadium. This year, the race will ‘Return to the Cobbles’ of Leicester Castle.

I am delighted that the 2014 Castle Classic forms part of the British Cycling National elite Road Race Series. This series of 12 races will bring the UK’s top domestic teams and riders back to Leicester, and our inclusion in the series in a fantastic endorsement of Leicester’s event. It also brings a wonderful opportunity to showcase Leicester to an international audience with TV coverage of the race on the Eurosport channel.

Creating a more people and cycle-friendly city is one of the key aims of our Connecting Leicester programme. Along with major investment to our make streets safer and more attractive to cyclists, and a citywide programme of cycle training and led rides, events like the Castle Classic and our annual Sky Ride help to take cycling to new audiences and encourage wider community participation.

This year, hundreds of amateur cyclists will take part in sportive and triathlon events, along with youth and workplace challenges, ahead of the Castle Classic race, and this is a really welcome addition to the event.

We are grateful for the support of De Montfort University, Leicester City Football Club, Velobici, Hodges & Drake, Marshall SEAT, The King Richard III Visitor Centre, Belvoir Brewery, Walkers & Son, Deli’ish, The Black Horse Restaurant, Leicester Forest Cycle Club, Leicester Triathlon Club and the many volunteers who have all helped to create another unique event for Leicester.

The Castle Classic is something we can all be proud of.

Sir Peter SoulsbyCity Mayor
