A lot of young artists, for example Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris, went to Paris to live and work there. Picasso, Braque and Gris were very talented and their work became famous all over the world. Today, they are famous, because they created and developed a new style of art, Cubism. Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881. When he was 19 he went to live in Paris. There he experimented with different styles of art. Between 1901 and 1904 he used a lot of blue and green in his paintings. People call this period Picasso’s Blue Period. After that, between 1904 and 1906, orange and pink were the dominant colours in his work. This was Picasso’s Rose Period. In 1907 Picasso met Georges Braque, a French artist and sculptor. Together they created the cubist style of painting. One of the first artists to experiment with this new style was the Spanish artist, Juan Gris. His painting, Portrait of Pablo Picasso (1912), became one of the most famous examples of Cubism. Cubism was important because it was the first style of abstract art and it influenced a lot of other artists. It was the start of modern art.

CubismAt the start of the 20th century Paris was an important centre for art.

What is Cubism? In the past artists painted very realistic pictures of people and things. They wanted their pictures to be an exact copy of real life. The Cubists changed this. They started to experiment with geometric shapes. They used cubes and other shapes to represent people and objects. The images in their paintings were not realistic. They looked like a mosaic with a lot of separate parts.

Look at the painting Harlequin with a Guitar by Juan Gris. Can you see a person in the picture? What is he doing? Is it a realistic representation of the person?

Cubism was a new form of art because Cubists didn’t copy real images. They painted the geometrical images they ‘saw’ in their minds.

Now, close your eyes and try to visualise one of your friends. It isn’t easy! When we imagine a person we don’t ‘see’ a complete picture of them. We focus on their characteristic parts, for example their head, face or hands. We sometimes also ‘see’ the person from different perspectives: from the front and from the side. Picasso, Braque and Gris tried to paint this in their pictures. They painted the characteristic parts of an image, and they included the different perspectives of an object in the same picture.

Look at the Portrait of Pablo Picasso by Juan Gris. Gris focuses on Picasso’s face in particular, and he paints the eyes, nose and mouth from different perspectives.

Collage

The Cubists painted pictures, but they also made collages. They cut out images from magazines and newspapers and combined them with other materials to make a new picture. Thanks to Cubism, Collage became an important technique in modern art.
