POOL COMMITTEE Update By Maura Thomas The new pool committee has been hard at work on two major initiatives. First, our pump room is in dire need of a complete overhaul. The committee is grateful to have the volunteer efforts of a true expert in community pools with years of experience, so we are confident that we’ll be able to make the best decision at the best price. All options are currently on the table for exploration, including new energy-saving features and even a comparison and analysis of traditional chlorine versus a salt water option. We’re in the process of finishing the specifications, and then we will use those to bid out the job to many local and regional companies. The second big initiative for the pool committee this year is the possibility of dramatically expanding the pool hours for adults and supervised children. This would require modifications, including installing a security and access control system. The steps in this process include surveying the residents, collecting quotes, obtaining approval from the board, and generally hammering out all the details. So far, the model is loosely following the current policy at Legend Oaks I. Residents certainly don’t need to wait for the survey to voice an opinion. Legendary Timesfive Handmade Holiday Gift ideas

By Melanie Dragger

Nothing says you care like a hand-crafted gift. Warm the hearts of your family and friends this holiday season with one of these simple handmade gifts.

1. baked breadPull out your banana nut, zucchini, and pumpkin bread

recipes and bake your holiday gifts. Include a bread pan and the recipe with the bread. Punch a hole in the recipe card and tie it with a ribbon to the wrapped bread.

2. Dried HerbsDry your favorite herbs, such as oregano, thyme,

rosemary, and sage. Once dried, transfer the herbs to small, air-tight containers, such as small canning jars or individual spice containers. Add a label and date. Herbs are best if used within one year.

3. Cookie MixAdd the dry ingredients for a batch of oatmeal

raisin, chocolate chip, or gingerbread cookies in a large canning jar. Tie the jar with a ribbon and attach the baking instructions, cookie cutters, and an oven mitten for a sweet holiday gift.

4. CalendarWith the New Year right around the

corner, a calendar makes a great holiday gift. Choose pictures of your family or friends from various times throughout the year. Select a generic calendar from

your local stationary shop. Scan, print, and trim the photos to the appropriate size. Attach the photos to the calendar with acid-free glue or photo corners. Personalize the calendar with dates that are important for you and the recipient.

5. Holiday OrnamentMake a one-of-a-kind holiday ornament. Create a photo

frame ornament using two pieces of heavy-duty card stock. Cut the pieces of card stock into the desired shape. Make an opening in one piece of card stock for the photo to be

displayed. Using acid-free glue, secure the pieces of card stock together, sandwiching the photo. Add a ribbon to

the top for hanging, then embellish with beads, buttons, paint, or twigs.

Merry Christmas!

Glimpses of texArts Holiday Cabaret!TexARTS enriches the lives of communities in and around Lakeway,

the Lake Travis region and greater Austin through programs which celebrate the human spirit, through song, dance and the enjoyment of the performing and visual arts. It hopes to become a center for excellence in the education, creation and performance of art.

TexARTS is putting together a special holiday presentation for Newcomers with glimpses from its original ‘TexARTS Holiday Cabaret.’ This show which can otherwise be experienced during the

holidays at its intimate ‘black box’ theatre in Lakeway, sets off the holiday season with Broadway guests, Austin performers including youngsters and is filled with special surprises .And of course, the performance for Newcomers will include a few holiday favorites!

The show will be directed by Robert Armitage, Producing Artistic Director of TexARTS. Robert started dancing at the age of five and moved to New York City at the age of nineteen. He began his career in theater as a Broadway performer and then transitioned into management.

Richard has performed on Broadway and on national tours. On Broadway, he performed in Victor Victoria, Disney’s Aida , Contact the musical, Thoroughly Modern Mille and on first national tours of Victor Victoria and Aida. Other performing credits include New York’s City Center Encore Series, Lincoln Center Theatre, Radio City Music Hall Christmas and Spring Spectacular, Disneyworld, Tokyo Disneyland and in several regional theatre productions.

Robert retired from performing in 2005 with a final performance in the feature film version of The Producers, directed by Susan Stroman and Mel Brooks. Thereafter, Robert has worked in management with many Tony Award winning directors. Assisting the show will be TexARTS company manager Juliette LeBlanc.

tackle Hunger in texas with the Souper Bowl of Caring!

What would happen if every American that celebrates the Big Football Game donated one can of food or $1 to fight hunger and poverty in their local community?

The result would be an astounding $90 million in cash and cans to help feed the hungry, provide shelter to the homeless and help our neighbors in need.

With all eyes on North Texas this year as they host the Big Game, you can join the Souper Bowl of Caring and help make this vision a reality! For more than 20 years, groups all over the country have joined forces to demonstrate the power of caring. To date, more than $71 million in cash and cans has been collected and 100% was donated in communities throughout the U.S. Every penny stays local and every collection matters!

Last year, 1,900 schools, churches, businesses and grocery stores in Texas collected more than $4.5 million for local charities that fight hunger and poverty. The need is growing and we need your help!
