a certain procedure to be able to force the compliance, including providing a specific form of notice and allowing a time period in which the resident may request a hearing which if requested, the board must hold. This can drag the process out. It is not the HOA’s fault - it is the law. What you can do to promote a quicker resolution is complain again to Real Manage if it isn’t voluntarily resolved in a timely fashion. For example, on Monday you complain that a boat is in someone’s driveway; it isn’t gone by the following Monday; please email Real Manage and let them know that it is still there. That way Real Manage can try to keep us on a tight schedule to get the matter resolved. Between the inspector’s eyes and our residents’ eyes, we should be able to get things resolved quicker than in the past.2. What are the rules for landscaping near the sidewalks?

According to Chuck Vaughan from RealManage, residents are responsible for maintaining, trimming, and cutting back bushes & trees along the neighborhood sidewalks. Trees should be pruned to maintain a height of at least 6-foot clearance along sidewalks, so adults too can enjoy a leisurely walk without getting whipped in the face with low hanging branches. Bushes and other vegetation should be maintained in order to clear the entire sidewalk.

Many issues such as these are discussed by residents on the Yahoo group, so don’t forget to sign up: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/legendoaksneighbors/.

Green Tip of the Month one bin. This method of curbside recycling is more convenient for residents because it requires no sorting of items. Besides that, it has other advantages:* Reduced collection costs because collection can be automated, and

collection routes can be serviced more efficiently;* Worker injuries may decrease because single stream means switching

from bins to cart-based collection (trucks with automated lifts);* More paper grades can be collected, including food packaging

(boxboard), junk mail, and mixed residential paper. When does Single Stream start? Single Stream service will begin October 6, 2008. New recycling carts will be delivered to all Pay-as-You-Throw (PAYT) customers over a three to four month period. Until customers receive their new recycling cart, they may use the bin for recycling following the Single Stream guidelines. What do I have to do?

For the PAYT customer, no action is required except to watch for a written notice from Solid Waste Services (SWS) providing details and dates of the service change. About a week before Single Stream starts, crews will begin delivering 90-gallon recycling carts to residences. Guidelines for what items go in the cart will be printed on the cart lid for the customer’s convenience. Other information, including a collection day calendar, will also be attached to the cart when it is delivered. Customers should place their recycling cart at the curb every other week with their garbage carts on their usual pickup day. Until customers receive their new recycling cart, they can participate in Single Stream recycling using their blue bin.How is this better than my old way of recycling? Simply put, the Single Stream method requires no sorting of recyclables on the part of our customer —it’s a method that allows residents to put all of their household recycling in to one cart and is easier and more convenient. How do I recycle in the meantime until then? Until Single Stream Recycling starts, just continue recycling as you have been using your small blue bin, following our current Recycling GuidelinesWhat if I like using the small blue bin, can I continue to use it?

You may have noticed a postcard mailing you got recently from the City of Austin. Here is information about Austin’s new recycling guidelines:

Single Stream allows customers to mix recyclable paper, plastic and glass in one bin. This method has many advantages: * Toss ALL your recycling into one cart * Recycle MORE and more types of items * Encourages MORE residents to recycle When does it start?

Beginning October 2008 and extending through the end of the year, crews will deliver blue, 90-gallon recycling carts to City of Austin Solid Waste Services residential customers. How will it work? After the new service launches, all your recyclables will go in one cart: paper, cardboard, boxboard, aluminum cans, metal cans, plastic and glass. Small blue bins will no longer be used at curbside for collection. Crews will collect recycling with automated collection trucks, and recycling collection will occur every other week. You will receive complete Single Stream Recycling instructions and a calendar showing your collection schedule with your new recycling cart. What goes in the recycling cart?Paper: (newspaper, office paper, junk mail, cereal and soft drink

boxes, corrugated cardboard)Aluminum and metal cans: food cans (labels left on OK), soda

cansGlass: Jars and bottlesRigid plastics: # 1 through # 7, including yogurt and margarine

tubsWhat cannot be recycled?Plastic bags, Styrofoam (cups, egg cartons, take-out containers).Single Stream:Frequently Asked Questions Here are some common questions we’ve been asked about the new Single Stream Recycling service. If you do not find an answer to your question, please contact the City of Austin by visiting:Why Single Stream? WWW.LIFEHACKER.COM

Lifehacker, the software and productivity guide, is a blog that covers tips and tricks for streamlining your life with computers (and sometimes without). Updated several times daily, Lifehacker points out software downloads, web sites, do-it-yourself projects, howto’s, tutorials, shortcuts and tips for going beyond the default settings and getting things done in the most clever, unexpected and efficient ways. Think of Lifehacker as self-help for power users. For those unfamiliar with blogs, it’s short for “web-log.” A weblog is a constantly-updated web site where posts are listed in reverse chronological order, so the newest stuff is always at the top of the page. Blogs are typically written in a conversational tone with a stronger focus on timeliness than accuracy. In other words, they depend on readers to correct them - but they usually have new information.

The Heart of Texas Lab Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all-volunteer organization based in Austin, Texas. Their mission is to rescue Labrador Retrievers from “kill” shelters, pounds, abandonment, and other situations, and place them in loving, caring foster and then permanent homes. HOTLR also provides healthcare to the lab if necessary. The organization is totally dependent on volunteer efforts. The adoption process is rigorous; it begins with an application, and if all goes well, is followed by a phone interview, a “meet and greet,” and then a home study. They always welcome new volunteers and there is a volunteer application at the same website. Legend Oaks’ own Doug Mitchell is a Board Member and volunteer coordinator.

HOTLR is benefiting from a fundraiser, called the Evening of Giving at Barton Creek Square Mall. On November 23rd, the mall will close and then open again to ticket holders, for an exclusive night of shopping. Mall merchants will be offering discounts, and

Customers are welcome to keep the small bin for other household uses, but once customers receive the recycling cart, Solid Waste Services will not pick-up recycling put out at the curb in the bins. We ask that if PAYT customers are going to participate in curbside recycling, that they use the new cart and adhere to the every-other-week pickup schedule. If customers want to retire their old blue bin, they may leave it (empty) at the curb on their recycling pickup day. SWS will be recycling the old bins. Will my recycling pickup schedule change? Yes. Instead of your recycling being collected every week on your scheduled garbage pickup day, recycling will be collected every other week on your scheduled day. What items go in the cart? The new service will allow you to recycle more types of items:1. Paper:

NewspaperOffice paper (plain or color paper, envelopes, stationery, sticky notes)Junk mail (inserts, magazines, catalogs, ad circulars, etc)Boxboard (food box packaging like cereal boxes- flatten to conserve space)Corrugated cardboard (flatten to conserve space)

2. Aluminum:

Food cans (labels OK)Soda cans

3. Rigid Plastics:Jugs and bottles with recycle symbol # 1-7 (check bottom)Round tubs such as yogurt and butter tubs with symbol 1 through 7Small plastic food packaging such as fruit cups and baby food containers

4. Glass:Bottles or jars, any color glass (rinsed and dry)

What items cannot go in the cart? Why not? We cannot take disposable plastic bags, ovenable meat trays, or Styrofoam- in any form (take out containers, egg cartons, packaging). or broken glass. Why not? The recycling processing facility uses an automated system to sort and bale the recyclables. Plastic bags, for instance, will jam the automated machinery. Residents can take their plastic bags to some grocery stores, and place in their containers for recycling. You are encouraged to ask for paper bags during shopping or opt for the cloth/mesh reusable bags. We cannot take plastic disposable meat trays, pizza boxes, or Styrofoam (in any form- takeout containers, egg cartons, packing materials) because of contamination.Do I need to clean items before putting them in the cart? Your recyclables should be rinsed of food residue. All paper put into the cart must be dry.

How big is the recycling cart? Your new cart will be the 90-gallon size cart. What if all my recycling doesn’t fit in the cart? For those instances where customers generate extra recycling they can place their recyclables in a reusable container or cardboard box and place next to their recycling cart. One tip is to crush recyclables like cans, plastic jugs and bottles. Be sure to “break down” or flatten boxboard and corrugated cardboard so that it fits more easily into the cart. What do the numbered triangle symbols on plastics mean? (For even more de ta i l than th is , see : h t tp : / /www.americanplasticscouncil.org/benefits/about_plastics/resin_codes/resin.html)#1 - Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) or (PET): soft drink and water

bottles, beer bottles, mouthwash bottles, peanut butter and salad dressing containers, ovenable film, and ovenable pre-prepared food trays. It can be recycled into polar fleece clothing, fiber, tote bags, bottles, clothing, furniture, and carpet.

#2 - High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): milk jugs, water and juice containers, liquid detergent bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, and cereal box liners. It can be recycled into liquid laundry detergent containers, drainage pipe, oil bottles, recycling bins, benches, pens, doghouses, vitamin bottles, floor tile, picnic tables,

lumber, mailbox posts, fencing.#3 - Vinyl (Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC): clear food packaging,

shampoo bottles, medical tubing, wire and cable insulation.#4 - Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): bread bags, squeezable

bottles (e.g. honey, mustard).#5 - Polypropylene (PP): ketchup bottles, yogurt containers and

margarine tubs, medicine bottles.#6 - Polystyrene (PS): compact disc jackets, aspirin bottles, cups,

plates.#7 - Other: Use of this code indicates that the package in question is

made with a resin other than the six listed above, or is made of more than one resin used in combination. Plastics such as three and five gallon reusable water bottles, some citrus juice and ketchup bottles, clear baby food containers.

Who do I call if my house gets missed? You should call Solid Waste Services at 974-1945 with questions regarding your service.Who can I contact if I have more questions about Single Stream? Movie Review - Mamma Mia!By Legend Oaks Resident Janet Rourke

The scenery on the Greek island where the movie is set features clear, blue ocean and mountainous, Mediterranean terrain. I’ve definitely added a trip to Greece to my vacation list.

The songs are delightful. You want to stand up and sing and dance along with the cast! Donna, Tonya, and Rosie were in a band together back in the 60s called Donna and the Dynamos. When the 3 women dress up in their former band outfits and sing at Sophie’s bachelorette party, it brings back many psychedelic memories of the 60s. Seeing Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sing is worth the price of admission. On second viewing, Pierce Brosnan actually sounded a lot better than he did the first time around.

I would highly recommend Mamma Mia! to anyone who likes leaving a movie with a big smile on their face and a bunch of ABBA songs in their head.

Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski

Run Time: 1 hr. 48 min.I totally enjoy Mamma Mia! - twice. I love musicals and love

stories, and this movie is both. I tend to be very frugal. For me to pay $7 to see a movie twice gives you some idea how much I enjoyed it.

The story is sweet - Donna’s daughter, Sophie, is getting married and family and friends are gathering on the Greek island where Donna runs a small hotel. Donna has always told Sophie that she doesn’t know who her father is. Sophie finds Donna’s diary and learns that her mother had brief flings with 3 men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard) around the time of her conception. Sophie wants her father to give her away, so she tracks these men down and, without telling her mother, invites them to the wedding, certain that she will know her father as soon as she sees him. Donna’s two best friends arrive for the wedding – Tonya (Christine Baranski) a wealthy multi-divorcee and Rosie (Julie Walters) a still single cookbook author. When mother Donna discovers her 3 former lovers are at her hotel, chaos ensues as Sophie tries to discover which one is her father, Donna deals with her feelings for them, and Tonya and Rosie try to hold everything together so the wedding will go smoothly.

other festivities will include musical entertainment, silent auction, local restaurant sampling, cash bar, and prizes. In addition to HOTLR, over 40 other charities will be participating. Tickets are only $10 and if purchased before the event from HOTLR and other charitable organizations, $7.00 will be donated to the local charity and $3.00 to Simon Youth Foundation (SYF). Tickets sold at the door yield $5.00 to HOTLR and $5.00 to SYF.

This event is a fundraiser for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. It’s a very family-friendly event that takes place in the evening at the Dell Children’s Hospital. It is not a race, nor is there an entry fee, so participation is fairly low-pressure, but of course the point is to raise money so they do hope that participants collect donations for the cause. All walkers carry illuminated balloons and the sight of all those people walking together in support of a cure is amazing. There’s a band, a kids area, face-painting etc so it really makes a fun evening out, in addition to a worthy cause.

The 2008 walk is on October 18th. There may be a Legend Oaks Walk team. If you are interested in

participating, contact Karen Scott at [email protected].

Oaks Yahoo Group!by neighbors, for neighbors

Don’t miss out on what’s going on in your neighborhood – sign up today!

This group is a great way to communicate with your neighbors about local happenings, lost & found items, yard sales, suspicious activity, discuss administrative issues and things to buy, sell, share, and trade. However, if you have a complaint or a suggestion for the board or management, the Yahoo Group will not substitute for official notification. You can use the group to gauge interest and garner support for your suggestion, but formal notification will still have to be made to the board and/or to RealManage. The upcoming HOA meeting is also a great place to bring up issues like this.Learn more at:
