LEGENDARY

Nahanni National Park is one of Canada’s largestand most magnificent nature reserves.Accessible only by air, it borders on a portion ofthe Mackenzie Mountain Range. The SouthNahanni River (Naha Dehé) flows through thedeep canyons, past sulphur hotsprings andalpine tundra, and a 30-metre-high mound offragile carbonate layers of tufa (limestone) atRabbitkettle. At Virginia Falls—twice the heightof Niagara—the river plunges down in athunderous drop. Planes land on the shores, allowing visitors to step into the scenery whileriver trippers portage around. The eyes feast onthe deep turquoise of Glacier Lake and thetowering peaks comprising Cirque of theUnclimbables. Abundant wildlife—including Dall’ssheep—wander the plateaus and diverse terrain.

The mystique surrounding the gold rush holdsirresistible allure. Legends of haunted valleys andlost bounty live on in the folklore and in placesnamed Deadman Valley, Funeral Range andHeadless Range. A must-do stopover is theNahanni Mountain Lodge at Little Doctor Lake, nestled at the foot of the Mackenzie Mountainswhere they rise from the Interior Plains. Theoriginal lodge was home to pioneers Mary andGus Kraus who passed it on to Ted Grant, chiefpilot and owner of Simpson Air, to preserve andpromote their passion for this majestic land.

As a long-time resident of the area, Ted has builtinsider knowledge and special insights into histours. The infectious enthusiasm combined withthe piloting expertise of Simpson Air leaves visitorswith exhilarating memories. This is the ideal choicefor any expedition into the Nahanni wilderness.
