Who we are
The Law Society of Ireland is the professional, representative and educational body for its
12,000 solicitor members. It is governed by an elected Council, which is supported by a full-
time executive led by the Director General. The Law Society of Ireland also has a non-
statutory, role in providing third level pre and post-qualification education and continued
professional development training.
The Law Society Education Department carries out the educational function of the Law
Society under the leadership of T P Kennedy, Director of Education. The Department is the
sole provider of vocational education in Ireland for trainee solicitors, specifically at the pre-
qualification stage. The Department is also responsible for continuing post-qualification
education for solicitors through the provision of conferences, seminars, workshops and
certified Certificates, Diplomas and Masters Awards, all of which are managed and delivered
by Law Society Professional Training division.
Law Society Professional Training (LSPT) was established in 1991 to encourage an ethos of
lifelong learning for solicitors in Ireland. Traditionally it concentrated on delivering legal
update seminars, management and professional development skills workshops and an annual
update conference which provided updates on various areas of legal practice. With the
increased number of statutory amendments per year and the increased diversity of practice
areas, LSPT now delivers ten annual conferences and continues to deliver timely update
seminars where new legislation is enacted or amended. It has also increased its suite of
management and professional development workshops (such as legal drafting, legal research,
conflict resolution, negotiation skills, mentorship, presentation skills, and time management)

and has introduced regulatory courses both onsite via classroom learning and online via an
eLearning platform. In addition, LSPT has introduced a number of online courses in the areas
of IT, eMarketing and specialised legal practice. On an international level, LSPT designs and
delivers training in collaboration with many international partners including the Academy of
European Law (ERA) and the American Bar Association (ABA).

Welcome to Law Society Professional Training’s Legal English division. We are offering
three one-week courses this year over the summer months.
The main objectives of these legal English courses are:
to help lawyers expand their knowledge of legal English terminology
to communicate more effectively in spoken English in a legal professional context
to acquire new knowledge, competencies and skills in specified areas of legal practice
to acquire enhanced negotiation strategies and techniques leading to more effective
negotiation outcomes
to improve oral fluency
The courses are practical in nature and focus on the improvement of speaking, listening, legal
and professional skills. This is achieved by means of a series of instructive and enjoyable
activities often incorporating authentic legal documents and using role-play to recreate
realistic legal situations. Speaking and listening skills in particular are stimulated by means of
group communication activities, encouraging participants to exchange ideas and to employ
the legal language which is the central focus of study.
