Needing More Work onYour Resume - Part I

Nancy Mackevich Glazer is manager of Legal Launch LLC. The mission of Legal Launch is to giveuplifting and creative career advice to 3Ls, recent law school grads and experienced attorneys.Nancy helps her clients land gratifying employment - legal or nonlegal - in a competitive market.www.LegalLaunch.net - [email protected]

My name is Nancy Glazer. I have been helping law students and recent grads find jobs in law for 25years, although this is my first contribution to the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin's blog, Attorneys inTransition.

As I'm new around here, you might expect me to write an uplifting piece about how great your chancesare to land the job of your dreams. My clients know, "uplifting" is what I typically do best, making theirjob searches exciting, "upbeat" even.

What I'd like to do with this introductory writing is give you something of value that will actually improveyour resume and help get you an interview. My suggestions always require more work on your part.

I know you have finally crossed off the "revise resume" entry from your lengthy "to do" list. Here I am,new kid on the block, saying, "Take another look!" (I know, too, that you've revised your resume nearly100 times and that you just can't even look at it any more without getting dizzy …)

Okay. Do you have your resume in hand? Let's check to see if your resume is cutting-edge:

1. Does your resume add value or "quantify" what work you performed for a past employer orclient? A cutting-edge resume for 2011 helps a prospective employer see in real numbers how yourpast work was valued. For example, if you clerked in-house for an insurance company, your resumemight say:

"Creatively helped resolve a multi-party lawsuit."

This is a great entry. However, to add value and show a future employer how you are even morevaluable, consider changing the entry to read:

"Saved company $200,000 in legal fees by creatively resolving a complex, multi-party coveragelawsuit."

By adding more detail (provided you can remember the resulting successes you actually had), youhave now quantified the value of your work. Everyone is looking to save money; this entry now hits achord with the reader.

In addition, you have now described to a hiring attorney that you handled a specific kind of caseregarding a coverage issue and that that it was complex. These details, especially the cost savings, help a prospective employer see that you are the one he wants to hire.

2. On your resume, did you indicate that you observed trials or depositions? If the answer to thisquestion is "yes," know this: the attorneys reading your resume or sitting on the other side of the deskfrom you don't really care that you watched courtroom action. While seeing trials and depositions mayhave been quite exciting for you, if you worked for a judge or for litigators, this experience is simplyassumed.

If you are fighting for room in every line of your resume, this is where to cut in this section. If you mustinclude the phrase about your talents "observing" in any part of your resume, try to bury it, perhaps inthe middle of the section or at the end.

If these strategies were helpful to you, watch for Part II of this blog next week. That entry will discusshow you describe your experience writing motions and briefs in your resume.

Illinois Paralegal AssociationRAIN

BY: Caren Mansfield, amember of the IllinoisParalegal Association

Rain. Sometimes I thinkI am like a cat. I hate rain. But living in the country Iwelcome rain and love itbecause my well will stayfull, the crops will grow andthe wild animals and birdswill survive. But I won’t beout in it. Rain makes mewant to curl up in bed andpull the covers over myhead. Rain makes me feela little dreary. This time ofyear the cold makes mefeel the same way. While Ireally enjoy the seasonshere in Illinois, I really likehaving no reason to go outin the cold. I hate havingto put on the hat, coat, gloves, scarf, boots andanything else to keepwarm.

Now you are thinkingokay whiner, what’s yourpoint you rain wimp.Thinking about how I feltabout rain and cold weath-er lead to a little Internetresearch. Guess what?Rain does affect other peo-ple the same way. Howdoes it affect paralegals?Like it affects everyoneelse. Here’s what I foundfrom various web sites.

Weather can make youfeel more pain, be a littleless smart and affect yourpet. Biometeorology is thestudy of interactionsbetween atmospheric pres-sure and living organisms.Biometeorology alsoincludes the study of modi-fication of the atmosphereby pollution, deforestation, desertification and otherchanges. We know that asvegetation is replaced bybuildings and structureswhich hold heat, the heatin urban areas rises. Ordrought may be increasedby the lack of vegetation tohold rainfall.

When you watch thenews at night you are giveninformation on the pollencount and mold levels. Inhot weather your newsteam will give instructionson how to prevent over-heating, or in cold weather, how to prevent hypother-mia. Be sure to dressappropriately for theweather to prevent eitherof the foregoing.

Changes in weathercause individuals to reactdifferently. It depends onour sex, age, state of healthand where we live. Theyoung, old and chronicallyill are affected more.Women are more sensitivethan men to changes in theweather. Did you have arelative who could predictthe weather by the pain in ajoint? Arthritis and bursi-tis are affected by changes

in the weather. We are all too young to

remember when patientswith tuberculosis were sentto Arizona or similar cli-mates to recuperate. When you read classic nov-els the authors speak oftheir characters going tothe seashore for theirhealth. Climatotherapyrecommends different cli-mates for different health

concerns.A study was performed

to determine if barometricpressure affected mentalability. When the amountof barometric pressure in aroom was varied randomlyall the volunteers sufferedfrom concentration lapses.A posit is that changes inair pressure may affectblood pressure whichaffects brain activity. One

really interesting notationI read was that the changein the weather affectingpeople was written aboutby Hippocrates, the Greekphysician, around 400 B.C.[See www.anapsid.org/bio-met.html].

The changes in the cli-mate due to global warm-ing may have seriouseffects on our health. While we may experience

shorter winters we canexpect hotter summers.Hotter summers with highhumidity can cause moreheat stroke, dehydration, physical and mental stress.Hotter weather can causemore storms with theaccompanying changes inbarometric pressure.

Okay, now I don’t feelquite so wimpy. When Iam just not quite as smart

or ready to jump in bedbecause it is raining or toocold I can say.....It’s justthe weather.
