SLA Class of 2019 with SLA volunteer, Athena Dickson, second from right
Who We Are
Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation (KCMBF), in partnership with local education non-profit,
PREP-KC, founded Student Law Academy (SLA) in 2019. SLA aspires to serve as a future pipeline
to diversify Kansas City’s legal community.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide underprivileged urban high school students, who would not otherwise have
the opportunity, meaningful exposure to a career in the legal profession and broad overview of the
judicial system.
What We Do
SLA collaborates with local law firms, courts, and other legal entities to provide students a dynamic
rotational summer internship program in June 2020. SLA works within PREP-KC’s six school districts
and three charter schools to select seniors in high school as SLA interns.
Talent is equally distributed throughout society.
Opportunity is not.
- Layla Janah

and graduation, provide and eat lunch daily with the student, and complete a student evaluation at the end of
the internship. Hosts will be expected to cover the cost of all student lunches.
Q: From what school districts will these students be selected?
A: SLA will select seniors in high school from PREP-KC’s six school districts and three charter schools with
which they partner (Allen Village, Center, Independence, KCKPS, KCPS, Grandview, Guadalupe Centers, and
Hickman).
Q: How are students selected to participate in the program?
A: To be eligible for SLA, students will be expected to: 1) complete an online application, 2) interview with SLA
program coordinators, 3) express an earnest interest in the law, and 4) have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

professionally, and will be given name badges to wear.
Q: What will the typical work day look like?
A: Students will work a typical work day of 8 hours with one hour allotted for lunch and breaks during normal
business hours. No overtime from students is allowed.
Long-Term Vision
Leveraging PREP-KC’s partnership with 6 school districts and 3 charter schools that enroll over 65,000
students, including 15 urban high schools, the long-term vision for SLA is the cultivation of a Legal Pathway
that connects teachers, industry professionals, and law schools to build a curriculum to support students’
interest in the legal profession, both in and out of the classroom. The Legal Pathway will provide the
opportunity for students to gain a jump start on their futures through work on legally-related projects, guidance
and mentoring from legal professionals, access to college credit, scholarships, and much more.
Each student is paid a stipend of $1,500 to intern with different law firms and legal entities for the month of
June. Your sponsorship helps support these deserving young leaders as they learn about the legal field.

HOST GUIDE
Who We Are
Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation (KCMBF), in partnership with local education non-profit organization, PREP-KC, created Student Law Academy (SLA) in 2019. SLA aspires to serve as a future pipeline to diversify Kansas City’s legal community.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide underprivileged urban high school students, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, meaningful exposure to careers in the legal profession and a broad overview of the judicial system.
What We Do
SLA collaborates with local law firms, courts, and other legal entities to provide students a dynamic rotational summer internship program in June 2020. SLA works within PREP-KC’s six school districts and three charter schools (Allen Village, Center, Independence, KCKPS, KCPS, Grandview, Guadalupe Center, and Hickman) to select seniors in high school as SLA interns.
Program Logistics
The duration of the internship is four weeks, from June 1st - June 26th. Each student is provided transportation and is compensated through a stipend of $1,500, provided by KCMBF. The host entity is responsible for providing lunch for the student intern during their stay.
One of the easiest ways to volunteer is to host two student interns at your office. The internships are a four-day rotation and hosts are provided a list of potential activities appropriate for high school students. You can bring your students to a court hearing, deposition, mediation, or a visit with a vendor. The goal is to expose these students to the widest variety of experiences in the legal community while showing them what it is like to work in a legal environment.
Host Responsibilities
Host two student interns for a four-day period. The attached application lists the dates. Provide lunch for the student intern. Create an internship schedule and send to KCMBF staff prior to the start of the program. Internships are structured for a real-world experience and work environment (ex: solving
problems, working as part of a team, etc.). Students are treated as young employees and maintain professional etiquette and
expectations (ex: dressing and speaking professionally, being on time, and being prepared to work).
Supervisor must be available for the duration of the internship to provide guidance, oversight, constructive feedback, and structure workflow.
Students learn a broad understanding of the organization and careers available in the field (ex: interact with workers throughout the organization’s hierarchy or across departments).
Students are provided an opportunity to reflect and synthesize their experience in a positive and enriching environment.
Tasks for students must be carefully planned and include opportunities for embedded evaluation.
Supervisor will receive a list of suggested activities and will be added to an SLA online community to share internship ideas and field trip opportunities.
Attendance Protocol
SLA internships will be hosted during daytime business hours, Tuesday through Friday. Students are expected to work 8 hours, with one hour allotted for lunch and/or breaks. Overtime is not allowed. Students are expected to arrive on time and communicate with their supervisor by email or phone in the event of an emergency.
Students are expected to attend 18 of the 20 internship dates to meet the 90% attendance requirement. In the event of an absence due to illness, student must notify their supervisor and KCMBF staff by email and/or phone call by 8am on the day they expect to be absent. If no contact is made by the intern, it will be deemed an unexcused absence.
To host two student interns, please fill out the attached application.
If you have any questions, please contact Sharra Wagner, Foundation Director, at (816) 474-4322 or [email protected].
HOST RESOURCES
All student interns receive training on Confidentiality and Rules of Professional Conduct and sign a confidentiality agreement.
List of potential activities appropriate for high school students:
Attend a court hearing Attend a deposition and take notes Set up a meeting with a mediator Attend a mediation Visit a vendor Listen in on a conference call and take
notes Review records in a case Assign filing responsibilities Shadow a paralegal Shadow an office manager
Work closely with supervising attorney Tour a law library Tour an online law library Assign a legal research task Set up a meeting with a judge Set up a meeting with a law clerk Research the anatomy of a trial, then
