13th Amendment• Officially makes slavery illegal in the United States• Southern states were required to ratify this
amendment before they would be allowed back into the US

• South’s devastated economy• Sharecropping– Agreement between landlord (owner of land) and
poor farmer (usually African American freedman) to farm for a fee ($, crops, work, etc)
– “Freedom’s Choices” sheet– ‘bought owner’s tools’; went into debt right away
and couldn’t get out of it!
