CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bars:

The CTS®/TITAN IBO® (Injection Bore) Hollow Bars were devised in Germany by Mr. Ernst Friedrich Ischebeck in 1983 and introduced into North America by Con-Tech Systems Ltd. Ischebeck Titan’s ground engineering solutions provide engineers in the construction and civil engineering industries with a new dimension in structural and geotechnical reinforcement, retention and stabilization techniques.

The CTS®/TITAN IBO® ground engineering solutions utilize a hollow steel bar which has a continuous thread running along its external surface. A suitable drill bit is fitted to the end of the bar to penetrate the structure or material requiring stabilization and a drill rig is used to install the bar into the desired position. Grout is injected through the hollow bar and ejected from apertures in the drill bit during the drilling. Pressure then forces the grout back along the outside of the bar to form a strong, monolithic stabilizing structure while improving the surrounding ground.

CTS®/TITAN IBO® ground engineering techniques provide solutions for anchor, soil nail, pile, rock bolt or ground improvement applications, with a wide variety of bar sizes, drill bits and accessories available to suit every requirement and condition.

The versatility of the CTS®/TITAN IBO® solution is evident in the number and variety of projects on which it has been used, often providing a more economical, efficient and effective alternative to traditional drilling and engineering methods.Expert technical advice on product selection and scheme design is always available from Con-Tech System’s qualified engineers.

Applications:CTS® / TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar

• Soil Nails

• Micropiles

• Anchors

Soil Nailing is a method of earth reinforcement. It is a very economical process which allows a controlled im-provement of the natural stability of the soil. CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar Soil Nails provide fric-tion, shear and tension strength in loose materials, combining all into a new monolithic structure.

A micropile is a small-diameter, drilled and grouted non-displacement pile in which most of the applied load is resisted by the steel reinforcement. A micropile can work in either tension or compression applications. CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar Micropiles are a sim-ple, one step solution since the drilling element is also the grout conduit and the steel reinforcement element of the pile. The micropile is usually connected to the structure via a pile cap and is perfect for structural re-pairs and underpinning.

An Anchor is a steel element that is grouted into the ground and is stressed against a structure to resist movement. The CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar An-chors can be fitted with special bond breaker material to enable the load transfer to the bond length.

Installation:

CTS® / TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar

The CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar solution uses the hollow threaded bar as a conduit for either air, water, or grout flushing medi-ums. The medium used is dependent on the ground conditions encountered. For exam-ple: rock would normally require air or wa-ter whereas soft or collapsing ground would require grout.

Grout FlushingThen density of the grout is varied depend-ing on the ground conditions; the greater the need to support the annulus the thicker the grout required. Typically a W/C ratio of between 0.7 and 0.4 would be used.

The flushing head transmits the rotary and percussive forces from the drilling machine to the drill bit, while allowing continuous pumping of the flushing medium through the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar.

The flushing medium exits the apertures of the drill bit under pressure, creating a con-tinuous pressure scouring action against the sides of the drill hole. This action exposes the harder parts of the hole while flushing and removing the softer parts to the sur-face therefore improving the surrounding ground.

When each bar has been drilled to depth it is withdrawn back up the mast and then re-drilled in a reaming action to improve cut-tings return and increase the scouring of the grout flush.

Scouring creates a very rough, irregular shaped grout body with a much greater bond and friction to the soil, providing great-er pull-out resistance and lower settlement characteristics.

TITAN THREAD

1 mm = 0.03937 in 1 m = 3.281 ft 1 kN = 0.225 kips 1 kN/mm2 = 145 ksi 1 kg/m = 0.672 lbs/ft

The CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar type denotes external diameter of bar followed by its interal diameter. For example, a TITAN 30/16 Bar has an external diameter of 30mm and an internal diameter of 16mm.

KEY FEATURES:

1. Utilization of a CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar as the reinforcing Bar. From the static point of view, a hol-low bar is superior to a solid rod of the same cross sectional area with respect to bending moment, shear resistance and surface bond/friction.

2. The CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar is manufactured from high yield micro alloy, high quality structural steel offering high notch toughness > 40J @ -20 Cel-sius. This steel is not affected by hydrogen embrittle-ment or by stress crack corrosion. It has at least the mechanical properties and chemical compositions of ASTM A-706.

3. The threads on the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar are formed much like the ribs on a reinforcing bar fab-ricated according to ASTM-A-706. The deep TITAN threads result in 2.4 times higher bond friction com-pared to standard drill steel rope-threads.

4. Continuous threads guarantee that the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar can be cut or coupled anywhere along its length. A thread pitch of 6 degrees elimi-nates the need for locking nuts at each coupling.

5. Certified to ISO 9001.

CTS® / TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar

Corrosion Protection:

The CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar ground engi-neering products can be used in permanent appli-cations if the correct installation and anchorage protection are utilized without any additional cor-rosion protection. The high yield steel has a low carbon content that exceeds the Carbon Equiva-lent Value (CEV) of ≤ 0.55% as prescribed in ASTM A706. A result of this low carbon content is that the steel is very ductile and is not susceptible to stress, corrosion cracking, or hydrogen embrittle-ment.

Also, unlike Rope Thread (R-thread), the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar thread is coarse, widely spaced and has a groove taken out of the crown. This thread type conforms to ASTM A706 and in-duces controlled cracking of the grout along the length of the bar.

To prevent corrosion from occurring, a crack width in the protective cementitious barrier must be less than 0.1 mm. Shear friction test in con-junction with crack width measurements have been carried out on the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar thread. The results have shown that the fre-quency of cracking within the grout body can be controlled to such an extent that the crack widths stay well below the permitted 0.1mm, along the anchor length including couplers. Identical tests have also been carried out using the R-thread product. However, the crack width was 0.2mm over the permitted 0.1mm, and therefore grout cannot be considered as an acceptable cementi-tious protective barrier on R Thread Bars.

If highly corrosive soil is encountered, Con-Tech Systems can provide the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hol-low Bar product with an INOX steel. This is a stainless steel that will not corrode in extremely aggressive environments.

If you are uncomfortable that your anchorage

head zone cannot be properly protected, the bars can be protected with metallic or epoxy coatings. We have also included the sacrificial loss table for the CTS®/TITAN IBO® Hollow Bar product for all of the sizes and various soil conditions on the fol-lowing page. This table is derived from the EN 14199.
