PCB is crucial not only because it allows fixing a bunch of electronics on its surface, but also because it helps LEDs maintain the cool top. In this issue, we tried exploring how PCBs are placed in the Indian lighting industry and how industry is taking on the opportunities further. Following the quest, we interacted with a couple of PCB manufacturers and a stencil making company. The respective spokespersons suggested that while the dependency is more on imported stuff, the industry is shaping up. It will take some more time to mature since the awareness level of the stakeholders is still at its infancy. The other factor is price, which is turning as bottlenecks.

Besides, we came across lighting giants to know their future plans and innovative technologies that they are soon coming up with. Orient Electric is firm that GST implementation will make unorganised players get organised, adhering to the taxation

policy and quality standards to help strengthen the lighting industry as a whole. Servotech Power is going smooth on its growth trajectory by materialising the opportunities coming its way, while Kundan Switchgear claims to have extensive experience in tool design ensuring a successful product development, especially for LED streetlights.

On applications front, the issue carries fascinating instances of LED lighting to bring forth the latest innovations, marked around the world recently. One such example is the Nhat Tan Bridge, located in Hanoi, Vietnam that has been illuminated by Philips colour kinetics. The architectural lighting, used here, illuminates the cables and the five spans, and is also responsible for cutting short the cost of maintenance and operation. Another in the list is the newly renovated Brockville Railway tunnel – Canada’s iconic landmark, which has been illuminated with 700+ Philips ColorGrazeMX4 Powercore fixtures turning the space into a spectacular walkway.

The issue also carries glimpses of new launches in domestic and international markets in the LED lighting space, etc. through various articles.

Please share your valuable feedback on what topics you would really like us to cover in our future issues.

COVER STORY

PCBs: The Thermal Doctor for LEDs

As we all know like any electronic component, LEDs are sensitive to heat, therefore, heat management remains one of the most crucial considerations that the manufacturers of LED lights keep in mind. Technically, LEDs have very low external quantum efficiency (EQE) – and are able to convert only about 5% of the power input into light. The remaining 95% of the power is converted to heat which must be quickly removed to keep the LED junction below its maximum operating temperature. Failure to keep the LED die cool will at best shorten its life, and at worse cause it to fail catastrophically.

Gradually, LEDs are getting more powerful (the latest is 75mW), forcing the manufacturers to look at new/alternate ways to address the heat dissipation challenge. The question remains static as how to deal with the high thermal demands of the LEDs which with each passing day are getting more advanced. Amidst all this, they have to ensure that the components used in the final products remain cost effective, durable, machinable and resistant to wear.

All these are to be monitored keeping in view that LEDs are too small to radiate significant amount of heat from their surface. The only way, it can escape

effectively, is through the back of the LED. In the normal process, heat is conducted from the LED chip, through the module PCB, before reaching the heatsink which releases it out to the atmosphere. This is where PCB automatically becomes an important factor when it comes to controlling or managing the heat.

Unlike the FR4 PCBs that are used in other electronics, the PCB on which the LED is to be mounted must have a high thermal conductivity, which for a visible light LED would usually be a metal-clad PCB (MCPCB). MCPCBs are manufactured from a sheet of metal (usually aluminium or copper) with the

copper circuit layer attached with a dielectric layer of thermally conductive, but electrically insulating, epoxy.

Citing this change as an opportunity, quite a few PCB manufacturers in India have recently started transforming their facility encapsulating the infrastructure specifically needed to manufacture PCBs that are a must to cater to the needs of burgeoning LED lighting industry. However, as of now, this contributes only a meagre as major chunk of PCBs for lighting industry is still imported.

We, at LED World, after speaking to a few PCB players, found out that a wave of transformation has already started wherein quite a few indigenous manufacturers are either in process of adding or have already added specific machines or tooling equipment to their existing infrastructure in order serve the industry and make the most of the opportunities. A couple of such names are Ascent Circuits Pvt. Ltd. and Fine Trak Systems. Both the companies have just augmented their infrastructure to coin on the burgeoning opportunities floored on by the country’s ever brightening LED lighting industry.

“Three years back, we really started exploring the possibilities of PCB requirements in the LED lighting industry. It took us around a year and a half reaching to a conclusion to finally enter this stream to cater to the needs of the market. In fact, the PCB requirement in the lighting industry is different than what we have been manufacturing and supplying from decades for other industries,” said Girish Vaikar, Head-Business Development, Ascent Circuits Pvt. Ltd.

“We have recently added the needed infrastructure to manufacture a 4-feet PCB for LED lighting, the absence of which was restricting us to cater to the needs of the industry. We only wanted to supply quality products as we have an established

brand carrying a legacy for so long. Unless, we invested in the LED lighting-specific machining and tooling equipment in our existing facility, we may not have been doing justice with our brand as well as with the industry,” elaborated Vaikar.

The story of Fine Trak is no different as the company has upgraded its existing facility only recently. “We have just upgraded our facility to cater to the varied needs of the country’s LED lighting industry,” stated Bhavik Gandhi, Director, Fine Trak Systems. Gandhi suggested that it needed entirely different setup because of the base material of the required PCBs. “Unlike traditional material FR4, the requirements of LED industry is metal core. Accordingly, some more machines and extra tooling equipment were needed to be installed,” he added.

Gandhi suggested that PCBs for LED lighting industry are to be manufactured according to the given specifications only. “We not only have setup infrastructure for metal core PCBs, but also got automated different departments like process line, brushing line, CNC, heat score machines - all for metal core. With all this in place, we have become self-sufficient for all the steps involved in manufacturing PCBs for lighting industry. The unit is fully operational and commercial production has started,” he said.

Ascent Circuits Pvt. Ltd.An integral part of a premier business group, with diverse commercial interests, Ascent Circuits is one of the leading manufacturers of Single side, Double Side and Multi Layer PCB’s in India. The company’s business philosophy is based on a judicious blend of innovative deployment of technology and exceptional customer service. With a distinct accent on quality, it delivers customised products without compromising on time-to-market. All thanks to the

company’s promising engineering talent pool, spearheaded by the dynamic, young management.

“We, at Ascent Circuits, understand our customers. We know that the many hours spent on the plant shop floor have to translate into tangible quality for the client. We understand what it means to partner a client and accordingly we maintain the needed operational speed in order to deliver to our clients helping remain ahead of competition. That’s what made us notched up an impressive clientele that includes companies like Crompton Greaves, Bajaj, Wipro, Surya, etc.,” asserted Vaikar adding that the real test of technology is the creation of products that plug seamlessly into customers’ critical equipment, which is the forte at Ascent Circuits.

All the products are manufactured and tested using controlled and documented procedures, guaranteeing complete traceability and batch uniformity. The company conforms to A-600D, IS-7405, JSS-52300, JSS-52301, UL-796 standards and welcomes independent audit by its customers. circuitry boards. Incorporated in the year 1989, we have an excellent track record in PCB fabrication as well as servicing. We have consistently justified our reputation under the guidance of Bhavik Gandhi for offering top quality PCBs.

“In order to deliver competitive PCBs, we perform qualitative finishing on them. The layout designing efforts put by our engineers are backed by state-of the-art surface mounting technology. We are consistently striving to reach height of excellence, and are therefore, tapping the leading advances in the industry to bring out the best PCBs that are durable and have no discontinuities in tracks,” said Gandhi.

We offer a wide assortment of electronic circuit boards such as printed circuit boards that are used in different industries to produce varied items. These PCB’s are

manufactured with acute precision by using qualitative laminates like Glass Epoxy, CEM1, CEM3, FR, FR4, XPC, Polyimide RT, Duroid PTFE and Metal Clade.

Gandhi assured that to ensure quality in our PCB’s, the company procures raw material from well established and trusted vendors across the world. “Our encompassing range of equipment includes single-sided PCB, double-sided PCB, computer PCB assembly, inverter PCB assembly, printed PCB assembly, etc. All these products are appreciated for their salient features such as: excellent surface finishing, durability, no current leakage, resistance against short circuit, rugged construction and corrosion-resistant,” he informed.

PCB for LEDs - The Thermal ManagerAccording to a recently published article by

John Cafferkey of Cambridge Nanotherm, MCPCBs based on epoxy dielectrics are useful in visible light applications but advanced LEDs especially UV degrades organic substances such as epoxy, significantly reducing the lifespan of MCPCBs used in UV applications. Keeping in view such attributes of this tiny lighting wonder, the industry experts believe that the only viable alternative is to use electronics-grade ceramics.

Of these, Aluminium Nitride (AIN) features excellent thermal conductivity (140W/mK-170W/mK), but it is also expensive. Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) is a more cost-effective alternative but doesn’t offer the thermal conductivity needed for advanced LEDs (20W/mK-30W/mK). Both are brittle and can damage easily, which means they cannot easily be screw-mounted and are not suitable for more rugged applications.

The alternative is nano-ceramic with a sputtered circuit layer that facilitates a more than adequate thermal conductivity of 150W/mK, well within the thermal range required. Using a patented electro-chemical oxidation (ECO) process, Cambridge Nanotherm used this approach to transform the surface of an Aluminium board into an incredibly thin layer of alumina (Al2O3) ceramic measuring just tens of microns thick.

This layer acts as the dielectric between the circuit above and the Aluminium below. As the layer produced by the ECO process is extraordinarily thin, heat can easily pass through, giving the substrate its exceptional thermal conductivity. Thin-film processing,

PCB Layout Preparation is A MustElectronic devices are regularly shrinking due to consumer demands for portability and light-weight products such as big-screen televisions, tablet computers, smartphones, drone devices and recently, even wearable technology like LED lighting. The shrinking of all these devices means the printed circuit boards (PCBs) integrated in their production must be fabricated on smaller footprints while providing ever-more-complex functionality and smaller components.

PCB designers are continuously challenged to meet the needs of electronic products through engineering boards with the most effective placement of components that will accommodate the required functionality while meeting the specifications of the product to contain the board. Components that are smaller in size must, therefore, be placed closer together while avoiding potential negative impact from placement issues.

The truth is that preparation plays an important role in PCB layout results. Beginning with the most important requirements can help streamline the design process by determining the constraints on the design. Sizing and placement of critical elements, including minimum and maximum tolerances, required components, electrical demands including impedance factors and power needs all combine to generate an initial set of constraints for the PCB design.

It’s also a good practice to create and save sets of like constraints and templates for subsequent designs or projects. Having time-proven templates available can streamline the design of new boards or upgrades to existing PCBs. Once constraints are set and understood, it makes the details much less error-prone, saving time and money.

Board layout techniques can include such strategies as devices embedded on inner layers of PCBs to reduce board size. This must be evaluated with manufacturers to verify that these capabilities can be met in actual fabrication.

Errors in the PCB layout design can cause multiple problems:Manufactured products that don’t perform as specified or designed

Quality or functional issues may surface due to components and circuit paths that conflict with other board elements from factors such as electromagnetic interference, current flow, track width, component size, and physical board limitations.

Boards may not be able to be manufactured exactly as specified, resulting in back-and-forth decisions between the designer and manufacturer. This extends lead time and increases cost.

Worst case – the engineer goes back to the “drawing board” to rework the design for manufacturability.

Points for PCB Designers to Produce Effective LayoutIn practice, most PCBs are designed with CAD or other PCB design tools that the technician is most familiar and comfortable with. In truth, once the design has been completed the fabricator will manufacture the board from files or documentation generated from the design tools using their own automation tools and sophisticated Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) manufacturing techniques.

The two processes may not be totally synchronized in their processing, resulting in boards that may not produce the desired results, or may not be easily manufactured, causing delays and increasing costs.

Designers are therefore incentivized to produce a design that will not only produce the desired functionality consistently, but will generate a layout that allows efficient manufacturing at the desired cost point.

Engineers need to understand the manufacturing process to some level in order to comprehend how fabrication methodology will react to their designs. Multi-layer boards and double-sided laminates or double-sided component placement designs can make the layout all the more critical in designing for manufacturing (DFM).

Placement of components may vary during manufacturing as determined by automation tools with results that are not precisely what the designer intended. In many cases, the end product is acceptable and functions properly, but failures could also be an unintended consequence. Routing of circuit paths can be altered during manufacturing that will still produce a workable PCB, but may also result in boards that are more difficult to install or repair than the original design had intended.

An effective tool available to PCB designers prior to prototype creation is DFM software. Such tools analyze the designer’s files and evaluate them for any issues or omissions related to fabrication. Combining the use of PCB design tools and DFM applications is the best solution to designing PCBs of the highest quality that will be functional and cost-effective to manufacture.

It’s also important to work with a fabricator who provides 24/7 support of all technical aspects of PCB orders, including a detailed review of submitted designs with CAM tools.

or sputtering, follows the ECO process, which directly attaches the copper circuit layer to the nano-ceramic dielectric to further improve the thermal efficiency of the stack. At no stage is organic epoxy used, so there is nothing for UV to degrade.

This whole approach helps create an MCPCB with a thermal performance that rivals Aluminium Nitride (AlN) but without any of the problems associated with poor manufacturability or brittleness.

State of Indian PCB Market for LEDsAccording to Vaikar, both the metal core and FR4 are viable for LEDs. “Technically speaking, owing to high-thermal conductivity requirements, metal core is suggested for LED lighting. But due to cost concern, people shifted to FR4. It was then that cheap Chinese manufacturers found this as an opportunity and started dumping very low-quality metal core in India, which is even cheaper than FR4. This induces industry stakeholders to switching over to the metal core,” he said.

He divulged further that those are actually of worst quality material and are produced without following even a single norm (for instance, thermal conductivity, heat dissipation, high voltage adherence, etc.) prescribed for the same. People here found it handy and imported the same in bulk for these being cheaper without concerning the harmful impact not only to the industry but also to their repute. This was the reason why players like us took so much time to jump on to the bandwagon.

“Therefore, we kept ourselves isolated from the market to do away with this dirty business tactics. It’s hampering the business, undoubtedly! But we didn’t agree to play with our repute as it took us so many years, putting so many efforts to develop the brand. We do not want to spoil our name simply by getting in to it. When we are supplying to lighting industry, it must be meeting the standards following the specifications meant for lighting products,” averred Vaikar.

Gandhi, kind of agreeing to all this, suggested that for PCBs business, delivery is the most stringent thing that everybody is stressing these days. “Most of the PCB suppliers have a lead time of up to 40-50 days, which is very long duration especially for the corporate giants as they need much faster delivery - in 10-15 days - owing to their current market requirements following the ongoing LED drive,” he said.

Elaborating on the timeline, Gandhi further added, “There is a process to be followed. First, we need to do sampling, which if passed, is followed by trail batch production, which once approved, moved on to the scheduled production. Therefore, if we get tied up with any corporate customer, we need to strictly follow these three stages. And for all this, we are now ready with the needed infrastructure.”

Each of the steps requires special monitoring & training. “PCB fabrication is simple, but a much specialised field. Developing design is very complex part of the process. Designing needs special expertise and eats a lot of time wherein we are not interested to invest, for now,” said Gandhi suggesting that there are professional sample manufacturers like PCB Power that facilitate only sampling. “Quite a few clients prefer to have the sampling done from players like them after which the process gets easier and faster than usual. Besides, this helps avoid many human errors and saves a lot of time.”

Gandhi insisted that as of now, the company doesn’t want to step in to the designing part and focus mainly on the production capabilities. “Still, we do have a small design team that develops new but simple designs based on the specifications provided by our clients. However, for critical designing, we outsource the jobs to professional designers, especially when we are overloaded with big projects,” he shared adding that 60% of the production goes to LED lighting industry, and any further increase in the share will be only from LEDs.

The Knowledge BarrierThe dearth of knowledge keeps hampering most of the industries and PCB faces the same barrier. Vaikar highlighted that the industry is lacking knowledge on this front. “Many of the stakeholders do not know what their requirements are and what norms should be followed. The need is to first create the awareness, at least, among the industry partners who bear greater responsibilities; the industry would automatically get upgraded.”

He further added, “At Ascent, whomsoever comes to us, we educate them about the difference in between the ones coming from China and those required for their products.

We educate them on why they should not opt for those PCBs. We make them believe as how those cheap quality PCBs are not going to solve their purposes. In this way, we are trying our best to communicate them the reality of what is available in the market and what should they opt for,” he said.

LEDs - The Growth DriversPCB manufacturers in India are seemingly determined and are taking long strides to capture as much pie as they can. “We have our factory in Hosur, with a capacity to produce 45,000 sqm per month for one-sided PCBs, 12,000 sqm for double-sided PCBs, and 4,000 sqm for multi-layered ones. This is pretty good capacity to feed the current market needs contrary to the fact that our order surpasses the capacity. As far as lighting industry is concerned, we have yet to study the percentage contribution from LED business in our total business, but we are sure that we have a very prominent place in the industry. When it comes to market, for now, north and west are showing greater potentials due to the accumulation of lighting industry giants in these regions,” said Vaikar.

Fine Trak’s currently installed capacity is of 10,000 sqm, while it only utilises 20-25% of it. “We are strategising to double the sales soon. To achieve this, we are targeting to rope in more customers from street lighting segment. As you know, our main focus is on LEDs. The testimonial of this fact is that whatever expansion we have done lately, all went in the addition and installation of metal core PCB-manufacturing equipment, aimed at catering to the LED lighting sector,” asserted Gandhi.

Eventually, the company expects increased share from the LED market. “We will continue meeting the needs of the regulator market by supplying a considerable chunk

to regulator manufacturers in Mumbai. Apart from that, we do serve many other electronic industries needing PCBs,” said Gandhi adding that for Fine Trak, most of the businesses is located in Mumbai, Vasai, Daman and in the north India. “For south, we are not exploring the potentials due to some limitations especially on the part of communications and delivery.”

Designing DilemmaPCB players agree that a lot of variations and developments are going around PCBs. In most of the instances, PCBs are customised products and are produced based on clients’ specifications. However, there are customers in the market, who are trading in Chinese PCBs, which they import in bulk with standard specifications. This apart there are customers, who get PCBs designed with standard specifications for tube lights i.e. 4-feet PCB with 96 LEDs. They market it to their respective clients who are greatly involved in assembling business and require PCBs in bulk.

Notably, the recent entrant in the name of advancement in PCB is ‘flexible PCBs’ to be used in LED strip. These are rapidly making inroad and is an emerging market in the LED lighting industry, especially for their applications in panel lighting. As of now, no manufacturers have these PCBs in their product portfolio for an entirely different infrastructure requirement. However, few of them are planning to add to their strength soon as these have a certain future in the projected smart cities.

Stencil - The Core of PCBsAn important process among other stages of electronics hardware manufacturing is developing stencil and the stencil printing, which is the foremost stage and requires utmost attention and consideration. When it comes to designing PCB, stencils become an integral part. To develop a particular stencil, a lot of design engineering is required as it replaces hand soldering of surface mount devices, and eliminates the inconsistencies created by hand soldering. It allows for direct placement of solder paste to the surface to be soldered. As far as stencil thickness is concerned, it is determined by the smallest component land pattern depending on the applications of the PCB.

While exploring the potential, we met Kapil Arora, Director, Stencil Point. He informed that stencils are designed in many customised sizes along with standard sizes as per client’s need using high grade raw material mainly imported stainless steel, which is procured from certified vendors. “Our stencils are widely used in engineering, LED lighting, automobile, and industrial applications,” he added showing quite a few unique samples of LED signage that his team has developed lately using latest techniques.

Stencil Printing One of the most important parts of the surface mount assembly process is the application of solder paste to the PCB. The aim of this process is to accurately deposit the correct amount onto each of the pads to be soldered. This is achieved by screen-printing the solder paste through a stencil or foil but also can be applied by jet printing. It is widely believed that this part of the process, if not controlled correctly, accounts for the majority of assembly defects.

Unlike wave soldering, reflow soldering does not inherently include the solder in the soldering process. The solder needs to be introduced to the board beforehand and then melted in the reflow oven. Solder paste can be applied manually with fine instrumentation or, more realistically, modern inkjet style printers can precisely apply solder paste to the pads.

However, for even small runs, using a solder stencil currently is the most common process. A PCB stencil provides a template that goes over the PCB and has openings only where solder paste needs to be applied. With a glob of solder paste and a squeegee, an entire board can have the solder paste applied within seconds. This also can be automated and done by machine.

The stencils can be of different types, as per the applications. The stainless stencils can be thicker (up to 16 mils) in order to place more solder paste on the pad. Minimum cut width is .002 mils, with .00025 inches positional tolerance and feature smooth side walls for better release of paste. Mylar and Kapton stencils are lower cost than stainless steel stencils and used mostly for small runs and prototypes. They have a lower cycle life and are cut with UV laser. They are typically .003 to .005 thick and supported by a stiff cast Aluminium frame.

Wafer Bumping Using Solder PasteNow day, Wafer bumping using solder paste with very fine solder powder has become into focus as more cost effective than conventional sputtered or plated methods. This additive method resolves around a stencil printing process similar to conventional SMT with the exception of extremely small pitch and desired deposit size. An optimal print process for a high aperture density design has been established. Print process variables such as squeegee type, print gap, and separation speed are tested and quantified as to their effect of deposit variability.

Solder Jet Printing Eliminates the Use of StencilsStencil-free jet printing technology has been developed to meet the demand for greater flexibility in modern electronics production, significantly improving the throughput speed. The CAD data (or Gerber data) for a particular PCB, compiled offline, is sent to the inkjet printer for instant printing.

High-speed solder paste depositing by jet printing is made possible by a unique

ejection method. The technique ejects tiny droplets of solder paste from a cartridge through an ejector mechanism onto the PCB at the positions required by the Gerber file.

The ejector system operates at speeds up to 500 droplets per second, which enables solder paste printing on the fly. The different types of solder paste used for jet printing are delivered in standard cartridges.

The cartridge is swiftly snapped into the machine in seconds, so one can switch from tin/lead to lead-free solder paste in a matter of minutes. A barcode label on the solder paste cartridge and identification chip in the cassette ensure that the wrong type of solder paste or solder paste that is past its due date is never loaded by mistake.

The electronic identification barcode label and cassette memory make machine settings automatic. Once the paste code type is entered, the printing can start. Touch-less jet printing technology applies no force to the PCB, hence no support pins are needed, further improving start-to-finish speed.

In addition, the print program automatically aligns and adjusts to the PCB board stretch based on the fiducially marks. Accurate temperature control ensures that proper viscosity of the solder paste can be maintained at all times, which in turn leads to higher levels of application accuracy. The process is completely controlled by software. The solder paste volumes can be altered on-demand.

The inkjet printing process allows control of solder paste deposits with precision, in three dimensions. It is possible to fine-tune the volume, area coverage, height, and layers of solder paste that need to be applied for every individual pad, component, and package.

Inkjet can print pads for components with pitches as small as 0.4 mm (16mil). With this level of control, small deposits can be printed next to large ones, something stencils had a hard time doing, which resulted in time-consuming hand-solder operations.

The absence of stencils means other time-reduction benefits such as no need for special paper for underside wiping, no need for stencil cleaning machines, no need for cleanup and storage of stencils, and no risk of damaging the stencils during handling.

The State of Stencil TechnologyIn surface mount assembly, the stencil is the gateway to accurate, repeatable solder paste deposition. As solder paste is printed through the stencil apertures, it forms deposits that hold the components in place and, when reflowed, secures them to the substrate. The stencil design - its composition and thickness, the size and shape of its apertures - ultimately determines the size, shape and positioning of the deposits, which are crucial to ensuring a high-yield assembly process.

Design Rules and CapabilitiesThe size and shape of stencil apertures determine the volume, uniformity and

definition of the material deposited onto substrates. Rigorous control of aperture quality therefore is critical to successful stencil design, particularly for fine and ultra-fine pitch applications where small amounts of material must be deposited with great precision.

The general rule is that, for acceptable paste release, the area ratio should be greater than 0.66 and the aspect ratio greater than 1.5. When designing apertures that adhere to these rules, it is necessary to consider each stencil manufacturing technique on its own merits. For example, it is challenging for the chemical etching process to drop below a 1.5 aspect ratio while, with laser cutting, apertures can be produced that have a 1:1 aspect ratio to the stencil thickness.

During the printing process, when the stencil separates from the substrate, competing surface tension forces dictate whether the solder paste will transfer to the pad it has been printed on or remain adhered to the stencil aperture walls.

When the pad area is greater than 66% of the aperture wall surface area, the probability of achieving efficient paste transfer is increased. As the ratio decreases below 66%, paste transfer efficiency decreases and print quality becomes erratic.

The finish of the aperture walls can have an impact at these levels. Laser-cut apertures that have been electropolished and/or electroplated during manufacture promote improved paste transfer efficiency.

The final aperture sizes. This determines the volume of solder paste that will be printed on the PCB. Three dimensions (on rectangular apertures), the length, width and the wall height of the aperture determine the volume of the solder brick printed on the board.

The height, or stencil thickness, will have a significant effect on the performance of the stencil and subsequently the product defect rate. Correct specification will minimize product defects and rework.

Whether the stencil obeys certain laws of physics that will guarantee successful transfer of solder paste from the stencil to the PCB. During printing, there exists an adhesion of the paste to the pad on the PCB and to the aperture walls of the stencil. The adhesion to the pad must be greater than the adhesion to the stencil to ensure a good transfer.

Therefore it can be deduced that the printability will depend on a ratio of the stencil wall area to the open face area. This is of course ignoring other minor influences such as wall roughness and draft angle.

Stencil dimensional accuracy and printing positional accuracy Stencil dimensional accuracy is dependent on the quality of transferred CAD data, methods and technology used to manufacture the stencil, and the conditions of use (i.e. the stencil is not being used at higher than normal temperatures). The printing positional accuracy will be determined by the alignment methods used.

industry. With accuracy as the USP, stringent quality tests are done with each product to meet the top rank, industrial standards, efficiency and quality. “We want to be continually known for our competency, reliability and expertise in the successful delivery of comprehensive manufacturing process solutions to our customers,” said Arora.

Technically, stencil printing process has to be accurate to get the PCB assembled error-free. It is believed that 85% of the PCB defects accrue due to misjudgment of variables caused during stencil printing process. Adding to the pain is the newer, smaller electronics assembly with huge differences in sizes among components. The latest generations of ultra low-profile and highly miniaturised components, such as QFN ICs, LGA power devices, and 03015 (0.3mm x 0.15mm) chip resistors are continuously posing challenge for both stencil manufacturers as well as printers.

According to Arora, Stencil Point has one of the best pools of skilled staff who constantly upgrade their skill sets so as to meet the vibrant and dynamic technological challenges in the world of electronics manufacturing. “We listen to our customers’ requirements, explore technological alternatives and provide them with tailor-made solutions. We provide easy to use, manageable and scalable solutions with continuous support and development. Technology being the key to success, we practice the use of advanced techniques and device our solutions according to the customers’ needs,” he said.

Conclusion:PCB is the base where all the components stand united and render smooth functioning to the device. Although PCB is the basis of almost all electronic circuits today, still it hasn’t got the attention it deserves. Nevertheless, technology in this area of electronics is developing quite fast. Track sizes are decreasing, the number of layers in the boards is increasing to accommodate the increased connectivity required, and the design rules are being improved to ensure that smaller SMT devices can be handled and the soldering processes used in production can be adjusted.

We observed a big communication gap between and among the industry stakeholders. They don’t want to share their strengths or achievements. Remember, PCB is the heart of any electronic device; and the way all its parts function in sync with each-other, every level/part of the PCB industry must work in tandem. Just the way one component malfunctions, the whole circuit may be affected and ultimately the device. In similar fashion, the entire PCB industry must stay together ensuring that the balance of demand and supply is maintained so that everyone in the industry flourishes.

INTERVIEW

Orient Electric – Aims to Lead Indian LED Drive

How do you see GST – a boon or a bane – for Indian economy as whole? Why?GST is a historic tax reform and a game changer for the growing Indian economy. Now we have a big common market aided by seamless and easier transfer of goods and services across the nation. GST implementation is going to benefit the manufacturing industry in the long run, as it has led to lesser tax load and lower logistics and inventory costs while allowing faster movement of goods. It will help boost India’s economic growth by streamlining domestic supply chains and improving ease of doing business, thereby giving an impetus to ‘Make in India initiative’ and establishing India’s global competitiveness.

How is it going to impact India Inc. with special reference to the country’s LED lighting industry?Estimated at approximately Rs. 5700 crores,

Orient Electric is one of the leading consumer electrical brands in India with a diverse portfolio of fans, lighting, home appliances and switchgears. The erstwhile Calcutta Electrical Manufacturing Company became a part of the CK Birla Group in 1954 and was subsequently rechristened Orient Electric. The company takes pride in its R&D capabilities, spirit of continuous innovation and commitment to manufacturing cutting-edge lifestyle electrical products that meet the needs and expectations of modern consumers.

Besides being a leading brand in fans, home appliances and switchgear, Orient Electric also claims to be the third largest manufacturer of LED lamps in India and is also one of the first few brands to receive BEE rating in LED bulbs and the only brand to have 3-Star rating in LED. It’s gamut of lighting products include LED lights, Professional Luminaries (PLUM), CFLs, FTL or GLS. The company boasts of its wide range of down lighters, floor lights, strip lights, and coloured LED bulbs - best suited for interior décor. Range of professional lighting includes LED wall lights and LED panel lights, which cater to the illumination requirements of offices and commercial buildings as emit high lumen with less power consumption.

To know more on Orient Electric’s Lighting BU, we, at LED World, got in touch with Puneet Dhawan, Senior Vice President and Business Head for Lighting Business at Orient Electric - part of the growing US $1.6 billion, CK Birla Group. He is member of senior management team of the company and actively involved in formulating and implementation various business strategies for the company. Under his leadership, Lighting Business of Orient Electric has progressively set its national footprint in a short span of time and has emerged as one of the fastest growing manufacturer and seller of LED lamps and Luminaires in India. Excerpts are here to follow:

Indian LED lighting market accounts for almost 50% of the total lighting market which sits at about Rs. 12,000 crores. GST implementation will make unorganised players to shift to organised form of doing business, while adhering to the taxation policy and quality standards. This in turn would strengthen the organised sector and the LED lighting industry as a whole. Nonetheless, it’s too early to comment much on the changing scenario and we should wait for at least a couple of more months for things to settle down. There might be initial hiccups before supply chain gets tuned to the new norms but I am confident that the market will bounce back in a few months’ time.

How has it forced to change the future course of action regarding investment and production at Orient Electric?Going forward, most of the investments will be made towards new product development,

Puneet Dhawan, Senior VP-Lighting BU, Orient Electric

quality enhancement and automation, indigenizing components and expanding production capacities. Also, we will be analyzing the transportation scenario and if required, make necessary investments in logistics and warehousing infrastructure .We will review our plan of action after some months in view of the overall impact of GST on the industry which I think will be positive.

How is the introduction of GST going to boost Make-In-India, if anyway? Please discuss.GST is going to give a huge impetus to indigenous manufacturing and exports. The replacement of various taxes with one single tax has led to creation of a single national market. Logistics will improve significantly in the face of “one country, one market, one tax” system which would greatly boost the manufacturing sector. The same will enable made-in-India products to become globally competitive.

which works on various elements but largely focuses on electronics and design of drivers and PCB for LED products. In India where voltage fluctuations and other variables factor in, it is important to develop products that meet market requirements. Orient Electric’s LED products are designed to withstand power supply variations in a much better way, which ensures maintenance-free longer product lifespan. We are constantly engaging with LED chip manufacturers so that our electronics drivers are able to provide maximum possible efficiency and assured life for the LEDs being used in the Bulbs and luminaires. In fact, many a times we have been able to convince the LED chip manufacturers to tune and design their chips in line with Indian requirements due to prevailing power conditions.

There is always the talk of new technology absorption in this industry. What according to you are the latest technological advancements in this sector that the industry can see from Orient Electric’s banner? It has always been our goal to develop innovative offerings and provide end-to-end solutions across categories and sectors. We will be soon launching LED drivers and LED tubes, various types of downlighters and panels, smart lamps, energy efficient LED street lighting, both direct and solar, along with the provision of automation.

What are the major growth drivers for Orient Electric’s LED lighting business in the country? Where do you see the brand in the next five years? The major growth drivers for our Lighting business are the LED products especially LED lamps, LED battens and LED street lighting projects. Today, we are the third largest manufacturer of LED lamps in India. We have a strong Pan India distribution network of more than 500 distributors and 30,000 retail points which enable us to serve the consumers effectively. We are focusing on increasing our market share considerably year after year with an aim to establish ourselves as a leading player in the LED lighting segment in India.

What steps, if any, has the company been taking to combat the impact on its day-to-day operations?First and foremost, we have made ourselves ready with respect to IT enablement required for the new tax structure so that we are within the compliance window and also are able to take full benefit of the new tax structure in terms of reduction in input costs. Also, we have activated resources to address the issues of our channel partners and vendors for easy transition into the new structure. We are providing regular training with interaction with tax experts so as to remove day-to-day bottlenecks.

How is Orient Electric being benefitted from ‘Make In India’ drive of the central government? Please share some instances. We have always been firm supporter of Make in India drive. We have emerged as one of the fastest growing lighting companies in the last 2-3 years. Today we are the third largest manufacturer of LED bulbs in India and the first Indian lighting brand to get BEE star rating for LED bulbs. Our strength is our in-house R&D and manufacturing which helps us to provide differentiation needed for the Indian market. We have an established competence centre which has helped us to improve our product reliability and cost efficiency while also enabling us to develop tailor-made products to meet specific requirements. I feel proud to say that today our LED bulb cost is globally competitive and we are able to compete with Chinese players in exports. Further, Government has been insisting on Make in India products for its various tenders and purchases and has thus motivated players like us to expand the existing capacities.

It’s been around two years now to the Central Government’s initiatives DELP & SNLP followed by Smart City Projects. To what extent these initiatives have paved the way for Orient Electric to materialise the opportunities?

The impetus for the burgeoning LED lighting market in India comes largely from government-backed initiatives especially EESL’s UJALA scheme and Smart Cities mission. I feel proud to share that have also supplied more than 12.5 million LED bulbs

under the government’s UJALA programme and have become a preferred supplier when it comes to B2G business. We have also ventured into the field of street lighting and consequently we have been able to bag good orders for 2017-18. We have made timely investments in R&D and production capacities to benefit from the Government’s LED drive.

As you know, customers’ requirements have changed significantly due to the arrival of LED technology. Especially in the lighting, electronics is getting more complex. How are you coming up with this transition/development in the industry?Today people do not look at lighting as a commodity, it is not just a product which emits light a wholesome package where various factors like design, aesthetics, functionality, efficiency, output and longevity are taken into account. Current trends in LED interior lighting designs include making LED lights smart which means the LED lighting solutions should be programmable so that they can work through apps and Wi-Fi for switching on/off, dimming, colour change etc. Another trend being seen is the increasing demand for LED lights housed in various shapes and sizes of luminaires. We do not see much differentiation in brand communication as of now but going forward, you will see niches evolving. Organized players in the LED segment are investing more in R&D and manufacturing to provide a diverse selection of high quality, innovative LED lighting products for the Indian consumers.

At Orient, we have an established competence centre for electronics and design of drivers and PCB for LED products, which has helped it to improve on product reliability and cost efficiency.

LEDs are known to have immense energy saving potential wherein electronics play a vital role. How is Orient Electric selecting LEDs and the electronics to ensure longevity, given the erratic power conditions in India? We have an established competence centre

Superior ColorMixing Debuts onStage and Screen

Challenge Performance arts have traditionally required lighting units that reproduce colors reliably, switch rapidly between colors and realistically depict white light. With the transition to LED lighting instruments, all of this is achieved, along with the substantial advantage of longer unit life across installations and drastically reduced power usage.

However, today’s stage lighting professionals continue to demand higher performance from these systems, including improved color mixing, depiction of richer, more saturated colors, higher flux and cooler operation in a small, compact instrument. So, when Yajiang set out to upgrade its successful Stager line of lighting equipment, the company sought LED technology capable of delivering vibrant, saturated colors with a high color gamut, as well as fully tunable whites over a wide range of color temperatures. For its high efficiency, high flux density fixtures, the company also sought LEDs that deliver the highest flux densities from a small LED form factor. Solution Yajiang evaluated the color LED options available and determined that Lumileds offered the best solution in terms of wide color options, color consistency, quality of white light and friendliness to secondary optical design. The first two products

developed in the Stager line are the Fresno Fresnel spotlight and the Eclipse Profile spotlight. The Fresno utilizes RGBLA LEDs with a single optic per LED for maximum color control. The Eclipse Profile spotlight is a LED module spotlight with RGBLA LEDs. The LUXEON C Color Line is specifically designed for flawless colour mixing. Each LED, regardless of color, has the same focal length, leading to a consistent radiation pattern from secondary optics. The LED source size is 2mm x 2mm, enabling compact design on the PCB. A low dome over the LED improves light extraction and maximizes punch in spotlights. The LUXEON C Color Line also features the industry’s lowest thermal resistance substrate (2.8 °C/W), which allows the LEDs to be driven harder or heatsink costs to be reduced. In stage lighting applications, sometimes a quiet set is needed and lighting fans must be shut off. The cooler operation enabled by the LUXEON C, together with Yajiang’s heatsink design, provide such system flexibility during performances.

Results and BenefitsThe Stager spotlights are designed to exceed user expectations for state-of-the-art stage lighting. By combining the color richness of the LUXEON C Color Line with the Stager optics, heatsink and overall sleek design,

INNOVATIVE COLOR MIxING LEDS ENABLECOMPACT, STATE-OF-THE-ART STAGE LIGHTING FIxTURES THAT DELIVER THE BEST qUALITY WHITELIGHT AND RICH, SATURATED COLORS.

lighting professionals enjoy the highest quality color mixing and white light in a compact form factor.

The Stager spotlights are an excellent example of adaptiveness in a single platform for multiple stage lighting applications. The product series can deliver consistent color, flawless color mixing and a high color gamut due to the expansive color options in the LUXEON C Color Line. The quality of white light is critical, as well, and the spotlights deliver a wide color temperature range (2700K-6500K) with CRI greater than 85 for accurate white light depiction.

INTERACTION

Servotech Power: Envisioning Green

THE COMPANY IS TARGETING REVENUE OF RS. 300 CRORE FROM ITS LED BUSINESS IN THE NExT TWO YEARS

Servotech Power Systems Pvt Ltd, started in the year 2004 by Raman Bhatia and Sarika Bhatia with supports from family and friends, made its own niche in the power back-up industry manufacturing inverters, servos, and online & offline UPS. The ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001 certified company is fully equipped to ensure its ability to supply best quality products consistently. Over the last few years, the company has grown exponentially adding strength to its infrastructure, while its products have changed the concept of power electronics once and for all.

Later, with an aim to support the eco system,

Sarika Bhatia, Director, Servotech Power

Servotech diversified to manufacturing LED lights under the brand name ‘Saara’ and solar-based lighting. After a few years, the company with its dedicated R&D team was able to revolutionise the market with high-quality LED lighting products at affordable prices. The company is soon going to be listed in NSE, and is coming up with IPO to fulfil its working capital requirements.

We, at LED World, caught up with Sarika Bhatia, Director-Marketing, Servotech Power Systems Pvt. Ltd. to know what are the driving forces for Servotech and how the company is materialising the opportunities coming its way. To which, she started that the country’s lighting industry is entering in to an exciting phase wherein the marketplace is going to get flooded with new products and innovative technologies at a rather rapid pace. “At this juncture, the diversification is inevitable but each player has to be cautious in its approach keeping in view the emerging scenario when it comes to decide on its future proposition and scope for the chosen product or technology.”

According to Bhatia, the company is currently focusing on infrastructure, government & petroleum projects. “We have recently executed quite a few government projects under SLNP wherein we have done street lighting for Alwar, Bhopal, Hubli, Belgaum, Patna, etc. All these projects are important and are of high visibility. Besides, we have also got our products installed in various government buildings in Delhi like IP Bhavan, Nirman Bhawan, UPSC Building, Yojana Bhawan, Sardar Patel Bhawan, West Block, North Block, etc. Apart from these, we do have many projects with petroleum industry,” she said adding that the versatility has made us stride for innovation.

She further suggested that acquiring and executing projects of the given scale all are not at all easy, and involved a long process of certifications and quality check-ups. “We have to deal with people from government, corporate and PSUs. Also, today’s buyers especially the educated ones are looking for products beyond the ordinary and with exclusive attributes. They

have their own specific requirements of lighting, and hence, accordingly demand changes & tweaking of products. This led us to give great credence to innovation. Today, we have a strong R&D team in place at Kundli in Haryana, which facilitated us produce more than 60% of LED products’ components in India.”

Amidst all this, Bhatia seemed very-much concerned about the awareness about LED lighting. “A huge base of our target customers is still unaware about the benefits of LEDs. Adding to it are factors like presence of Chinese products and lack of technical guidelines to standardise the norms. Other than that the receivables in government projects are too late, which actually hampers SME manufacturers like us. Further, government subsidies are causing huge issues. For instance, with lower costing there are often razor thin margins, which are not enough to put back in to organic growth of the organisations. However, the silver lining is that the government is boosting the LED business with lots of incentivised schemes,” she explained.

Bhatia expressed her anticipation to the government at the centre by simply mentioning that the efforts & encouragement from Ministry of Power and EESL, for street lighting through LED fixtures, is in the right direction. “Besides, PM’s initiative for LED bulb distribution under domestic efficient lighting is nothing, but another vital opportunity for the domestic manufacturers to make the most of it. The centre has also called for setting district level goals, and to prioritise this scheme in all towns with population above 1,00,000,” she stated adding that for all this and many more, spreading awareness so that ordinary people can be more responsive to LED technology. “At Servotech, our mantra remains ‘Produce Green To Live Green’ and our prime focus is to educate and promote only sustainable energy efficiency and drive the LED segment forward.”

On the competition side, Bhatia asserted that to combat competition at all levels, the company makes sure to provide all its customers full value for their money. “Our products have best technology at the most competitive prices. LEDs Enabling Significant Energy Saving for Outdoor Lighting

Did you know that…

India is the fourth largest country in the world in electricity consumption? And, improving efficiency of power consumption from street lighting is one very important domain because it consumes a total of 18% to 38% of the total energy bill according to the global trend*. At Osram, our leadership in high quality and high-powered LEDs can help to mitigate the challenges faced for such outdoor applications, reducing unnecessary fitting efforts, expenses and heavy maintenance cost. More importantly, our portfolio also meets the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) requirements that was set-up under the country’s Ministry of Power.

The Economic Times online media reported on 28 April 2017 that “Replacement of 21 lakh conventional street lights with LEDs has resulted in annual energy savings of 295 million units and reduction of 2.3 lakh tonnes of CO2 annually.”

Why consider LED?LED technology enables significant energy saving and also minimises maintenance efforts and costs through its long lifecycle and superior lumen maintenance performance. This is especially important in the field of street light application as the maintenance work is challenging due to difficult working environments (outdoor, climate influences, high poles, etc.)

LED lighting is also easily dimmable by utilising dimmable drivers thereby enabling dimmable street light solutions. The brightness of LED street light can be adjusted according to the time of day, traffic flow, ambient or weather conditions.

LEDS FROM OSRAM OPTO SEMICONDUCTORS DELIVER ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING SOLUTIONS FOR MANY OUTDOOR LED LIGHTING APPLICATIONS.

Unlike conventional bulbs, LED is a single point source, which makes it easy to shape its light pattern by utilising second level lenses or reflectors. Therefore, luminaires using LED provide more homogeneous and less glaring illumination.

To address the lack of electricity in India, the government is also focusing on renewable energy as another source. In this case, LED components are extremely suitable for solar-powered lighting because it can easily be integrated with the battery as it operates on Direct Current (DC).

High-efficacy can be achieved with the use of LEDs, which is a very important factor in street lighting. It also contributes to reduction of energy consumption and hence, the battery size can be reduced. This helps to lessen the overall system cost.

This is also consistent with the government of India’s initiative to ensure electricity is efficiently utilised and that is by strictly following the parameters issued by EESL. Thus, by using LEDs meeting the high requirements would help the country’s energy projects reach the highest efficiency.

What are the key challenges of outdoor application? The outdoor application field provides a number of challenges to the LED technology, which in some areas differ with requirements for indoor application.

1. Extreme ambient temperature and high humidity

Luminaires operate in an ambient temperature between -40°C to +50°C.

The temperature inside the enclosure will be even higher, and therefore, electronic components including LED need to be designed to operate at high temperature and withstand a high humidity.

2. Drastic temperature change

Temperature differences between day and night are significant and can cause expansion and contraction of materials. Any CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch of material will result in product failure.

3. Easy maintenance

Outdoor luminaires are usually serviced on-site in a difficult working environment, therefore, all parts (power supply, LED modules, etc.) should be in a modular format to be easily replaced with minimum effort. Cables should be connected through connectors.

4. Protection against water, dust and mechanical impact

Outdoor luminaires should meet IP65 (Ingress Protection) and IK08 rating (protection against mechanical impact)

Summary of key requirements:1. High Reliability and Outdoor Stability

LED must be able to operate under extreme outdoor temperature, high humidity environment and have to be corrosion and UV resistant

2. Lifetime (Lumen and Color Maintenance)

LED need to fulfill lumen and color maintenance requirements (e.g. TM-21 lifetime)

Dhabas’ Sparkle and Shimmer With the Use of LEDs

The dhabas located at the Delhi- Chandigarh highway cannot stay amiss because of their illuminated façade. The eateries may not be located in Las Vegas but definitely depict the same glamour. The buildings at the highway are loaded with strings of bulbs and lights. Dhabas are known to serve great food but the lights amplify their attraction. Therefore, the owners are known to spend thousands of rupees on tube lights and incandescent bulbs. They eventually ended up paying more than Rs40, 000 on electricity bills. However this sit-uation has been rectified by the replacement of these lights by LED lighting. The electricity bill has come to down to almost Rs15, 000.

The first eatery to introduce this change was the FOOD GARAGE owned by Manish Khanija. They replaced around 250 bulbs with Led lighting which has been lucrative for them. The business has amplified due to the change brought in by the lights. The ambience of the Restaurant is brighter and can be spotted by people from a distance. Also, people feel safe around bright lights.

Around 30 dhabas have implemented this change and replaced their old bulbs with LED lighting. The bulbs were distributed by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). The eateries at the highway received around 4,800 9-watt LED bulbs by ESSL along with 10,000 bulbs being distributed among the National highway 1 dhabas.

Further, we have complete tool room and validation equipment to test the products for it being sturdy, robust and most importantly functional. We do have CNC machine installed in our facility that eliminates the chances of size inaccuracy,” Jain says.

Delineating further on KSGPL’s engineering capabilities, he states, “Our engineering team has extensive experience in tool design in order to ensure a successful product development. When it comes to creating moulds, especially for housing of LED streetlights, we deeply study each aspect of the products to be made and then accordingly we go for transforming the concept in to a reality. While developing a design, the points to ponder are the property of LEDs, applications functionality, and then maximum utilisation of components like MCPCBs. For instance, we can see so many curved moulds for the streetlights, which eventually end up with the wastage of MCPCBs, adding further cost to the product, which is also an important

Hemant Jain, Director, Kundan Switchgears Pvt. Ltd.

consideration in making the moulds.”

Jain insists that the role of fixture for the life of finished LED lighting products is vital. According to him, heat dissipation is always significant for the success of LED in lighting applications wherein the role of fixture or in particular the housing is very important because heat dissipation for LEDs should be as quick as possible. The construction of heat sink and the alloy i.e. the raw material used to make the heat sink are essential. Further, the fixture should be made IP66 rated to withstand all the external forces like wind and water pressure. “For all these to be verified, we have complete setup of testing equipment including those for IP and endurance testing,” he asserts.

He suggests that ideally, the housing should not be powder-coated as it reduces the heat dissipation attribute of the metal. “But as you know, in India, we love to have make-up on faces to look good and attractive. Also, the MCPCB should be of copper, but due to escalating costs people first worked out aluminium as the alternative and now switched over to FR4 for the same,” he laments.

He is not worried as for all the outdoor lighting BIS is still not compulsory except for those going to government projects. “We are OEM to since last four years to a few major brands who are supplying to government projects including that of EESL,” he avers adding that if sometime in near future, BIS is made mandatory for the outdoor lighting as well, it will filter out the low quality and substandard products prevailing in the market. “It will boost our strength and demand from quality lovers. Also, it would help us enhance our share in overseas markets,” he anticipates adding that KSGPL has exported a Hungry recently but citing the scale of requirements, India is far bigger market for its products with greater future potentials. “All thanks to the government, which took such initiatives in this regard,” he signs off.

Design engineers and inventors need to come up with new a lighting technology which is energy-saving and cost effective. LED light-curing technology is the latest technology which is going to be both. This technology is going to render users with both quality and energy saving. Many medical device manufacturing industry are going for LED for various reasons. Soon, UV light-curing technology is going to be replaced by LED light-curing technology applied in medical technology assembly.

Simply, because of the reason that LED technology has energy and manufacturing advantages. Conventional lamps need higher temperatures compared to LED light curing equipment in order to get a full cure. This makes the implementation of LED light as advantageous. Cooler curing temperature are useful in obtaining better thermal management rendered possible by the use of LED curing equipment’s narrow wavelength spectrum emission. Eventually, this results in led thermal rise and is considered integral in preserving the hat sensitive substrates. Due, to less transition and fluctuations in the temperature the LED curing equipment are able to maintain stable intensity. In the end, this makes it possible for manufactures to improve process controls with uniform curing which gives reliable results. The maintenance and replacement of the bulb is tremendously reduced by the use of LED–curing equipment.

As no bulbs need to be changed the equipment offers 20,000 hours of reliable use. An example of this technology is the BlueWave QX4, which is unique in the fact that each of the four LED heads can be a different wavelength and controlled independently. This means getting four spot-cure systems in one. Its application is ideal for ideal for products that need to be bonded in multiple places using adhesives that cure at various wavelengths. This will not only save energy but also save space when the manufacturers are doing pre-production testing. The other feature which makes it better is that it uses LED wands. The LED is located in the wand which makes it feasible for efficient delivery of curing energy. LED wands deliver curing energy specifically to bond areas. Users can also add wand cable extensions whenever required in order to deliver the curing energy at further distances with specificity.

LED Technology: A New and Ideal Technology for Medical Device Assembly

Predictable arrays of plasmonic nano-particles can be generated on the surface of LEDs to improve photon emission by localised surface plasmon resonances according to the research carried out at the University of Michigan. “The idea of adding nano-particles to increase LED efficiency is not new, but previous efforts to

incorporate them have been impractical for large-scale manufacturing,” said the University. “They focused on pricey metals like silver, gold and platinum. Furthermore, there was no cost-effective way to incorporate particles below the surface.” The research carried on made the use of gallium arsenide, irradiating its surface with a focused beam of gallium ions. Self- assembling arrays of same sized Gallium particles grew along with other things and the beam angle with respect to the substrate controlled the population density and the particle size.

Different combinations of particle size and burial layer thickness were tried, with the emissive characteristics measured by photo-luminescence. “If you carefully tailor the size and spacing of nano-particles and how deeply they’re embedded, you can find a sweet spot that enhances light emissions,” said researcher Myungkoo Kang. The university stated, that similar occurrences happened before in which formation of metallic particles on semiconductors were seen generally as a nuisance during chip making when process control was not that efficient.

“We realised that those ‘mistakes’ are very similar to the particles that manufacturers have been trying so hard to incorporate into LEDs. So we figured out a way to make lemonade out of lemons,” said project leader Professor Rachel Goldman. It has been reported previously that Gallium can produce plasmon responses tunable from near infra-red to ultra-violet. The researchers at the University are adapting its technique, the gallium nitride used in lighting LED’s where it could help increase the efficiency of LED lighting by 50%.

ASABE publishes a metric standard for LED-based horticultural lighting

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), announced publication of the ANSI/ASABE S640 standard entitled “Quantities and Units of Electromagnetic Radiation for Plants (Photosynthetic Organisms).” The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers has published the first in a series of three planned standards concentrating on horticultural SSL, with the first series majorly based on definitions and descriptions of metrics. The requirement of

a standard system for LED based systems for plants has increased due to the increase in the importance of Solid State lighting in horticultural lighting.

Therefore, a standard characterization is of undue importance. The work carried on is the first in the coming three-pong effort of standards effort development by ASABE which will carry on the increase of LED-based horticultural lighting. It will provide a common language for characterizing LED based systems. The process of characterizing has been underway for a very long time. However, basic metrics such as efficacy (lm/W) that are directly applicable to humans as the lumen is based on human visual sensitivity do not find any applicability to the effectiveness of light required for plant growth and yield.

Learn New Tricks for LED Grow Lights and Save Energy

One of the largest Wholesale ornamental growers, Iwasaki Bros. Inc. has installed LED top lighting at three growing areas this year. Philips LED top lighting was installed which rendered a decrease in their energy costs as well as money saving improvements in crop growth.

Improvements such as faster rooting by 5-7 days, faster growth of roots than the tops, reduced pre-transplant and post-transplant loss were seen. Installation of an outdoor Par Sensor in one of the tricks which can help you determine what time of the year and how long you need to run the LED lights. The Par sensor helps determine how much light is being lost through shade, hanging baskets and greenhouse glazing. Operational flexibility can be made easy by the use of switches. Row of five to ten lights can be controlled at one time by turning off portions of the greenhouse while the crop expands and contracts. The customization of light required by crop can be done by having a number of lights on individual switches.

With LEDs One Can Grow Vegetables Even In Cold Weather

The onset of winters brings a gloom over food growers. Because of the extreme cold temperature it gets absolutely difficult to grow vegetables. The planters and growers start relaxing due to lack of sunshine and natural light. However, the situation can be changed and it is now feasible to grow vegetables indoors by using LED lights. Generally, people choose to go for hydroponic approach by buying containers which are soil free and attached with full spectrum grow lights. Some growers also design their own systems to facilitate the growth of the veggies during cold weather. LED lighting systems along with water reservoirs provide an environment for ideal growth of vegetables. They grow five times faster in the ideal climate created by the LED lighting system. It is also the cleanest way to grow your vegetables on countertops and benches as there is no dirt. The hydroponic kits which are available these days come in a single package. They contain pre-seeded plant pods, LED lights along with a container. You can grow your food easily by simply adding water. LED grow lights are emerging as the best selling and popular product in the market. They are energy efficient and can grow plants efficiently. They are also durable and do not need to be changed often. They are mostly changed once in 3-5 years. These days the hydro kits are made such that LED light spectrum is fit for every kind of growing conditions. Such as, red LED’S for fast growth and blue LED’s for more yield and white LED’s for growth.
