In October of 1879, Thomas Edison had a breakthrough. He carbonized a piece of sewing thread. Using this as a filament, he was able to produce a light bulb that burned for thirteen and a half hours.

Today Baleno presents an award winning light bulb with Light Emitting Diodes (LED) and a Colour Temperature Adjusted dimming function (CTA). The light colour becomes warmer along with the dimming process; the lamp lasts for over 50.000 hours.

The black curve in the diagram shows the luminous intensity of the Led light in candela (cd) for every direction. The luminous intensity indicates the power of the light in that specific direction. The shape of the curve gives a good indication of how the light is spread over the beam angle. The light intensity diagram can be visualized in a polar and circular diagram. Although they represent the same light distribution, the circular diagram gives a clearer picture of the beam angle, while the polar diagram shows more clearly how the intensity of the Led relates between all angles.

The lux diagram indicates the amount of light that is emitted by the Led light (in lumen) per square meter. The further you move your surface from the source, the lower the lumen/square meter. The lux diagram also indicates the diameter of the light beam on several distances measured from the light source.

Led Academy®

Led Technology Make-up of an Led LampLed is not new. The Light Emitting Diode (LED) has been in use for more than 30 years, for instance, in alarm clock displays. In recent years, this semiconductor technology has been further developed to create the most promising light source of the future, and it now functions as a direct replacement for conventional luminaires and lamps.

Conventional light sources heat up elements that then glow and emit light. This results in a relatively short product lifespan and represents an inefficient use of energy. To the contrary, Led lighting doesn’t heat up a glowing element; rather, it sends electrons through a semiconductor that emits photons. This technology endows an Led with a very long life span of up to 50,000 working hours (10+ years). Furthermore, almost all energy consumed goes to producing light.

Led ChipAn Led consists of a chip made of semiconducting material. The current flows easily from the anode to the cathode, but not in the reverse direction. When electrons are sent trough the semiconducting material, they can fall into a “hole” with a low state of energy. When this happens, the electron releases its energy surplus in the form of photons which produces light.

The colour of the light output is created by different wavelengths and depends on the material used for the Led chip.

There are many different types of Led chips. Baleno Led only uses high-quality Led chips from well-established brands such as CREE, Acriche and Osram. These chips have a high lumen output (over 100 Lumen/Watt) and a longer lifespan.

PCBThe printed circuit board (PCB) is used to house all the electronic driver components and Led chips. There are two types of PCBs: non-metal core and metal core. The metal core PCB is used for optimum heat transfer from Led chips to the heat sink. Non-metal core PCBs is sufficient for the electronic driver since it is not attached to a heat sink.

HeatsinkLike other lighting devices, Led performance depends upon temperature. If operated at low current and at low temperature, Leds are subject to very limited wear and tear.

Even though Leds generate considerably less heat than incandescent bulbs, the conducted heat must still be dissipated. That’s why the heat sink of an Led lamp is of vital importance to the lamps performance. A well-designed heat sink dissipates the warmth quickly and efficiently. Using low-quality materials and poor designs can result in disastrously short product life. Therefore Baleno Led luminaires are equipped with heat sinks made of high-purity aluminum or special heat-dissipating ceramics.

DriverThe Led chip runs on a low-voltage DC current. Therefore, a 230V outlet must be converted via a step-down transformer and AC-DC Led driver. This driver block is already implemented in all retrofit lamps except for Led spotlights with a GU5.3 base. Due to the size limitations of this GU5.3 base, only the AC-DC Led driver is implemented internally. It still requires an external step-down transformer.

The Led chip theoretically will last forever, but the lifespan of the Led lamp depends largely on the quality of the driver. However, the driver consists of electronic components that are subjected to wear. To guarantee a longer product life for an Led lamp, a good quality driver is therefore essential. Baleno employs strictly high-quality drivers.

APPENDIX

LensMade from PMMA material, the lens or “secondary optic,” is used to focus the light emitted by the Led chips. This makes it is possible to create a narrow beam for highly focused light, to illuminate a painting for instance, or a wider angle for general illumination.

Advantages of LedUsing Led can help save money and energy, and thereby reduce CO2 output. All existing incandescent bulbs and halogen lamps can be replaced by Leds with the same lumen output and warm light colour.

All the advantages of Led at a glance:

Energy saving By using Led, you can save up to 90% of the energy that is currently consumed by old incandescent lamps and halogen lamps, while still ensuring sufficient light output. Saving energy is good for the environment, as it reduces CO2 emissions. Additionally, saving energy also means a lower energy bill. The graph here shows how Led can save costs in comparison to incandescent lamps, halogen lamps and energy-saving bulbs.

Life spanThe life span of an Led lamp can exceed 50,000 working hours. This means that a Led lamp will last about 50 times longer than a conventional incandescent bulb. So, although, in general the purchase price of an Led lamp is higher than an incandescent lamp, over time, this reduces purchasing costs significantly! SustainableLeds are a sustainable solution because they save energy and feature an extremely long lifespan. Moreover, the Led production process is very clean. Energy saving bulbs (CFL bulbs), for instance, contain mercury (a toxic substance), which is why they have to be disposed of as chemical waste. Furthermore, a longer lifespan means less packing material and less waste.

Bright lightSome people might say that Led aren’t bright enough, that their light output is too low. Currently, Leds are being produced for small indication lamps in stereo sets, but at the same time, they are also used for street lighting. It is always important to work with the right kind of light intensity for each situation. That’s why Baleno offers a wide range of lights with a different intensity and claims that today there is an Led light solution for every existing traditional light source.

Warm atmosphereLed can emit light in all possible colours. With this feature, you can generate beautiful light effects that create a special atmosphere. Most of Baleno’s items are supplied in warm white. Warm white has a colour temperature range of 2850-3200K (degrees Kelvin), which is the same as the colour temperature of incandescent lamps and halogen lamps. This ensures a nice, warm ambience.

Instant full lightThanks to its unique technology, Leds light up at full strength immediately after flipping the switch. No more waiting for full light output, as is the case for energy saving bulbs.

Led lamps, however, have an endless number of on/off switches.This means they can also be installed in locations where frequent switching is likely to occur, e.g. in lavatories or corridors with motion sensors, without breaking down.

1) “It’s not possible to create warm light colours with Led”Led lamps use Led chips to produce light. The beauty of Led chips is that they can be manufactured to produce every colour in a rain-bow. By combining bright-white Led chips with yellow, orange or amber, warm atmospheric colours can be produced.

2) “Led lamps can’t be dimmed”In the early stages of Led technology, it was quite difficult and costly to produce lamps that could reduce light intensity smoothly. Today Baleno not only offers dimmable and non-dimmable lamps but also lamps with CTA dimming technology. This CTA dimming technology means that the light colour becomes warmer during the dimming process. In fact, the bright-white Leds become less intense, while the amber coloured ones become more apparent. The packaging clearly shows the possibilities of the lamp inside.

3) “Led lamps lose their light output long before the promised 35,000 working hours.”The lifespan of Led chips strongly reduces with exposure to heat. Though much less so than incandescent bulbs, Led chips do generate a fair amount of heat when producing light. A well designed heat sink dissipates this heat in an efficient way and prevents a decrease in light output.

Besides a thoroughly developed and carefully tested head sink, Baleno Led lamps also have a built-in Temperature Control System (TCS) which protects the critical electronic components in the lamp from overheating. The temperature of the electronic components inside Baleno lamps is continuously monitored by sensors. When the electronic components become too warm, the lamp automatically starts dimming to reach the proper temperature. This reduction in light output is so minimal it will not be noticeable to the user.Dimming the light output just slightly enables the electronics to cool down and it prevents the critical components from overheating. The lamps will return to its original light strength automatically when the temperature inside the lamps has been reduced to the accepted level.This technology ensures that Baleno can guarantee the long life span of its lamps as promised on the packaging.

4) “Led lamps are expensive”Yes, purchasing a Led lamp is quite a bit more costly than a 1.50 Euro incandescent bulb, for instance. However, the extremely low energy consumption of Led lamps means that this initial outlay is quickly recouped. Besides that, the Led lifespan is up to 50 times longer than conventional bulbs, which means lamps hardly have to replaced anymore. RetrofitAll Baleno Led retrofit lamps have the same shape and base as conventional incandescent light bulbs and halogen spotlights, and therefore fit immediately in all your fixtures and sockets.

Power Consumption [Watt]Most people are accustomed to incandescent bulbs of 25, 40 or 60 Watt. They have an implicit understanding of the light output related to these lamps based on the wattage and therefore know how to use them.

A 25 Watt bulb is used under a lampshade in the hallway for subtle illumination, a 40 Watt lamp in the fixture over the dining table, and a 60 Watt lamp might be used in the kitchen so you don’t accidentally cut your fingers while chopping vegetables. But these values refer to power consumption, not how much light is emitted.

Led lamps can produce the same light output at significantly lower energy consumption. With Led lamps the light output is indicated in lumen (see ‘Light Output’ below) and wattage in this case is then only a mere indication of the power consumption but cannot be used as a reference to the light out put itself anymore.

Light Output [Lumen]Light output is measured in Lumen. This allows direct comparisons of light quantity (which is the actual performance of the lamp). Because Led uses less energy to produce the same light output as an incandescent lamp, comparisons based on wattage are not representative anymore and can be misleading.

Power Factor The power factor of an AC (alternating current) electric power system is defined as the ratio of the real power flowing to the load, as opposed to the apparent power. The power factor (or Co-sinus φ) is a dimensionless number between 0 and 1.

To put it more simply, the power factor indicates how much power is “lost” in the driver by converting AC to DC current. When an Led device has a power factor of nearly one, almost all power is used for the Led luminaire itself to produce light. When a luminaire has a power factor of 0.5 it means the whole system uses twice as much power as the actual Led light consumes.

Although our domestic electric power meters don’t register this loss of power due to a low power factor, the energy is still consumed. Thus, even though this energy loss will not be billed to an individual household, the power factor does have an impact on our energy consumption as a society.

CRICRI stands for Colour Rendering Index. The Colour Rendering Index is a number between 0 and 100 and indicates the ability of a light source to illuminate an object so that its true colour is perfectly visible to the human eye. When a light source has a CRI of 100, like the sun in full daylight, objects can be seen in their true colours. Light sources with a low CRI, such as sodium vapor lamps on highways, reproduce the essence of colours poorly. For instance, when seen under orange sodium gas discharge lights, the colour of a car may be difficult to recognize. In general, Led lamps feature a CRI between 70 and 85. A high CRI becomes more important when the Leds are used in displays or shops to illuminate merchandise or food.

TCS – Temperature Control System technologyThe build-in Temperature Control System (TCS) technology protects critical electronic components in the lamp from overheating. The temperature of the electronic components inside Baleno lamps is continuously monitored by sensors. When the electronic components become too warm, the lamp automatically starts dimming to reach the proper temperature. Colour Temperature [Degrees Kelvin]The colour of the light is called colour temperature and conventional lamps vary between bright white and warm yellow. While incandescent bulbs always provide the same light colour (‘warm white’), Led lamps offer a wider range of colour temperatures (measured in Kelvins). These differences are useful in certain applications. For ambient light in your living room a lamp with ‘warm white’ (around 2800K) will be very suitable, but a workspace with bright light might require ‘cold white’ at more than 5000K.

CTA - Colour Temperature Adjusted Dimming technologyColour Temperature Adjusted (CTA) Dimming not only adjusts the light output strength while being dimmed, but also gradually transforms from a bright soft-tone colour temperature at the highest level, to a warm flame colour at the lowest dimming level. Light Distribution DiagramsTo get a good indication on the distribution of the light beam, we can use circular or polar light distribution diagrams.

The black curve in the diagram shows the luminous intensity of the Led light in candela (cd) for every direction. The luminous intensity indicates the power of the light in that specific direction. The shape of the curve gives a good indication of how the light is spread over the beam angle. The light intensity diagram can be visualized in a polar and circular diagram. Although they represent the same light distribution, the circular diagram gives a clearer picture of the beam angle, while the polar diagram shows more clearly how the intensity of the Led relates between all angles.

IP code IP Code stands for International Protection Rating or Ingress Pro-tection Rating. It consists of the letters ‘IP’ followed by two digits. The first digit refers to the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, including body parts like hands and fingers, and dust. The second digit gives information on protection against penetration by water. These codes provide more detailed information to the consumer about the product’s ability to resist water, for instance, than a gen-eral term like instance ‘waterproof’.

Lux diagramThe lux diagram indicates the amount of light that is emitted by the Led light (in lumen) per square meter. The further you move your surface from the source, the lower the lumen/square meter. The lux diagram also indicates the diameter of the light beam at several distances away from the light source.

RGBRGB stands for red, green and blue. These three primary colours combined together in various compositions can reproduce a wide array of colours. Baleno has several products with a ‘Rainbow’ func-tion.Over 18,000 colours can be created with Led chips.
