The proportion of artificial light from fluorescent tubes in factories, parking garages and many households is around 75%. Because they are extremely well suited for applications that require a long and uniform illumination.

However, they have many disadvantages. Conventional fluorescent lamps contain environmentally harmful substances such as mercury and different noble gases. Through these harmful content, the fluo-rescent tubes have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. In addi-tion, fluorescent light require a certain amount of time until it devel-

ops its full brightness and quickly turn hot. Other weaknesses are buzzing, fatigue and flickering. ARTEKO® LED tubes do not contain any toxic materials and require no ballast. Lumen is a unit of measure for light energy. In other words, the total light output from an electric source is expressed in lumens. The higher the Lumen rating, the brighter the light to the human eye.

Watts are used to measure power con-sumption. Often individuals confuse a „wattage“ rating with a “lumen“ rating. Lumens describe the brightness of the lamp, wattage describes the power it takes (on your utility bill) to operate that lamp.

In general, however, a higher wattage lamp will normally produce more light (more lumens) than a lower wattage lamp OF THE SAME TYPE.

Good to know - Lumen vs. Watt

Light bulb packages will standardize with new labels which will make it much easier to buy the most efficient light bulb, regardless if LED, CFL, fluorescent or halogen.

The main indicator on the light bulb package will be “Lumen” that will replace the current “Watts.” Lumen represents the amount of light emitted by a light source and is a more accurate measure of the brightness of a bulb.

So no matter what kind of bulb, simply comparing lumens will enable you to com-pare the brightness level each bulb will deliver. After you determine the lumen level you prefer, you can then look to other indicators such as the energy efficien-cy, lifetime run cost, and dim-ability to select the ideal bulb for your application.

Lighting Terms made easy!

Have you ever wondered what candelas, lumens and lux REALLY are? Well, you can research it. You can Google it. And read article after article, getting more and more confused in the process. The following explanation aims to summa-rise and simplify the magic of Lighting Terms for those light measuring tools.

Did you know: The light intensity of the sun equals about 20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 candelas!

What is Candela, Lumen and Lux? ... a very simple explanation!

One lumen = the amount of light produced by a 1 candela source

radiating out through 1 steradian (one steradian is about 1/12.57 of a sphere) - in this case 1 m² of this

sphere.

One candela = the light inten-sity from a candle (more or less).

One lux = the illumination pro-duced when there is one lumen

falling on one square metre.

Example: Let`s say a light source produces 100 lumens and illuminates the spot on the wall at 100 lux.

100 lumens and wide beam -> 100 lux

If we narrow the beam so that the il-luminated spot on the wall is reduced by 1/10, the number of lumens is still the same, 100 lumens, but now all these 100 lumens are ten times as “concentrated”, making the spot on the wall ten times brighter; 1000 lux.

Another Example: =Let`s assume this light source illuminates a 1m² spot on the wall - 1 metre away - at 10 Lux.

Then we move the light source 1 Metre further away from the wall. Now the spot on the wall is four times as big (inverse-square-law), making it 4m². So instead of concentrating the lumens, as we did before, we are SPREADING THEM OUT, giving a lux value of 10/4 = 2.5 lux!

Beam Angle

Rang ing between 0 and 360 degrees, it is the direction light is emit ted by a par tic u-lar bulb. The com mon incan des cent bulb has a beam angle close to 350 degrees because it sends light in all directions ex-cept where it plugs into the light socket.

LED´s, on the other hand, can be focused or dispersed. As the beam angle increases, the intensity of the light decreases be-cause the light is dispersing over a wider range.

On the other hand, as the beam angle decreases, the light be-comes more focused, which results in a more tightly-focused, intense beam of light.

Note: LED bulbs have the property that the luminance (lumens) is depending on the colour-temper-ature (degrees Kelvin) of the generated light. Warm-white lights with the same power are a little less bright than the day-light version.

CRI or RA (Colour Rendering Ability)

Colour rendering is the ability of a light source to produce COLOUR in objects. The colour rendering index is ranging between 0-100 and 100 is best in produc-ing vibrant colour in objects. So in essence, light with a colour rendering ability of 80 will produce more vibrant colour in the same object than a light source with a colour rendering ability of 60, etc.

Colour Temperature

Kelvin, described as a temperature or K, expresses the overall colour of a light source itself. When you describe a light as

being either ‚cool‘ or ‚warm‘ it‘s the col-our temperature that you‘re discussing. Lamps range in colour from about 2100K to 10000K. Lower colour temperatures (ex 3000K) represent ‚warmer‘ light, high-er (ex 4100K +) represent ‚cooler‘ light.

Warm-white will be used for a cosy atmos-phere in living rooms, natural-white and day-light where it comes to bright illumi-

nation and the best visibility of the illumnated area - for ex-ample in the workplace.
